An Appraisal of Production Sustainability of Brinjal

Brinjal is one of the most commonly grown vegetables in India. The cultivation of brinjal generally takes place round the year. This paper evaluates the production system in terms of sustainability. The incremental growth in area and production of brinjal over the last five years indicates that a major change is realized in cultivation of brinjal by harvesting more returns per unit area over per unit cost. The observed sustainability yield index (SYI) of brinjal was 0.88 and it reveals that there is an expansion in area and production of brinjal in the district. Besides, the level of technological gap was also minimized from full gap - partial gap to partial gap - no gap. The use of fertilizers and pesticides were particular environmental concerns associated with the cultivation of brinjal. Therefore, more emphasis should be given in this direction, so that these two most important (INM & 1PM) package of practices may not be ignored in future by majority of the farmers

Frontline demonstrations were conducted from 2007 to 2011 in KC Canal. Command of Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh to know the usefulness and · economic advantage of soil test based nutrient management technology in rice. Five villages were identified and 1O farmers in each of the selected villages were randomly chosen. At the beginning of the demonstrations a base \u27 line survey of selected farmers with respect to knowledge and adoption level of different nutrient management practices, rice productivity costs and productivity levels was carried out. The demonstration of nutrient management technologies covering seven nutrient management practices was .conducted in the selected farmers \u27 fields under close supervision of Krishi Vigyan Kendra for a period of five years. After five years, the impact of knowledge and adoption level of soil test based nutrient management technologies and productivity enhancement in rice were assessed. The results clearly indicate an improvement in knowledge level, adoption level among the selected farmers besides yield advantage and high net income over the existing practice of nutrient applicatio

Determinants of Public Perception on Biotechnological Innovations

Biotechnology is one of the key technologies which would resolve present burning problems like climate change. Pollution, malnutrition, drought and salinity and lead to sustainable development. Biotechnology has become a complex technology with its wide scope for generating multiple innovations across various industries. Unfortunately there are some apprehensions about biotechnological innovations like r-DNA technology, cloning technology etc. Due to lack of reliable information on biotechnological innovations and their utility in various industries, people are unable to perceive the merits and demerits of biotechnology. Hence it is necessary to address these issues for sustainable scientific governance. In India, the rate of generation and dissemination of inventions in biotechnology is fagging due to societal agitation on use of Bt. technology in food crops like brinjal, maize etc. and ethical concerns over GM animals. This study focuses on determinants of public perception and attitude towards biotechnological innovation

Comparative analysis of Use and Perceived Attributes of ICTs in Public and Private Extension Systems in India

ICT enabled extension offers new opportunities for bridging the· knowledge and extension service gap in Indian agriculture. However, several critical challenges still remain. One of the most critical issues related to use of ICTs in the extension system is perceived use of ICTs within these systems. A study was conducted to know about sources of information, use of ICTs, and the perceived attributes of ICTs in private, public and other agricultural extension organizations. While planning to integrate ICTs into the extension system, it is important to consider perceived attributes of ICTs rather than the actual attributes. The results and discussions pertain to the perceived attributes of ICTs as technology per se. On the basis of these attributes, extension organizations may consider evolving JCT enabled extension strategies

The present investigation was conducted in Jammu district of J & K state wit!· the objective to assess the knowledge level of dairy farmers about improved dairy farming practices. The data were collected from 120 respondents, belonging to R.S Pura and Marh block, through personal interview. The study revealed that a majority of the respondents were in the middle age group and majority had poor education. The respondents were mainly marginal farmers with land holding of less than 2.5 acres and a herd size of 2-4 animals. Most of the dairy farmers had low level of social participation and extension contact. However, they had medium level of mass media exposure. The study revealed that majority of the respondents (71.66%) had medium level of knowledge about improved dairy farming practices. The dairy farmers had greater knowledge about feeding practices (73.28%) and least about improved breeding practices (48.22 %). It is suggested that efforts may be made to increase the literacy rate of farmers so that they can utilize the available literature for improving their knowledge as well as skills. Mass media also need to be utilized for transfer of improved dairy farming practices to farmers for enriching their knowledg

The Power of Information: Impact of Knowledge Sharing Agri Portals in Rural India

In agriculture and rural development, a variety of fairly large-scale and mature ICT-enabled projects are providing social and economic value all along the agro-value chain by filling the information gap for the farmers. Such projects, directly linked to income-generating activities, have visible direct economic value for end-users. The large projects have impact on up to several million rural dwellers, while benefiting all actors of rural development. However, the impact assessment of these projects is still an open issue in terms of methodology and results, which leads to failure of many such ICT initiatives especially in agriculture. The present study is an effort towards assessing two such ICT initiatives in agriculture launched by the Government of Indi

Constraints and Determinants in the Adoption of Mechanisation in Rice Cultivation

In an effort to sustain rice cultivation in Kerala, there has been a major thrust on farm mechanisation by the State as well as the local self governments especially in Palakkad and Thrissur districts of Kerala. This study was taken up to identify the major constraints and determinants in the adoption of mechanisation in rice cultivation. Socio-economic constraints include small holding si-::,e, lack of unity among the farmers to adopt group mechanisation followed by the technological constraint i.e, non-availability of skilled personnel for operation. Important determinants in the adoption of rice mechanisation include availability of machines, availability of trained operators. Initiative and responsibility in upkeep of machinery and the unity of farmers. There is a need for awareness programs apart from focus on a group mechanisation strategy where individual holdings are too small to own machines
