Heartbeat evoked potential differences between anxiety disorders
This study examined differences in interoceptive processing between individuals with social anxiety and generalized anxiety, using the heartbeat-evoked potential (HEP) as a neural marker of attention to internal bodily signals. HEPs were recorded during a heartbeat counting task to assess the degree of interoceptive attention. Consistent with prior research linking elevated HEP amplitude to perceived internal threat, results showed that individuals with high social anxiety exhibited significantly greater HEP amplitudes compared to those with low anxiety. In contrast, participants with high generalized anxiety did not show increased HEP activity, suggesting distinct neural processing mechanisms across anxiety subtypes. These findings highlight the importance of differentiating between types of anxiety in interoception research and suggest that social anxiety may involve heightened sensitivity to internal cues, which may have implications for diagnosis and treatment.Lew Wentz FoundationPsycholog
Data sharing trends in core otolaryngology journals: A cross-sectional analysis
Background: Data sharing aids in transparency, replicability, and lowers research waste, yet data sharing in otolaryngology is inadequate despite its major impact on patient health and healthcare costs. This study aimed to evaluate the use of data sharing statements in core otolaryngology journals to assess if this impacted data availability.Methods: We performed a search of the public database MEDLINE to identify articles from eight core otolaryngology journals. Screening and data extraction were performed in a masked, duplicate fashion to limit error. General study characteristics and the presence and content of data sharing statements were recorded.Results: 1180 articles were included. Of the included studies, 201(201/1180, 17.03%) contained a data sharing statement. Of these, 174 (174/201, 86.57%) had data made available and were eligible for theme assessment. Hierarchical logistic regression was used to evaluate trends and factors influencing data sharing practices.Conclusion: The variability in data sharing among core otolaryngology journals impacts research transparency and clinical outcomes. Journal-specific policies and response rates reveal gaps in data sharing statements, emphasizing the need for clearer guidelines and improved data accessibility to enhance evidence-based practice
Investigating recruitment and retention strategies in atopic dermatitis clinical trials: A cross-sectional analysis
Objective: This study aims to investigate recruitment and retention strategies in Atopic Dermatitis (AD) clinical trials.Background: AD is a chronic and relapsing inflammatory dermatologic condition marked by erythematous, pruritic lesions. Multiple factors like psychological stress, lifestyle factors, and socioeconomic determinants influence disease progression and treatment outcomes globally. Clinical trials evaluating AD interventions face challenges in recruitment and retention of underserved patient populations, potentially compromising the generalizability of findings to wider populations.Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis following PRISMA guidelines to assess recruitment and retention strategies in AD clinical trials. The relevant clinical trials were acquired in a comprehensive search of MEDLINE (PubMed) and Embase (Elsevier) on May 28, 2024. Data were extracted from trials published between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2023. For statistical analysis, Stata 18 SE (StataCorpStataCorp LLC, College Station, TX) was used to determine the frequencies of recruitment and retention strategies.Results: Of the 32 trials analyzed, only 4/32 (12.5%) integrated recruitment strategies to include underrepresented populations and only 4/32 (12.5%) had planned diversity goals to improve recruitment. Three out of the 32 (9.4%) studies reported challenges with recruitment.Conclusion: Our study highlights the need for inclusive recruitment and retention strategies in AD clinical trials. The lack of diverse representation in clinical trials can contribute to obstacles in medical research and can eventually prevent advancements in treatment outcomes. It is essential to address these gaps to ensure the external validity of research findings and to improve treatment outcomes
Identifying species of white oaks can be a hairy process
Trichomes are hair-like structures commonly found on many plant species, occurring on different parts such as leaves, twigs, buds, and stems (Wang et al, 2021). Trichomes exhibit a range of essential functions in plants including defense against both abiotic and biotic stressors, UV protection, water retention, regulation of gas exchange, and thermal regulation (Wang et al, 2021; Bickford, 2016). Although often simplified as single- or multicellular structures on the plant epidermis, trichomes exhibit considerable variation in shape, function, color, and size (Dyal, 1936). Their morphological diversity makes them valuable for species identification and creating accurate keys (Thomson, 1979; Mohlenbrock et al, 2009).
The genus Quercus section Quercus includes species that are often difficult to identify due to variations in leaf morphology, including width, length, and margins (Nixon, 1993). The morphological variability can result from geographic variation, hybridization, and microbiomes (Hardin, 1979; Manos, 1993). Trichome analysis provides a quantifiable and stable trait for Quercus species identification. Studies have shown that trichome patterns remain consistent across species, allowing for reliable classification (Hardin, 1979). Research on Quercus section Protobalanus has identified distinct trichome characteristics among five species, leading to the development of a detailed identification key using scanning electron imaging, which helped resolve previous misidentifications and provided evidence of hybridization (Manos, 1993). Further work on eastern North American white oaks has refined this approach by quantifying trichome traits such as ray number and spread, enhancing species differentiation, and offering insights into hybridization events (Thomson, 1979).
For my research project, I will build upon previous work (Manos 1993; Thomson 1979) to expand on the current keys for the white oak species of southwest and south-central North America. Specifically, I will leverage herbaria specimens of the following species: Q. welshii, Q. havardii, Q. gambelli, Q. grisea, and Q. turbinella. I will collect trichome data for each species and compare my findings to existing literature. I have been given a key made by Dr. Thomson to aid in the identification of trichomes. The goal is to expand on the key by adding new species (e.g., Q. welshii) to further understand the trichome variation within this species complex. I will also have a chance to look at a few hybrid specimens from Arizona State University, Brigham Young University, and here at Oklahoma State’s herbarium. This will allow me to assess the potential of trichomes to distinguish hybrids. Previous work suggests that hybrids typically exhibit a mixture of the trichomes of parental species. Leadership and social intelligence: An investigative study of chief fire and emergency management officers in Nevada
Leading fire and emergency management departments in today’s world have been challenging for Chief Officers. Understanding social intelligence is imperative in both theoretical inquiry and practical field application for these executives. The components navigated to improve leadership skills and create meaningful relationships are emotional awareness, empathy, social cognition, and emotional management. There has never been a more needed skill by fire and emergency management officers, such as social intelligence. Team cohesion and success rely on the ability to communicate, understand, and relate to the people each lead. A multidimensional discipline framework with underpinnings from psychology, neuroscience, sociology, and cultural studies influences social intelligence.
This study uses the qualitative form of constructivist grounded theory to examine the research question, “How is social intelligence used in the Chief Officer’s leadership, and what relationships result from such use?” To resolve this inquiry, Chief Officers from the State of Nevada were selected in both fire and emergency management fields. They were interviewed, and data was collected for analysis. Through a better understanding of social intelligence, academic and practical training can increase effectiveness by meeting the needs of our profession
Last cold place on earth
This project is a creative work of Climate Fiction, focusing on themes of community and what we do in the end of the world. This piece comes from a place of love for end of the world stories and a desire to understand them. Though I find some of the most popular tropes of apocalyptic media to be less than aspirational, I can sympathize with the desire for everything to end. I think all apocalypse media sees something in the world that isn’t working. It’s some of the only media in which it’s acceptable to revel in tearing it all down. In a way, it’s easy to see a socialist gravitating towards this genre, if not for how deeply individualist it can be. The Last Cold Place in the Whole World wasn’t inspired by World War Z or The Walking Dead but by works where the characters take care of each other. These quieter, community focused solutions are what give me hope for the end of the world. Not many people truly want everything to be violently ended, not in the way that it’s usually shown on television. I wrote The Last Cold Place to be a representation not of wanting the world to end, but who I would want to meet if it did
Characterization of neutrophil activation, netosis and mast cell activation in SARS-COV-2 infection: A translational study utilizing a feline model for COVID-19
Neutrophil activation, neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation (NETosis), and mast cell activation are increasingly recognized as central drivers of severe immunopathology in SARS-CoV-2 infection. Despite extensive human studies, key mechanistic details remain unclear, highlighting the critical need for translational animal models to elucidate pathogenesis and identify therapeutic targets. This study characterizes neutrophil activation, NETosis, and mast cell activation utilizing a translational in vivo and in vitro feline model of COVID-19. Temporal analyses reveal early acute-phase elevations in neutrophil activation markers, including myeloperoxidase, neutrophil elastase, citrullinated histone H3, MPO-DNA complexes, and cell-free DNA. These markers strongly correlate with clinical severity and histopathological outcomes, highlighting the detrimental role of neutrophil hyperactivation during acute infection. Comparative assessment of feline responses to SARS-CoV-2 Delta and Omicron variants reveal significant variations. Delta-infected cats experience severe illness characterized by pronounced respiratory tissue damage and robust neutrophil activation, while Omicron-infected cats exhibited milder symptoms with localized tissue damage. Variant-specific cytokine profiles were noted, with Delta infections inducing intense inflammatory responses, emphasizing variant-dependent immune dynamics. In vitro experiments conducted with feline neutrophils demonstrate the involvement of both ROS-dependent and independent pathways during SARS-CoV-2 induced NETosis. While inhibiting ROS significantly decreased NET formation, residual NETosis persisted, suggesting alternative mechanisms. Silencing of S100A9 consistently decreased neutrophil activation, ROS production, and NET formation, identifying S100A9 as a pivotal regulator and potential therapeutic target. Conversely, DAPP1 knockdown produced variable results, reflecting its complex role in neutrophil signaling. Moreover, we demonstrated the prominence of acute mast cell activation during infection, particularly in lung tissues, which correlated with clinical severity. Subtle elevations in mast cell mediators in brain tissues suggested a possible contribution to neurological symptoms associated with post-COVID syndrome (long COVID). Collectively, our findings validate the feline model as a robust translational tool for investigating immune-driven mechanisms underpinning COVID-19 severity. The distinct immune responses triggered by the Delta and Omicron variants emphasize the necessity for variant-specific therapeutic strategies. Overall, this study underscores the pathological significance of neutrophil and mast cell activation in SARS-CoV-2 infection and highlights potential therapeutic targets to mitigate severe disease manifestations associated with NETosis in COVID-19
Co-worker incivility and well-being: Roles of depersonalization and resilience among frontline hotel employees
Workplace stressors such as co-worker incivility identified as low-intensity, rude, and disrespectful behaviors pose significant threats to both employee well-being and service outcomes, particularly among frontline hotel employees who are central to the guest experience. Guided by Affective Events Theory (AET), this study examines the impact of co-worker incivility on employee well-being, incorporating depersonalization as a mediating mechanism and employee resilience as a potential moderator. Data were collected through an online cross-sectional survey of 322 frontline hotel employees in the United States using Prolific. Measurement scales were adapted from established, validated instruments, and data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) via the R statistical environment.
The study findings reveal that co-worker incivility is significantly negatively associated with employee well-being. In addition, depersonalization mediates this relationship, suggesting that employees who experience incivility may emotionally detach from their roles as a coping mechanism, thereby further undermining their well-being. Contrary to expectations, employee resilience was found not to moderate the relationship between co-worker incivility and depersonalization. By integrating depersonalization as a mediating mechanism, the study advances theoretical understanding of the psychological processes linking workplace mistreatment and employee outcomes. Additionally, it extends the application of AET within the hospitality sector, offering novel insights into the affective dynamics underlying co-worker incivility. Practical implications, emphasizing the importance of interventions that foster civil workplace environments and support employee well-being in hotels are provided
Extracting, evaluating, and enhancing metadata for institutional researchers in Wikidata
Open, non-proprietary persistent identifiers and their associated metadata are invaluable sources of information regarding researchers, research products, and research impact. Our project made use of ORCID iDs and Wikidata QIDs to identify researchers at our institution who have a Wikidata profile. We searched the Wikidata database and extracted QIDs that had an ORCID iD from one of our researchers listed as an external identifier. Next, we extracted metadata from each researcher’s QID, resulting in a list of contributed properties and values. We processed these data, focusing on verifying that individuals were correctly affiliated with our institution, determining frequently occurring properties and values, and selecting properties that would be valuable to add to Wikidata entries. Our institution has a Research Information Management System that provides researchers with an institutional profile containing information about their publications, teaching, and other scholarly endeavors. We plan to create a custom property in Wikidata that will enable us to add a new external identifier to researchers’ Wikidata profiles that links back to their institutional profile. This conference proceeding will overview our methods for extracting Wikidata metadata, the data cleaning and verification process, and the progress we have made in contributing new information to researchers’ Wikidata profiles.falseLibrar
Exploring body dissociation and relational impacts among adult CSA survivors
Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) impacts survivors in a myriad of ways ranging in severity and chronicity. It has been shown that survivors of CSA are more likely to experience dissociation. Body dissociation, a non-pathological form of dissociation, has recently been found to impact survivors’ health, well-being, and intrapersonal and interpersonal relationships, even with subthreshold symptoms of post-traumatic stress (Brancu et al., 2016; Lev-Wiesel et al., 2018). Many studies involving dissociation involve a taxonomic conceptualization of dissociation with a primary focus on pathological dissociation and do not focus on the lived experiences of adult survivors as a phenomena existing on a continuum and its potential relational impact (Loewenstein, 2018; C. J. Price & Thompson, 2007); (Kim et al., 2013; Price & Thompson, 2007; Zhu et al., 2021). Building upon previous research in neurophysiology and contemporary theoretical conceptualizations on the trauma-dissociation relationship, this study utilized a hermeneutic-phenomenology approach and a Merleau-Ponty theoretical frame to better understand the lived experiences of body dissociation among adult CSA survivors and to understand the potential impact of body dissociation among interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships.
Criterion sampling was utilized to recruit participants via listserv email and fliers targeting various institutions, mental health and psychiatric clinics within Oklahoma. The primary researcher and associates independently reviewed interview transcripts (n = 11) using inductive reasoning to identify themes that represent participant experiences. Braun and Clark’s (2006) multiphased process of thematic analysis was utilized, which involved use of the hermeneutic cycle, and regular consultation amongst team members. The research team agreed upon seven themes and nineteen subthemes that reflected the experiences of adult survivors of CSA who reside in the state of Oklahoma. Themes included topics of cognitive disruptions, emotional and somatic impacts, behavioral and relational adaptations, identity and self-concept, post-trauma symptoms, and positive outcomes. Participants provide the field with a deeper understanding on the complex and nuanced experience of dissociation, as well as the varied interpersonal and intrapersonal impacts
