    Finding our way: The entangled experiences of NPE graduate student-instructors in first-year composition

    This project identifies and considers three major aspects of writing program education (WPE) that influences the entangled experiences of graduate teaching assistants with no-prior experience (NPEs): mentorship, the practicum course, and identity formation. NPEs are first-time instructors in the American university system and sometimes first-time graduate students. Alongside critical reflection of the author’s personal experience as an NPE, this project highlights how writing program administrators must integrate graduate student perspectives into the development of WPE opportunities or field-wide statements. Data and scholarship were collected from the fields of Rhetoric, Composition, and Writing Studies, as well as Psychology and Education, to construct a comprehensive literature review. After collection, data was reviewed and coded by the key WPE aspects discussed. The project argues that writing program administrators should provide a web of mentorship opportunities for NPEs, as a multitude of mentoring relationships creates the highest probably of enculturation success. The author highlights the lack of graduate student perspectives in seminal position statements in the field of Composition - specifically in the CCCCs 2019 Position Statement on Mentoring Graduate Students - and recommends revisions to incorporate such perspectives. The author proposes practicum course objectives immersed in student experience, which reflect the needs of NPEs. The project identifies difficulties separating the learning of how to be a graduate student from the learning of how to be a teacher of composition. The author proposes more opportunities for graduate students to discuss frequently asked questions, which is framed as providing more relatable voices and stories for NPES to consider. Overall, this project recognizes a need to engage entangled rhetorics in the formation of WPE opportunities. This framework recognizes that these three aspects of WPE entangle and untangle from one another, causing the boundaries between each to blur. Thus, writing program administrators must consider the NPE perspective in all WPE opportunities to create the most comprehensive enculturation series as possible. Additionally future research is proposed by the author, which emphasizes the continuous need to consider NPE experiences in writing program administration

    Masculinities, race-related stress, and socioeconomic status as predictors of Latinx men’s attitudes of mental health service utilization

    The present study investigated the relationship among predictors of masculinities, race-related stress, and socioeconomic status and Latinx men’s attitudes regarding mental health help-seeking behaviors. Male participants (N=89) were randomly selected from social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook and GroupMe to complete an online survey. Also, participants were recruited via online survey management system (SONA) housed within the College of Education and Human Sciences at Oklahoma State University. Participants completed measures of masculinity, race-related stress, and attitudes of seeking psychological help. Results showed the level of machismo masculinity predicted adult Latinx men’s attitudes towards seeking psychological help. Given the unique need for Latinx men seeking mental health services, more research is needed to better understand the relationship between social predictors and Latinx male attitudes towards seeking help

    Impact of Incident Command System training on non-governmental organizations' emergency response operations in the United States

    This qualitative study delves into Incident Command System (ICS) training dynamics and its efficacy in enhancing collaborative efforts between non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and government agencies during emergency response operations. Anchored in a post-positivist paradigm, the research uncovers the complexities and variabilities of human and organizational behavior in crises through an in-depth thematic analysis of interviews with seasoned emergency response professionals. The analysis illuminates the pivotal role of communication, training, and collaborative strategies in enabling the effective integration of NGOs into emergency responses. It sheds light on the challenges of emergency management collaboration, particularly the issues of miscommunication, the need for a shared operational language, and the transformative potential of ICS training to address these issues. Research findings underscore the necessity for ICS training programs that are customized and adaptable to the diverse needs and operational contexts of NGOs. Structured collaboration and communication strategies are highlight for emergency professionals who navigate the complexities of varied operational languages and protocols. The study advocates a holistic approach to integrating NGOs into ICS-driven emergency responses, promoting cross-cultural communication, leadership across organizational boundaries, and responsive management strategies. It emphasizes the importance of specialized training and sophisticated communication strategies within a comprehensive collaborative framework to enhance NGO contributions to emergency responses. Recommendations include establishing an iterative learning and development cycle to refine collaboration mechanisms and continually, fostering ongoing dialogue and engagement between NGOs and government agencies. The study also identifies the need for adaptable emergency response frameworks, signaling the continuous need for research, improvement, and adaptation. By paving the way for practical applications, the research suggests longitudinal analyses to assess the long-term impact of ICS training, cross-jurisdictional comparisons to understand implementation benefits widely, and the development of training modules tailored specifically to the needs of NGOs. Additionally, the study points to the exploration of technology and digital communication tools as means to modernize emergency response infrastructures, contributing to a more resilient and collaborative national emergency response system

    Impact of long non-coding RNA dysregulation on the cell cycle

    Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been linked to the regulation of the cell cycle. Although AL353138 and LINC01670 are known to be associated with cell cycle regulation, their specific role remains unknown. In order to determine how they affect the cell cycle, we utilized RNA interference (RNAi) to knock them down in primary human lung fibroblasts (n = 3 AL353138, n = 3 LINC01670). Samples then underwent RNA sequencing and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were determined using the edgeR R package (false discovery rate (FDR) 1.5).Throughout the study, 526 DEGs were observed. Of these, 50 DEGs were unique to the AL353138 knockdown. Of which 11 were downregulated (FDR 1.5). Additionally, 346 DEGs were unique to the LINC01670 knockdown. Of these, 100 were downregulated (FDR 1.5). Furthermore, 130 DEGs were common to both AL353138 and LINC01670 knockdowns. Of these, four DEGs were downregulated (FDR 1.5). DEGs are currently undergoing functional annotation using enrichr. This could provide a better understanding of how lncRNAs dysregulate the cell cycle and contribute to a greater understanding of the function of specific lncRNAs

    Coordinated effort: (Re)imagining a world for individuals with dyspraxia/DCD

    This interpretivist arts-based narrative inquiry (ABNI) explores the lived social and educational experiences of “experts by experience” (Shakespeare, 2022), a diverse body of adults, individuals 18 and older living with dyspraxia, developmental coordination disorder (DCD), or other coordination disorders. It focuses on their intersectional experiences within broader social, cultural, and ableist contexts, particularly their stories and perceptions of schools and learning environments. The study presents the analysis of accessible public narratives alongside semi-structured dialogue sessions with six participants - five from the United States and one from the United Kingdom -, four of whom engaged in collaborative collaging alongside the researcher for meaning making. Using narrative inquiry (Clandinin & Connelly, 2006) and nonfiction comics (Galman, 2021), the study presents participants’ stories and experiences. It integrates multiple analytical methods, Qualitative Content Analysis (QCA), Pursuing Members’ Meaning (PMM), and Thematic Analysis (TA), informed by the social-relational and political/relational models of disability and intersectionality. Key findings reveal a persistent lack of dyspraxia/DCD awareness, systemic educational shortcomings, and the critical role of intersectionality in shaping experiences. Narrators highlight their adaptability, resilience, and reframing of deficit-based narratives to view dyspraxia/DCD as a source of strength. This study contributes to qualitative and educational literature by offering a unique arts-based methodology of collaborative collaging and storying experience that expands understanding and amplifies voices of individuals with dyspraxia, developmental coordination disorder (DCD), or other coordination disorders, particularly U.S. adults, through an intersectional lens that considers race, socio-economic status, and cultural background

    Investigating the potential of the Precambrian structures reactivation at Makkah-Jeddah Region in Saudi Arabia

    This study is aimed to investigate the reactivation potential of the Precambrian structures (Ad Damm and Fatima faults) by younger Cenozoic structures due to the opening of the Red Sea. The signs of the Precambrian structures' reactivation (if it genuinely happened) may be manifested as an offset or cross-cutting effect in the Cenozoic lineaments by the Precambrian structures. The study area is located between latitude 20°-22° N and longitude 39°-41° E in the Makkah- Jeddah Region (MJR), which is underlain by the Arabian Shield, a Neoproterozoic group of terranes. The region is seismically active, and earthquakes in the study area pose a risk to both lives and infrastructures. The Arabian Shield has three main periods with significant structural trends. For this study, only Precambrian structures and Cenozoic structures groups are considered using indications of displacement or crosscutting of the Cenozoic structures by the Precambrian structures. Landsat enhanced thematic mapper (ETM+), Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), and Aeromagnetic data were integrated to accomplish this objective. Landsat (ETM+) and SRTM data show a coarse texture gray color unit composed of probably intrusive igneous and metamorphic rocks. These rocks cover most of the area around the Ad Damm and the Fatima faults. Additionally, a Precambrian unit with darker color and finer texture was observed in the NW part of the Ad Damm Fault. Multiple lineaments with different trending directions (NNE-SSW, NE-SW, and NW-SE) were observed on the aeromagnetic map. Previous studies suggest that these lineaments are either Precambrian or Cenozoic. All these lineaments are cutting through the Fatima Fault with no offset. The aeromagnetic map of the area shows different low and high magnetic anomalies with no patterns that can be interpreted as apparent displacement along the Precambrian structures. Based on the integrated interpretation of the utilized data in this study, there is no enough evidence of a reactivation of the Precambrian structures by the Cenozoic structures during the opening of the Red Sea

    Perceptions and property values: The impacts of medical marijuana on rural Oklahoma

    Since the enactment of State Question 788 in 2018, Oklahoma has witnessed a remarkable expansion of its medical marijuana industry, emerging as the largest in the nation in terms of both dispensaries per capita and overall volume. However, the ramifications of this burgeoning sector remain largely unexplored in rural areas of the state. This research aims to achieve two primary objectives: firstly, to collect and evaluate perceptions of community members in rural areas concerning the impacts of the medical marijuana industry, and secondly, to empirically analyze the influence of the industry on property values in nonmetropolitan counties of Oklahoma. To gauge community sentiments, a combination of focus groups and surveys were conducted in Okemah, Oklahoma, a rural community with a notable concentration of dispensaries and growers. While a predominantly negative perception of the industry's presence in the local area was expected, the results show that the community recognized a wide array of impacts and that effects on local health and wellness were largely perceived as positive. The assessment of changes in property values employs a difference-in-difference model utilizing publicly available housing value data spanning from 2016 to 2023 for counties in Oklahoma, Texas, and Kansas (both of which have no type of legalized marijuana). The results show that the passing of medical marijuana legislation in rural Oklahoma corresponds with decreases in property values for non-metropolitan counties in aggregate but increases for low-employment and high-poverty counties. The outcomes of this study hold significance for policymakers in the seven southern states where medical marijuana is legalized

    Recent advances in small molecules for bacterial disease management: what we have learned thus far

    Chemical control of bacterial plant diseases remains problematic in crop production. Rapid changes in bacterial population, through evolution and movement of pathogens, often renders the continuous use of bactericides unsustainable due to development of resistance in bacterial populations. The development of novel approaches for sustainable management of bacterial diseases is therefore an ongoing challenge. Small molecules are those with molecular weight less than 900 Daltons that can permeate biological systems such as bacterial cells where they target several pathways and inhibit biological processes. The past decade has been dubbed the golden era of small molecules research due to renewed interest in them for drug discovery. Over the past few years, our research group has led research in evaluating the efficacy of small molecules against multiple plant pathogens, culminating in the filing of a patent for those that show efficacy against bacterial spot of tomato. Here, we discuss our research results from laboratory screenings, greenhouse, and field trials of approximately ten (10) small molecules against multiple pathogens with emphasis on their effects against bacterial pathogens associated with diseases of vegetable crops. We also present insights into their modes of activities as revealed by metabolomics and gene expression studies, which suggest that the small molecules interact with multiple bacterial pathways. Our results demonstrate that small molecules are a minefield for improving sustainability and environmentally friendly bacterial disease management.Entomology and Plant Patholog
