Thesis Title: Asymmetric Total Synthesis of Naturally Occurring γ-
Alkylidenebutenolides and Oxaspirolactones  
Abstract: γ-Alkylidene butenolides represent a subclass of butenolides distinguished by the 
presence of an alkylidene group at the gamma position of the lactone ring. This structural feature 
imparts unique chemical properties, including enhanced reactivity and potential for further 
functionalization. The γ-alkylidene substituent can significantly influence the biological activity 
of these molecules, often enhancing their interaction with biological targets. γ-
Alkylidenebutenolide natural products such as xerulene, xerulinic acid, 
lissoclinolide,,varsicolactone A & B, pyrenolide D, and cochinolide have been isolated, featuring 
either γ-(Z)- or γ-(E)-alkylidenebutenolide cores. A new γ-alkylidene bicyclic butenolide, 
cochinolide, isolated from the root bark of Homalium cochinchinensis, demonstrated moderate 
antiviral activity against HSV-1 and -2. These compounds, noted for their antifungal, cytotoxic, 
antimalarial, antiviral, antiparasitic, estrogenic, and antibacterial properties, have garnered 
significant attention. Oxaspirolactones, including [5,5]- and [6,5]-oxaspirolactone scaffolds, are 
notable for their unique structures and biological activities. Pyrenolide D, distinct for its spiroketal 
chiral center and highly oxygenated tricyclic spiro-γ-lactone, shows significant cytotoxicity 
against HL-60 cells (IC50 4 µg mL-1). Recently, a methanolic extract of the leaves of Illicium 
lanceolactum A. C. Sm. was used to isolate the [4,4]-spirocyclic tetranorsesquiterpinoid natural 
product known as Lanceolactone A. When it comes to the periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas 
gingivalis, it has antimicrobial action. Its stunning structural characteristics and biological activity 
grabbed our attention to its entire synthesis. 
The synthesis of γ-E-alkylidenebutenolides is difficult because of the thermodynamic and 
electrical stability of γ-Z-alkylidenebutenolides. The thesis briefly describes a "visible light-
assisted" isomerization process that is proposed to efficiently yield E-γ-alkylidenebutenolides in 
high yield, overcoming previous method difficulties.The thesis contaain asymmetric total 
synthesis of pyrenolide D, lanceolactone A,cochinolide, versicolactone A & B, goniobutenolide A 
& B, melodorinols, acetylmelodorinols, hygrophorone G & F, ramariolide D and phomopsolidone 
C & D. For the synthesis of these natural products, we employed lipase-catalyzed kinetic resolution 
(EKR) and a range of asymmetric transformations. These included asymmetric propargylation, 
reduction, hydroxylation, olefination reactions, metal-catalyzed lactonizations, visible light-

induced photoisomerization, Kulinkovich reaction, and palladium-catalyzed carbonylation 
reactions.

The Poetics of Transgression: 
Translating the Poetry of Uday Prakash into English 
 
Abstract 
Translation and transgression, etymologically, convey a shared meaning: while to translate 
means to carry across, to transgress is to step across; both carry a sense of going beyond or 
transcending limits. But both are more than that: translation and transgression challenge the 
existing order; they allow a mixing of categories which leads to the creation of something new. 
Significantly, the concepts of translation and transgression are epistemically related too. In 
Western mythology, after the fall of the tower of Babel, translation becomes a necessary tool 
for human beings to come together to further their unrealised pursuit. Thus, in defying the 
divine will, translation becomes transgressive both in its nature and scope. It is true of literary 
translation as well. Translation helps literatures from across geographies come together and 
freely interact with each other, thus resisting stereotypes and blurring the boundaries that 
otherwise divide people. Interestingly, poetry, too, is transgressive in nature; it resists the idea 
of a standard language by experimenting with form, structure, and rhythm. Poetry breaks 
established patterns of thinking and social structures. Since poetry translation combines the 
transgressive elements of both poetry and translation, it can be called a double transgression. 
While the thesis primarily proposes to translate Uday Prakash’s Hindi poetry into English, it 
also intends to bring to the fore the doubly transgressive nature of poetry translation. A recipient 
of the Sahitya Akademi Award, Uday Prakash is considered a people’s poet. Raising against 
injustice, his poems are deeply rooted in the traditions of dissent. Uday Prakash’s poetry is 
transgressive all the more when it challenges the hegemonic power structures that curb the free 
spirit of life. Despite these merits, his poetry has hardly been translated into English. Therefore, 
this thesis offers to present a comprehensive and systematic translation of Uday Prakash’s 
poetry and also critically examine the elements of transgression that underlie poetry translation.
