    Body talk among transgender and gender expansive individuals

    The purpose of the present study is to explore aspects of body talk among transgender and gender expansive (TGE) individuals in relation to gender dysphoria, external triggers of gender dysphoria, body dissatisfaction, and disordered eating. Body talk refers to what people share with others about their body (Lin et al., 2021). No previous researchers have explored body talk among TGE individuals. In this study, 139 TGE individuals completed an online survey, including the Body Talk Scale (Lin et al., 2020), the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (Fairburn & Bergin, 1994), the Utrecht Gender Dysphoria Scale – Gender Spectrum (McGuire et al., 2020), the Gender Dysphoria Triggers Scale (Goldbach & Knutson, 2021, and the Body Image Scale – Gender Spectrum (Eli Coleman Institute for Sexual and Gender Health, n.d.). Correlational and multiple regression analyses were utilized. More negative fat talk and less positive body talk were found to be related to and predictive of body dissatisfaction and disordered eating among TGE individuals. Implications for practice include exploring body talk experiences with TGE clients if they are struggling with body satisfaction or disordered eating. It is recommended that future researchers explore aspects of body talk in relation to other gender minority stressors and resiliency factors among TGE individuals

    Business undergraduate students' leadership development and learning: Understanding Mexican and American alumni's experiences

    This multiple case study explored the experiences that business alumni had in competency-based leadership programs during their time as business undergraduate students in two universities, one in Mexico and the other in the United States. Methodological triangulation was addressed by collecting data from several sources and through different methods. Seven participants from Mexico and six from the United States who graduated between 2017-2021 from diverse business bachelor’s programs, and have been in leadership positions in the workplace, were interviewed. The strategies of pursuing members’ meanings, coding, and analytic memos were employed for analyzing single cases. Also, I used a model of leadership competencies development as an a posteriori theoretical framework. For cross-case analysis, I employed the strategies of coding, similarity, and analytic memos. Five findings from the Mexican data and four from the American data are discussed within their institutional contexts. Implications for research, theory, and practice are included

    Treatment of malaria in pregnancy: A literature review of current guidelines across the globe

    Introduction/Objectives: Malaria is estimated to be diagnosed in approximately 25% of pregnancies in endemic areas worldwide. In 2023, the USA had its first confirmed cases of locally acquired malaria in 20 years. With changes in climate leading to changes in tropical diseases, it is important to stay ahead of the most up-to-date treatment recommendations worldwide. The objective of this paper is to compare the most up-to-date recommendations for treatment of malaria in pregnancy in different parts of the world.Methods: A literature review was conducted from the American College of Gynecology (ACOG) guidelines, World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, Center for Disease Control (CDC), Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA), American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and Government of Malawi Ministry of Health (MMH) Guidelines for the treatment of an active malaria infection in pregnancy. Recommendations were compared and contrasted.Results: Upon review of these institutional recommendations, several discrepancies were noticed. The WHO guidelines have recently been updated and while the CDC has adapted these updates and the AAP has published an article about this, the Malawi Ministry of Health still uses outdated recommendations. The ACOG and IDSA do not have any current recommendations for the treatment of malaria in pregnancy.Conclusions: In conclusion, the WHO has completed the most recent research on treatment of malaria in pregnancy and has the most up-to-date treatment recommendations. It is important that American and Malawian medical societies consider adapting the most up to date recommendations for the treatment of malaria in pregnancy

    Cyberbullying experiences during adolescence and prosocial behaviors in emerging adulthood: Mechanisms of moral disengagement as mediators

    Cyberbullying is a pervasive societal issue experienced by 59% of U.S. adolescents. Due to the known long-term, negative consequences for both cyberbullying perpetrators (CBPs) and victims (CBVs), much research attention has been paid to this complex phenomenon. However, there are some theoretical and methodological limitations of the literature that this investigation sought to address. Drawing upon social cognitive theory and a related socio-technological framework, the primary purpose was to examine the direct and indirect effects of adolescent CBP and CBV on prosocial behaviors in emerging adulthood via the eight mechanisms of moral disengagement. A sample of 406 emerging adults (Mage = 20.46, SD = 1.89) completed an online survey assessing their levels of CBP and CBV during adolescence, and their current levels of the mechanisms of moral disengagement and prosocial behaviors in emerging adulthood. CBP was directly associated with the mechanisms of euphemistic labeling, advantageous comparison, and distortion of consequences, while CBV was directly associated with moral justification and displacement of responsibility. Both CBP and CBV had an indirect relationship with prosocial behaviors through the dehumanization mechanism. An interpretation of the findings, theoretical and practical implications, study limitations, and areas for future research are discussed

    Impact of countervailing duties on phosphate fertilizers and analysis of a cooperative grain alliance

    Countervailing duties (CVDs) are a trade policy instrument by which importing governments tax imports that are found to benefit from foreign subsidies. Thus, in effect, CVDs attempt to remedy market distortions generated by foreign subsidies by further distorting market mechanisms. On March 11, 2021, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) issued CVDs ranging between 19.97%-47.05% on Moroccan phosphate imports upon finding that Moroccan exports had been receiving unfair government subsidies. This research estimates the impacts of these duties on U.S. diammonium phosphate (DAP) and triple superphosphate (TSP) fertilizers, as well as long-run downstream prices of five U.S. row crops with the largest phosphate usage (i.e., corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton, and sorghum). Local agricultural cooperatives can form grain marketing alliances to combine the marketing activities of multiple cooperatives. CoMark Equity Alliance (CEA) was formed with the goal of enhancing the profitability of its members by providing expert grain merchandising and logistics as well as risk management and accounting services. This research uses difference-in-difference models to show that in Oklahoma hard red winter wheat basis and joining the grain alliance are unrelated. It also estimates the economic benefit of CEA membership by comparing the net returns per bushel to cooperatives in CEA with non-member cooperatives in Oklahoma

    “Camp is kind of like a sibling”: Summer staff learning experiences during emerging adulthood at a Christian summer camp

    This qualitative study focuses on the educative process of Christian summer camp experiences in relation to human becoming. Using ethnographic and arts-based methods, this research explored how summer staff in different roles experience the educative space of a Christian summer camp with varied tensions, expectations, and demands. I focused on staff meaning-making of their educative experiences as the summer unfolded and as they reflected on their employment many years later. I utilized ethnographic methods such as participant observation at camp throughout the summer, “commoning” (Ingold, 2018, p. 4) with staff, and noticing the educative messages the camp and staff community communicated. I interviewed 25 staff during the summer of 2022 as they talked about their in-process learning, six several months after the summer as they continued their camp processing in their everyday lives, and eight many years after their employment, reflecting on their experiences and camp’s effect on their “human becoming” (Ingold, 2018, p. 17) throughout emerging adulthood (Arnett, 2000). As an educative space, camp taught staff what to value and how to behave, demanding high energy staff performances despite burnout. Staff framed all of camp life through the lens of deep and meaningful spiritual work that has eternal effects, often calling on God or relying on Him to support and sustain them. They described camp as a “pressure cooker” where their spiritual, emotional, and physical growth, and their relationships were intensified. Alumni staff indicated that camp was a core experience in their own becoming during their emerging adulthood as they figured out who they were and wanted to be. This study expands research on summer camps and Christian summer camps by conceptualizing them as educative spaces, using arts-based ethnographic methods that allowed insights into camp life as it was happening, focusing on diverse staff perspectives (support and counseling staff) that sustain camp labor, and providing insights into the varied navigations emerging adults experience in camp life of rest and labor, gendered messaging, and community

    Fertility management in soilless growth media for vegetable and ornamental crop production

    Greenhouse production is growing rapidly, with a focus on sustainability and efficient resource use, particularly in potted plant cultivation using soilless growth media. The objective of this research was to assess the effects of varying rates of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) on the productivity and growth of several crops including beet, petunia, spinach, lettuce, radish, cucumber, tomato, and geranium. Treatments included 0 to 200 mg L⁻¹ of N, P, and K in spinach, lettuce, radish, and beet, while concentrations of 0 to 500 mg L⁻¹ were applied to geranium and petunia. Tomato plants received 0 to 400 mg L⁻¹ N, 0 to 200 mg L⁻¹ P, and 0 to 500 mg L⁻¹ K; while cucumber plants received 0 to 250 mg L⁻¹ N, 0 to 100 mg L⁻¹ P, and 0 to 200 mg L⁻¹ K. Growth parameters such as shoot dry weight, SPAD values, and leaf number increased with greater N and K rates. When N and K levels were equivalent to, or greater than P, beet, radish, and spinach growth increased, while lettuce had greater growth with greater P levels at 150 to 200 mg L⁻¹. Greater N and K levels were associated with increased growth and yield in cucumber and tomato tests (up to 150 mg L⁻¹ and 300 mg L⁻¹, respectively). In all crops, greater N and K rates increased leaf number, root and shoot weights, and SPAD values; however, the optimum fertilizer combinations varied depending on the species. Tomato plants had greater growth when given 200 mg L⁻¹ N, 100 mg L⁻¹ P, and 300 mg L⁻¹ K, but cucumber had greater when given 150 mg L⁻¹ N, 50 mg L⁻¹ P, and 100 mg L⁻¹ K.  Beet produced greatest yields when given fertilizer rates of 100 mg L⁻¹ N, 100 mg L⁻¹ P, and 150 mg L⁻¹ K. Radish plants grew greater when given 100 mg L⁻¹ N, 150 mg L⁻¹ P, and 100 mg L⁻¹ K. Lettuce plants had greatest yield with a fertilizer rate of 100 mg L⁻¹ N, 150 mg L⁻¹ P, and 100 mg L⁻¹ K. Spinach, showed optimal growth when given 200 mg L⁻¹ N, 100 mg L⁻¹ P, and 100 mg L⁻¹ K. For petunia plants, the ideal fertilizer rate was 200 mg L⁻¹ N, 200 mg L⁻¹ P, and 300 mg L⁻¹ K. Geranium plants performed greatest with greatest levels of 400 mg L⁻¹ N, 200 mg L⁻¹ P, and 200 mg L⁻¹ K

    Development of an operando technique to probe electrochemical strains in V₂O₅ cathodes during the cycling of aqueous Zn-ion batteries

    Concerns over the environmental effects of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions has led to an increased demand for renewable energy storage systems (RESS). Aqueous Zn-ion batteries are a promising RESS due to their high safety, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, their development is limited by a limited understanding of cathodic charge storage mechanisms. My master’s project was to develop a custom cell for probing mechanical deformations during the electrochemical cycling of aqueous batteries using operando digital image correlation (DIC). Characterizing operando mechanical deformations can elucidate charge storage mechanisms by correlating phase transformations and mechanistic changes with electrochemical behavior. Investigations were performed on cathodes utilizing a commercial V₂O₅ powder ball-milled in ethanol. Using the developed custom cell, mechanical deformations were investigated during electrochemical cycling of V₂O₅ in aqueous Zn-ion batteries. Analysis of the rates of strain and strain derivatives was performed to investigate changes in the strain behavior and the relationship between electrochemical and strain behavior

    Identifying consumer awareness of meat product labels using 3-D eye-tracking technology

    Food retailers today utilize various strategies to gain the most consumerattention. Retailers strategically label their products to gain the most customer attention. By including more information on the label, meat retailers could attract more customer interest and influence purchasing decisions. Producers use these characteristics on their labels to persuade consumers to purchase their products. This research utilized 3D eye-tracking technology, specifically the Tobii Pro Glasses 3. Data was collected and provided by the Tobii software. Participants were asked to shop in a setting containing one display case at Cowboy Meats in the Oklahoma State University Food and Agricultural Product Center. This display case contained six labels with specific characteristics, such as an OSU logo, safe handling instructions, color, and price. The eye-tracking glasses recorded participants’ eye movements, generating gaze plots and heat maps to identify which label characteristics received the most attention. A survey was also conducted to assess participants’ perceptions and willingness to pay for products with specific attributes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of labeled product characteristics on consumer perceptions and willingness to pay using 3D eye-tracking technology and determine if the appearance of a label on a meat product influences the amount of attention it receives. To identify which labels receive the most attention, gaze plots, and heat maps displayed what participants pay attention to the most. A survey was also given with meat labels and social demographic questions. The findings from this research provided valuable insight into the effectiveness of meat product labels in attracting consumer attention and driving purchasing decisions. It will help food retailers understand the importance of label characteristics in maximizing customer engagement and willingness to pay for their products
