Trends in influenza immunization among pregnant women: A cross-sectional examination of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System from 2017-2020
Background: Maternal influenza vaccination is a vital aspect of prenatal care and is recommended by the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Pregnant individuals with influenza are at a higher risk of serious illness, intensive care unit admission, and many other adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. As of December 2021, data indicates that among women of childbearing age, nearly 50% of flu-associated hospitalizations have been among those who were pregnant. This may be due in part to declining flu vaccination uptake among pregnant individuals. Receiving the flu vaccine in pregnancy can decrease the risk of hospitalization by approximately 40% and can also provide infants with protection for their first few months of life. Given the declining rates of vaccination and the increased risk of serious illness in pregnancy, we sought to examine trends in influenza immunization among pregnant individuals from 2017-2020 and determine if disparities exist by race/ethnicity.Study Design: For this cross-sectional study, we utilized data from BRFSS from 2017-2020 to examine trends in influenza immunization uptake among pregnant individuals overall and by race/ ethnicity. Respondents were included if they identified as being pregnant and responded to a question about flu vaccination, and race/ethnicity was self-reported. We then assessed the prevalence of flu vaccination among pregnant individuals for each BRFSS cycle and then tested for disparities between race/ethnicity groups using X2 -square tests of independence.Results: From 2017-2020, less than half of individuals did not receive a flu vaccine during their pregnancy (4702 of 10,933; 43.01%). Among pregnant individuals, flu vaccine uptake differed significantly by year, with the lowest rate seen in 2018 (27.34%) and the highest in 2020 (44.23%)-- during the COVID-19 pandemic. There was also a statistically significant association between flu vaccination during pregnancy and race/ethnicity (X2 (5)= 59.93, P = 002). Between 2017-2020, only 29.87% of American Indian/Alaskan Native and 29.89% of pregnant individuals received a flu vaccine, compared with 47.72% of individuals who reported as Asian and 38.82% of whom reported as White.Conclusion: Our study showed that pregnant individuals who identified as American Indian/Alaskan Native or Black were less likely to receive the flu vaccine. These findings indicate clear disparities in flu vaccine uptake in pregnancy based on race/ethnicity. Further research into these disparities would be beneficial in order to identify specific factors that could be addressed in order to improve flu vaccination rates among pregnant women overall, as well as for specific groups. The overall low rate of flu vaccination among pregnant individuals from 2017-2020 is concerning and may indicate a need for improvements in patient education and awareness regarding the importance of receiving this vaccine during pregnancy

Edmond multimodal transport hub
The integrative design studio this year asked students to design a multimodal transit hub for the city of Edmond. The proposed building must be able to serve the nearby railroad and bus transportation, as well as provide access for vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Additionally, the building program had to provide both public rooms, retail, and private office spaces. Finally, the building should strive to be sustainable and reduce the energy needed for operations.The proposed design utilizes a mass timber, glulam, and cross-laminated timber structure to support the building. Additionally, daylighting, R-value, and environmental analysis were performed to better understand and address the heating, cooling, and lighting requirements of the building. Improvements to the design such as glass selection, the use of ground source heat pumps, and wall insulation led to a 23.4% overall energy savings
Access to tricyclic heteroarenes by an iodine-promoted cyclization reaction
For many years, investigations on nitrogenous heterocycles have been an essential part of organic chemistry due to their widespread use in medications. Our research examines alternative ways to prepare nitrogen-containing heteroarenes while minimizing the formation of unwanted by-products. Many of our target molecules have structural similarities with biologically active compounds that are commonly used for numerous conditions, such as cancer, anxiety, and fungal infections. By optimizing a preliminary procedure from the Bolliger lab, we were able to improve the isolated yields for the iodine-promoted cyclization step. In this presentation, we will discuss the results of our cyclization reaction and discuss possible reaction mechanisms. Ultimately, we hope our research will pave a pathway to novel species with biologically relevant functional groups
ST elevation myocardial infarction in the presence of pneumoperitoneum
Myocardial infarction (MI) more commonly known as a “heart attack” is a relatively common occurrence with a wide array of potential etiologies. Many if not most MIs result in typical symptoms of angina (chest pain) or anginal equivalents which often is the primary driver to the diagnosis. In patients who are unable to communicate symptoms, such as those who are intubated and sedated, this can be challenging. In this case we discuss a patient who was intubated and sedated who develops a myocardial infarction in the setting of a pneumoperitoneum
Measurement of trilinear gauge boson couplings from WW + WZ → lnu jj events in pp[over ¯] collisions at √s=1.96 TeV
We present a direct measurement of trilinear gauge boson couplings at γWW and ZWW vertices in WW and WZ events produced inpp[over ¯]collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV. We consider events with one electron or muon, missing transverse energy, and at least two jets. The data were collected using the D0 detector and correspond to 1.1 fb⁻¹ of integrated luminosity.Physic

Evidence for a particle produced in association with weak bosons and decaying to a bottom-antibottom quark pair in Higgs boson searches at the Tevatron
We combine searches by the CDF and D0 Collaborations for the associated production of a Higgs boson with a W or Z boson and subsequent decay of the Higgs boson to a bottom-antibottom quark pair. The data, originating from Fermilab Tevatron pp[over ¯] collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV, correspond to integrated luminosities of up to 9.7 fb⁻¹. The searches are conducted for a Higgs boson with mass in the range 100–150 GeV/c². We observe an excess of events in the data compared with the background predictions, which is most significant in the mass range between 120 and 135 GeV/c². The largest local significance is 3.3 standard deviations, corresponding to a global significance of 3.1 standard deviations. We interpret this as evidence for the presence of a new particle consistent with the standard model Higgs boson, which is produced in association with a weak vector boson and decays to a bottom-antibottom quark pair.Physic
Co-parenting styles, custody, and parenting conflict prior to divorce as predictors of child outcomes in divorce
The purpose of this study is to better understand the role of co-parenting styles as a predictor of child outcomes and a moderator in the relationship between divorce factors such as parent conflict prior to divorce (PCPD) or child custody arrangements and divorce-related child outcomes. Multiple regression was used to test (a) co-parenting style, custody, and PCPD as predictors of child prosocial behaviors and total difficulties, (b) co-parenting styles as a moderator in the relationships between PCPD and child prosocial behaviors and total difficulties, and (c) co-parenting style as a moderator between child custody and child prosocial behaviors and total difficulties. Analyses were tested in female (N = 4,556) and male (N = 3,532) samples separately. Multiple regression without interactions showed that co-parenting styles, child custody, and PCPD each predicted unique variance in both child prosocial behavior and total difficulties outcomes. The two cooperative co-parenting styles (perfect pals and cooperative colleagues) and the single-parent co-parenting style (dissolved duos) all predicted more favorable child outcomes than the two more conflictual co-parenting styles (angry associates and fiery foes) in both the male and female samples. There was a significant interaction between co-parenting styles and PCPD in predicting child total difficulties in the male sample, with the positive relationship between PCPD and total difficulties being stronger for the fiery foes group compared to every other group. There was also a significant interaction between child custody and co-parenting styles in predicting both child prosocial behaviors and total difficulties in the female sample. The findings of this study have important implications for co-parenting educators, mental health professionals, and other professionals who work with divorcing families
