Negative affect changes, emptiness, and interpersonal conflict related to binge eating and borderline personality traits
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a disorder characterized by unstable self-image, conflictual interpersonal relationships, emotional dysregulation, and marked impulsivity. One form of impulsivity commonly seen in BPD is binge eating; however, little is known about this maladaptive behavior in the context of BPD. Conversely, there are multiple theories of binge eating in the eating disorder literature that suggest binge eating occurs as a result of heightened levels of negative affect. Given that BPD and eating disorders share emotional dysregulation and impulsivity as maintaining mechanisms of each respective disorder, these theories of binge eating may provide a model for binge eating in BPD. Existing literature suggests that both interpersonal conflict and feelings of emotional emptiness may precede binge episodes in those with eating disorders. The current study sought to explore interpersonal conflict and feelings of emptiness as antecedents to binge eating behaviors in those with BPD traits. Using ecological momentary assessment, binge episodes, affect, feelings of emptiness, and interpersonal conflict were tracked throughout the day for fourteen days in undergraduate students with BPD traits. The current study found that momentary feelings of emptiness at the time of the binge eating episode significantly predicted increased odds of a binge episode occurring. Additionally, momentary feelings of emptiness, as well as other negative affects, increase following a binge episode. Finally, interpersonal conflict significantly predicted increased odds of a binge episode occurring, but this relationship did not hold when accounting for the effects of negative affect and momentary impulsivity. Results suggest treatment of binge eating within BPD should include elements of acceptance of negative affects including emptiness, such as in dialectical behavior therapy distress tolerance skills training

Exploring the ecological implications of seed defense strategies in Oklahoma forests
An important but often overlooked topic in plant community research explores bottlenecks to plant recruitment and survival due to seed predation (granivory). Often, granivory has a higher impact on seedling survival than microsite conditions or pathogens. Little is known about the various and intertwined factors by which granivores choose to consume seeds, which this ongoing study addresses by analyzing three factors. One factor is habitat proximity; predator dynamics change relative to the forest edge, but few studies analyze these effects on granivory. Another factor is seed density in the context of the Janzen-Connell (J-C) hypothesis, which explains that herbivores selectively prey on seeds and seedlings closer to conspecific adults. The last factor is crypsis, which can allow seeds to be visually overlooked by predators.Aim 1: How does seed crypsis affect density-dependent seed predation? Aim 2: How does seed crypsis interact with density and habitat proximity to affect granivory? Hypothesis 1: Camouflaged seeds will allow them to go unnoticed by predators leading to removal rates that follow J-C patterns, thereby exhibiting negative density dependence. Hypothesis 2: Removal rates of seeds closer to the forest edge will be significantly different from those further from the forest edge.The study design consists of two trials of 90 open buckets with Helianthus annuus seeds and sand. Each trial accommodates 3 replicates of 2 treatment groups: 3 seed density groups to test density dependence and 10 sand colors to test crypsis. The first 45 buckets represent the first half closest to the forest edge. Buckets were deployed in the winter and spring of 2022-2023 and were visited daily to monitor seed removal until all seeds are gone. We found that there was significantly less predation in lower-density treatments and that there was less predation against purple and pink backgrounds. Predicting maternal auxin-signaling networks for seed dormancy regulation in Arabidopsis
Auxin, like ABA, promotes seed dormancy, but how auxin promotes seed dormancy is not well understood. In studying seed dormancy regulation, we found that AUXIN SIGNALING F-BOX PROTEIN 1 (AFB1) and 5 maternally promoted seed dormancy and AFB1 had a stronger effect than AFB5. AFB1 and 5 were expressed in the funiculus and the chalazal seed coat at the mature embryo stage, and AFB1, not AFB5, was also transiently expressed in a small chalazal seed coat region surrounding the remnant funiculus during seed imbibition. Analysis of publically available datasets for genes expressed in the funiculus and seed coat at the mature embryo stage allowed the assignment of the six AFBs into two groups: TIR1, AFB1 and 4 as the first group with higher expression levels in the funiculus than in the chalazal seed coat, and AFB2, 3 and 5 as the second group with higher expression levels in the chalazal seed coat than in the funiculus. It was then assumed that auxin-upregulated and -downregulated genes associated with the first AFB group should be expressed at higher and lower levels in the funiculus than in the chalazal seed coat, respectively, and the reverse is assumed for those associated with the second AFB group. Three potential auxin-signaling networks including 30 genes were identified based on these assumptions and high linear correlation in expression within each group. These networks do not overlap in components and two-thirds of the genes are known or predicted to function in seed germination either positively or negatively. The presence of both positive and negative regulators in each of the networks is consistent with the plant’s ability to either remain dormant or go into germination in response to environmental conditions. Development of a brief personalized mobile intervention for nonsuicidal self-injury
Nonsuicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) is a significant physical and mental health concern that may result in tissue damage, depression, anxiety, and suicidal behaviors. However, short-term, accessible treatment for individuals engaging in (NSSI) are limited. While NSSI interventions have been developed, the duration and cost of treatment limit implementation. To date, there are no existing short-term mobile interventions for NSSI that targets its potential mechanisms (e.g., emotion regulation). Current study 1) developed a 2-week personalized mobile intervention by adapting existing emotion regulation-based treatments, 2) revised intervention after receiving expert feedback, and 3) conducted an open uncontrolled pilot trial (n=5) to assess for acceptability, credibility, utility, and feasibility of the intervention

CymSTAR ethernet-to-synchro project
Research available technologies and design a hardware, software product that enables a host computer to drive a synchro receiver, a gauge or needle in a plane cockpit using a synchro transmitter that is controlled over an ethernet protocol. This is to help military pilots get a more realistic feel in a simulated aircraft when they turn a dial or knob. We need the host computer to be able to transfer/receive through a RJ45 Ethernet Cable. The transferred information will be to tell the receiver Synchro to turn a dial or a knob to an accurate told position. The receiving information will be to tell the host computer that the receiver Synchro has turned to the correct position. Shown in the figure below is the full system, and everything in the blue box is what we are developing, the Transceiver Synchro
Analyses of gait parameters and fall risk in Korean older adults
More than one in four older adults fall each year. As the first fall doubles one’s chances of falling again, fall prevention in older adults is a public health priority. Since it is well-established that most falls occur on flat surfaces during walking, identifying the changes in gait parameters before one’s first fall may be a strong predictor of falling.PURPOSE: To examine gait parameters in older adults associated with the risk of falls.METHODS: 200 older adults (72.8 ± 5.6 years; 74% women) participated in the study. Participants’ gait parameters were measured through a gait analysis system. The Fall Risk Assessment (FRA) system measured sensory, nervous, integrated balance abilities, and musculoskeletal systems to assess fall risks. Participants were classified into one of two groups: low- and high-risk of falls based on the FRA scores. Independent t-tests were used to compare the gait parameters between the two groups. One-way ANOVAs were performed to compare the differences in gait parameters by age (65-69, 70-74, 75-79, and ≥80 years). Lastly, Pearson correlation and logistic regression were used to examine variables in step length and fall risk.RESULTS: For both men and women, there were significant differences (p < .001) in all gait parameters between the two groups except for cadence in men. There were also significant changes in trends of gait parameters by age in both men and women except for cadence in men (Ptrend <.001). Lastly, significant positive correlations were observed between adjusted stride length (stride length/height) and the FRA scores (r=.524 and .323 for men and women, respectively). For both men and women, the participants in the fourth quartile (shorter) of adjusted stride length were more likely to increase one’s fall risk (OR = 9.10 and 7.88; 95% CI: 1.39, 59.62 and 2.50, 24.84 for men and women, respectively) compared to the first quartile (longer).CONCLUSION: The risk of falls was increased by changes in gait parameters such as shorter and slower gait cycles and higher proportions of the stance phase and double supporting phase. Impact of BioFire FilmArray blood culture identification panel 2 (BCID2) and antimicrobial stewardship interventions on time to optimal antimicrobial therapy in patients with positive blood cultures
Background: Delayed treatment of bloodstream infections (BSI) is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Conventional methods for organism identification and susceptibility data from blood cultures can take on average 2-5 days, with pathogen identification taking longer. Technological advancements in gene-based polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests amplify DNA targets from positive blood cultures which can shorten the identification time of certain organisms and resistance genes, aiding in optimization of antimicrobial therapy. Our goal is to evaluate the impact of the Biofire FilmArray Blood Culture Identification Panel 2 (BCID2) combined with real-time ASP intervention on time to optimal antimicrobial therapy and clinical outcomes.Methods: This study has a letter of determination from the Oklahoma State University (OSU) Center for Health Sciences IRB as a multidisciplinary quality improvement initiative. This pre/post quasiexperimental study conducted at OSU Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, will include adult inpatients with at least 1 positive blood cultures from a 6-month period prior to implementation of the BCID2 panel and for 6 months post-implementation. Patients less than 18 years of age, those with identical positive blood cultures within previous 7 days, positive blood cultures at an outlying facility, transitioned to CMO or died within 24 hours of positive blood cultures and patients with BSI with an organism not included on the BCID2 panel were excluded. Demographic information will be collected including comorbid health conditions, risk factors for BSI, infection source, and clinical status. The primary endpoints include time to effective therapy and time to optimal therapy. Secondary outcomes include: 30-day all-cause mortality, hospital length of stay, and microbiologic clearance and 30-day readmission with bacteremia.Results: The pre-intervention group has a final included patient population of 125 for demographic, primary, and secondary endpoints, while the post-intervention group has 89 included for demographic and primary endpoints and 62 included in secondary outcomes with final number pending. Primary endpoint data between the two groups shows a 22-hour difference in average time to pathogen ID (51 hours (pre) vs. 29 hours (post)), a 1.6-hour difference in average time to effective therapy (17.4 hours (pre) vs. 15.8 hours (post)), and a 15.1-hour difference in average time to optimal therapy (61.4 hours (pre) vs. 45.3 hours (post)). Secondary endpoint data has shown decreased time to microbiologic cure (55.6 hours (pre) vs. 49.1 hours (post)) and decreased length of stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) (3.9 days (pre) vs. 2.4 days (post)) and in the hospital total (10.8 days (pre) vs. 9 (post)). Adverse event data has shown similar rates of 30-day mortality (11.2% (pre) vs. 12.9% (post)), but a possible increase in 30- day readmission with bacteremia (0.8% (pre) vs. 6.5% (post)).Conclusions: Based on preliminary data the implementation of the BCID2 panel has decreased time to pathogen identification and optimal therapy, but has similar time to effective therapy. Data also shows a 6.5-hour difference in microbiologic clearance time with over 1.5 and 1.8-day difference in ICU and total length of stay. Further investigation into statistical significance of final data set needs to be completed
