Development of aluminum-infused thermoplastic, additive manufactured hybrid rocket fuel grains
This thesis presents the development of a method for manufacturing aluminum-infused additive manufactured hybrid rocket fuel grains using thermoplastics as a filament material. The overall motivation of this study is to retain the safe storage, handling, and transportation benefits of hybrid rockets while improving specific impulse and thrust-to-weight ratio. The addition of aluminum to thermoplastic fuel grains will aid in closing the performance gap with liquid and solid rockets, respectively. For this study, 10-micron aluminum powder was mixed with acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) pellets and run through a filament extrusion machine to make aluminum infused 3D printer filament. The filament produced was approximately 2-5% aluminum by mass and was used to print 54 mm hybrid rocket fuel grains. These grains were printed in 1-inch sections and bound together with gel cyanoacrylate adhesives. Aluminum powder is a common additive in solid rocket propellant to boost thrust and by infusing it with additive manufactured hybrid rocket fuel grains, it will close the performance gap with solid and liquid rockets. The grains produced in this thesis were tested in a hybrid rocket test stand with nitrous oxide used as an oxidizer. Baseline fuel grains of the same dimension and ABS composition that lacked any additives were also tested for comparison to analyze the effect of aluminum in the grains. Data collected from this study analyzed the elemental composition of aluminum-infused print filament in addition to thrust data from an aluminum-infused and baseline fuel grain test. The key results from this study demonstrated that producing aluminum-infused thermoplastic suitable for use in additive manufacture is possible and that aluminum-infused fuel grains ignite with no issues in a hybrid rocket test stand. The new knowledge from this study provides a framework for further testing the effects of aluminum in hybrid rocket performance and will create a path for incorporating other additives in additive manufactured fuel grains
The Deaf Experience, Deaf Expression project and how it is tied to the social determinants of health using thematic analysis
The Deaf Experience, Deaf Expression (DXDX) project is a large-scale research study that was launched to serve members of our community. Our purpose is to gather interviews documenting real-life experiences from deaf people across the lifespan. We aim to create a database for newly diagnosed individuals, parents, friends, and professionals to use as a community resource. This collection will serve as a convenient guide to support deaf people and their family members through major life decisions.In this presentation, we will focus on the thematic analysis we have been conducting to determine what factors contribute to decisions on an individual's preferred mode of hearing technology. Thematic analysis is a method that has allowed us to organize and analyze the data we have collected across interviews with different participants. Using a qualitative inquiry approach, we have identified twenty-seven different recurring themes across our participants. Themes were pinpointed based on direct quotes from our participants. Some of these themes include communication barriers, family support, acceptance, social interactions, and hearing technology experiences.Through this investigation, we recognized that the data we have collected thus far aligns with the five domains of the social determinants of health: economic stability, education access and quality, healthcare access and quality, neighborhood and built environment, and social community context. Our data set falls into each one of these domains. Exploring clinical trialists’ perspectives on core outcome sets for immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) trials: A web-based survey study
Introduction: Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) is a complex autoimmune disorder associated with a low platelet count, and elevated bleeding risk. Conducting clinical trials in ITP is vital for comprehending the disease and improving patient outcomes. However, diverse outcome measures across trials impede result comparison, necessitating the use of Core Outcome Sets (COS). COS are specific trial outcomes for uniform measurement and reporting, aiming to enhance research quality, evidence synthesis, and patient-centered outcomes. Despite potential benefits, COS adoption in the ITP clinical trial community remains inconsistent. This cross-sectional, web-based survey investigates clinical trialists' perceptions, knowledge, and usage patterns of COS in ITP research. Our objective is to obtain insight on the awareness, integration, barriers, and recommendations for ITP COS. This study's insights aim to inform strategies for enhancing COS adoption, advancing standardization in ITP trials, and optimizing therapeutic intervention evidence.Methods: Using a sample of ITP trials from a previous study, eligible participants are identified from the 'Contacts and Locations' section of ClinicalTrials.gov registry profiles. The survey, conducted via REDCap, consists of 20 questions covering demographic information, COS familiarity, and practical experiences with COS. Questions vary in format, including multiple-choice, Likert scale, and open-ended, allowing for both quantitative and qualitative data collection. Informed by the COMET Initiative's core outcome set database, the survey addresses awareness, knowledge, use, and perceptions of COS in ITP trials. Data collection occurs through an eight-week email-based process, ensuring participant anonymity and confidentiality. The analysis, combining descriptive and inferential statistics, as well as thematic analysis of qualitative data, aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of clinical trialists' perspectives on COS in ITP trials. Data analysis will include descriptive and inferential statistics, as well as qualitative data obtained from open-ended questions.Results: Data is currently in the collection phase of this study. Analysis of survey responses will include:1. Descriptive statistics: summarizing patient demographics and responses to close-ended questions.2. Inferential statistics: examples include chi-square tests and t-tests which may be used to identify relationships between variables or differences among subgroups.3. Qualitative data: derived from responses to open-ended questions, which will undergo thematic analysis to discern recurring themes and patterns.Conclusion: Upon concluding this study, our findings will provide insights into the utilization and awareness of Core Outcome Sets among clinical trialists. The knowledge acquired from this research may establish a basis for forthcoming initiatives and interventions dedicated to improving the adoption of COS within the clinical trial community. Furthermore, these outcomes have the potential to foster consistency in clinical reporting of COS, ultimately contributing to enhanced patient outcomes for ITP patients
Impact of the student teaching internship on the emotional intelligence of pre-service school-based agricultural education teachers
This study sought to explore the impact the student teaching internship has on the emotional intelligence of pre-service teachers during the Spring 2024 semester. The objectives for the study were identified as: determine the emotional intelligence level of pre-service teachers prior to their first teaching experience, determine the emotional intelligence level of pre-service teachers just after their first teaching experience, and compare the difference in emotional intelligence scores from before and after the student teaching experience. The population of interest was pre-service school-based agricultural education teachers. The instrument used was the Social-Emotional Competence Teacher Rating Scale (SECTRS) with a retrospective pretest-posttest approach. Social Awareness and Emotional Regulation were found to be the two components of Emotional Intelligence impacted the most by the student teaching internship. This study highlights the necessity of incorporating emotional intelligence training into teacher preparation programs to better prepare preservice teachers for the demands of the classroom
Thermal power budget approach to estimate the geothermal potential of closed mines
Over the past 5 years, research at the Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (INRS) in Québec City has focused on the concept of thermal power budget to evaluate the geothermal potential of abandoned and flooded mines. The objective of this paper is to describe this new resource assessment concept and show how it was applied to a variety of mine sites, both open pit and underground, at the early stage of geothermal development. This considers not only the volume of water in the mine, as well as initial and final temperatures, but also the volume of rock involved in heat exchange and water inputs, such as precipitation and groundwater. The gigantic open-pit mines in the Thetford Mines area contain geothermal resources with promising potential for cooling data centres. Studies have also been carried out in Yellowknife (Northwest Territories) to assess the amount of thermal energy that could be produced from a world-scale underground mine integrating geothermal heat pumps
Determining glucose transporters in chicken skeletal muscle
Glucose metabolism is an important part of animal homeostasis and, when dysregulated, results in significant dysfunction. Diabetes is broken down into type I and type II. Type I diabetes is characterized by the elimination of pancreatic β-cells. Pancreatic β-cells are responsible for the synthesis, storage, and release of insulin. Type II diabetes is characterized by the tissues effect becoming resistant to a high level of insulin and causing pancreatic β-cells to overwork. The overworked pancreatic β-cells start to fail which causes a loss of insulin production. For the body to have glucose homeostasis the glucose transporters must facilitate the diffusion of glucose into cells. There are two types of glucose transporters, insulin independent and insulin dependent. Insulin independent glucose transporters do not require the presence of insulin to allow glucose into cells. Insulin dependent glucose transporters require insulin to be present to accept glucose into the cell. The insulin independent glucose transporters are glucose transporter 1, 2, 3, 9, 10, and 12. The insulin dependent glucose transporters are glucose transporter 5, 8, 11, and 14. Together all these transporters keep glucose homeostasis in an organism’s body. In this research we use broiler chickens to model glucose transporters. Since chickens are a natural model of insulin resistance and rarely get diabetes. They use glucose independently of insulin. By studying their glucose transporters, we can evaluate why they use glucose independently and see if we can translate our findings to human diseases. Using rt-qPCR we measured the amounts of glucose transporters in different skeletal muscles of chickens. We found that leg muscles have an upregulation of insulin independent glucose transporters 1 and 3 and the pectoralis muscle has an upregulation of insulin dependent glucose transporters 5 and 8. These findings suggest that varied locations of skeletal muscles utilize different glucose transporters. Further, these findings can assist in determining preferred sites for specific insulin usage and delineate mechanisms for resistance to insulin in diabetes
Design of veteran healthcare waiting rooms to promote mental health and well-being of female veterans
The utilization of veteran affairs healthcare services among both male and female veterans have shown an increase, yet female veterans continue to underutilize these services. Historically, healthcare facility design has often overlooked the influence of the interior environment on patient quality. There is an opportunity to enhance patients’ well-being through evidence-based design principles. By minimizing environmental stressors, such as color, lighting, layout, and imagery, interior healthcare environments can be improved. Though previous studies have explored the health benefits of different interior design attributes, none reported specific needs and preferences of female veterans along with emotions they experienced. Thus, there is a critical need to design veteran clinics that incorporate interior attributes and to study the impact of such design on the mental health and well-being of female veterans. The purpose of this study is to better understand the needs and preferences of male and female veterans to enhance the design of a veteran healthcare waiting room. Although this study focuses on improving the mental health and well-being of female veterans, gathering data from male and female veterans may reveal the different needs, emotions experienced, and design preferences. The study was conducted in three phases: 1) a needs assessment focus group and survey, 2) the development and redesign of an existing veteran healthcare waiting room, and 3) an evaluation of users’ perceptions. Phase one consisted of participants taking a needs assessment survey, including demographic and Likert scale questions as well as an open-ended question. Phase III consisted of participants being immersed in the redesigned veteran healthcare waiting room in virtual reality, followed by a similar survey that was administered in Phase I. Content Analysis was used to analyze qualitative data for Phase I and Phase III. This study found significant differences in perceptions between male and female veterans for both the existing and redesigned veteran healthcare waiting rooms. However, there were no significant difference in feelings and emotions between male and female veterans in both waiting rooms
