    Effect of aerobic exercise for improving concussion symptoms compared to traditional rest or placebo-like stretching in adolescents

    Clinical Scenario: Children under the age of 18 are still developing physically, cognitively, neurologically, and emotionally. When adolescents obtain a concussion, it can hinder their developmental skills and put them at high risk for future concussions and/or second impact syndrome, meaning sustaining another concussion before full recovery which can exacerbate symptoms to become even more severe. Recent studies have suggested that early activity within the first week of injury had decreases in rate of delayed recovery and reduction in concussive symptoms.Clinical Question: Is sub-symptom aerobic exercise more effective at improving concussion symptoms in adolescents compared to traditional rest or placebo-like stretching?Summary of Key Findings: Three articles were included to investigate the effectiveness of sub-symptom threshold aerobic exercise in adolescents with concussion. Two articles demonstrated level 2 evidence while one article demonstrated level 3. All articles concluded suggested that early sub-symptom aerobic exercise was the most effective treatment intervention compared to placebo-like stretching and traditional rest.Clinical Bottom Line: Sufficient evidence has demonstrated that sub-symptom threshold aerobic exercise is more effective in self-reported symptom reduction than placebo-like stretching and traditional rest in adolescents with sport-related concussion.Strength of Recommendation: According to the SORT scale, Level A evidence demonstrates that sub-symptoms threshold aerobic exercise decreases symptoms in adolescents with concussion more effectively than other interventions

    Five anthropogenic factors that will radically alter forest conditions and management needs in the Northern United States

    The Northern United States includes the 20 states bounded by Maine, Maryland, Missouri, and Minnesota. With 70 million ha of forestland and 124 million people, it is the most densely forested (42% of land area) and most densely populated (74 people/km2) quadrant of the United States. Three recent, large-scale, multiresource assessments of forest conditions provide insight about trends and issues in the North, and collectively these and other supporting documents highlight factors that will be extraordinarily influential in large-scale northern forest management needs over the next 50 years. This review article discusses five of those factors: (1) northern forests lack age-class diversity and will uniformly grow old without management interventions or natural disturbances, (2) the area of forestland in the North will decrease as a consequence of expanding urban areas, (3) invasive species will alter forest density, diversity, and function, (4) management intensity for timber is low in northern forests and likely to remain so, and (5) management for nontimber objectives will gain relevance but will be challenging to implement. Suggested actions to address these factors include the following: develop quantifiable state and regional goals for forest diversity, understand the spatial and structural impacts of urban expansion on forests, develop symbiotic relationships among forest owners, forest managers, forest industry and the other stakeholders to support contemporary conservation goals, and work to understand the many dimensions of forest change. In the next several decades, climate change seems unlikely to overwhelm or negate any of the five factors discussed in this article; rather it will add another complicating dimension.Natural Resource Ecology and Managemen

    This data is associated with the article "Effects of environmental factors on sucker catch rate, size structure, species composition, and precision from boat electrofishing." The data consists of two XLSX files and one README file associated with the methodology and documentation to allow for replication and verification of findings.Catostomidae (catostomids) are suckers of the order Cyprinifores and the majority of species are native to North America; however, species in this group are understudied and rarely managed. The popularity in bowfishing and gigging for suckers in the United States has increased concerns related to overfishing. Little information exists about the relative gear effectiveness for sampling catostomids. Our study objective was to evaluate the relative effectiveness of boat electrofishing for sampling Black Redhorse Moxostoma duquesnei, Golden Redhorse M. erythrurum, Northern Hogsucker Hypentelium nigricans, White Sucker, and Spotted Sucker populations in Lake Eucha, OK. We used an information theoretic approach to determine the abiotic variables related to sucker catch per effort (C/f). Our analysis indicated that sucker C/f was highest during night and decreased with increasing water temperature. Sucker size structure was significantly different between daytime and nighttime samples; however, effect size estimates for size structure comparisons indicated size distributions exhibited moderate overlap. Distributional comparisons indicated daytime and nighttime samples were similar for fish >180 mm total length (TL). Effect size estimates also suggested little association between the proportion of each species captured and time of day or water temperature. Night electrofishing at water temperatures from 16-25 ⁰C yielded the most precise C/f estimates. If managers are interested in precision, then we recommend night electrofishing suckers in reservoirs at water temperatures from 16-25 ⁰C; though, if total number of suckers is more important than precision, samples taken at night from 6-15 ⁰C are recommended. Further study of the relationship between abiotic variables and catostomid catchability using various gears would be beneficial to agencies interested in these populations.Natural Resource Ecology and Managemen

    Exploring factors associated with Chinese-Americans’ willingness to receive an additional hypothetical annual dose of the COVID-19 vaccine

    Chinese-Americans are one of the largest groups of Asian-Americans in the US with distinctive behavioral and cultural characteristics that influence health service use. Although Chinese-Americans have significantly higher COVID-19-related mortality rates, relative to other racial and ethnic groups, limited literature is available examining their willingness to accept the COVID-19 vaccine. With recent development of the combination influenza-COVID-19 vaccine by biotechnology companies to mitigate COVID-19 infection, we examined factors associated with Chinese-Americans’ acceptance of hypothetical annual doses of COVID-19 vaccination before the vaccine rollout. A total of 241 Chinese-Americans who received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine completed an online questionnaire developed and based on health behavior theories. Our results indicated that Chinese-American participants who were satisfied with their prior COVID-19 vaccination experience, who had more accurate knowledge and perceived higher susceptibility of getting COVID-19, were more willing to receive the annual COVID-19 vaccine in the future. The findings of our current study may be used to guide the development of strategic messages to promote uptake of the annual COVID-19 vaccine by Chinese-Americans in the U.S.Community Health Sciences, Counseling and Counseling Psycholog

    Book of seven seeds

    The Book of Seven Seeds is a collection of historical fiction short-stories centered around the transition of medieval-Islamic Spain to Catholic Spain. As additional material, there are two maps that I created to highlight various themes within the story. One metaphor which is Spain is Granada which both refers to the name of the last city conquered by the Catholics to unify Spain, and the fruit it translates too which is pomegranate. The other map is an artistic representation of what I interpret the ancient City of Tenochtitlan may have looked like. There are seven of these short stories which mimic the style of Miguel de Cervantes in his infamous novel Don Quixote, where Cervantes uses seven interpolated stories to make political commentary. Since Cervantes uses humor by using modern slang in a historical context, I decided to also use modern humor and themes throughout the thesis. These stories take various perspectives as it pertains to time, gender, religion, location, and economic situation. This is to draw differing perspectives on various historical events as an everyday person may have experienced the event. The events in history were chosen to visit the unique moments of Spanish history such as the conquering of the City of Granada, the execution of Christians in the City of Cordoba, the conquering of the City of Tenochtitlan, and more. There are also various characters and situations that are a nod to Don Quixote, such as gypsies, windmills, giants, and sheep

    Healthcare professionals' approaches in discussing sexual health and exploring syphilis screening challenges

    Introduction. the global and local prevalence of syphilis, noting a resurgence in recent years, particularly in the United States and Oklahoma. Despite established treatment methods, there is a rise in reported cases, emphasizing the need for effective screening. Healthcare providers play a crucial role in initiating discussions about sexual health, and encouraging their patients to get a syphilis test. Due to this, studying healthcare professionals' approaches to sexual health discussions and identify barriers at various levels affecting syphilis screening, help to address this public health issue. Purpose. The study aims to comprehend healthcare professionals' strategies in discussing sexual health with patients and identify barriers at individual, practice, and healthcare system levels that influence syphilis screening. Method. The study employed a semi-structured interview in three rural Oklahoma communities. Ten participants, primarily women and White, were interviewed, with ages ranging from 30 to 64 and varied professional backgrounds. Recruitment utilized diverse channels, and data collection occurred through one-on-one interviews conducted via phone or video conference. Interviews were guided by an interview guide, audio-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using salient belief elicitation methods. Themes were identified, refined, and organized, forming the basis for the analysis. Result. In the realm of sexual health communication, healthcare professionals deploy various strategies, such as responding to patient-initiated conversations, addressing symptoms, discussing STI testing, normalizing sexual healthcare, creating a comfortable setting, identifying risk behaviors, and delivering health education. Barriers to syphilis screening were explored at three levels: patient/client-oriented (e.g. fear of judgment and stigma, financial challenges, lack of awareness,…), practice or clinic-oriented (e.g. appointment scheduling issues, complex test ordering processes, staff shortages, and healthcare provider hesitancy), and healthcare system-oriented (e.g. financial and insurance barriers and the full restoration of services). Conclusion. This study illuminated the diverse strategies utilized by healthcare professionals to initiate conversations about sexual health and provided a detailed understanding of the challenges faced by rural residents in obtaining syphilis screening from the healthcare providers perspective. Given the ongoing prevalence of syphilis, integrating the insights gained from this study into public health practice is crucial

    Investigating vigilance for auditory, visual, and haptic interfaces in alarm monitoring

    There are many alarms in healthcare systems that are primarily visual and auditory modalities. Alarms can occur thousands of times a day and can be stressful for clinicians. The overabundance of alarms leads to alarm fatigue. Alarm fatigue is a large patient safety issue as alarms may be silenced or not responded to in a timely manner. Introduction of a new information modality, such as a touchless haptic interface, could mitigate the effects of the vigilance decrement and alarm fatigue because of multiple resource theory and the idea that we have limited cognitive resources. The objective of this work is to investigate the use of a touchless haptic interface in an alarm monitoring vigilance task compared to visual and auditory interfaces. Data was collected on the reaction times of stimuli response to understand cognitive load and the number of correct detections, false positives, and false negatives to understand performance. Participants (N=36) completed a vigilance task in one of the three modality groups where they were asked to identify a stimulus over a 40-minute period. Mixed-effects linear regression models were built to analyze the differences between modalities and blocks. The main finding of this work is that visual interfaces perform best for alarm monitoring compared to auditory and haptic alarms; however, it was also shown that haptic interfaces may have a lower cognitive load compared to auditory interfaces. Therefore, haptic interfaces may be a promising avenue for offsetting information in healthcare alarm monitoring applications

    Secondary mathematics teachers' experiences with mathematics coaching

    As large expenditures are made every year to support the professional learning of teachers, it is critical to know if these endeavors are effective. Mathematics coaching has become an avenue that is believed to be an effective form of professional development in supporting mathematics teachers in their own improvement of teaching mathematics. However, it is unknown, particularly at the secondary level, whether or not mathematics coaching holds the same promise as it does in other subject areas or grade levels. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the experiences of secondary mathematics teachers who have worked with a mathematics coach. The three research questions that guided this exploration were (1) what are the experiences of secondary mathematics teachers working with a coach, (2) what are the secondary mathematics teachers’ perceptions of the role of a coach, and (3) in what ways do secondary mathematics teachers feel they have changed as a result of working with a coach? Fifty-six secondary mathematics teachers from across the United States responded to a survey containing both closed- and open-ended questions about their coaching experience. Four of these participants were questioned further through the use of a semi-structured interview. Results indicated that almost 70% of the participants indicated that coaching was either very beneficial or somewhat beneficial. Meaningful elements of the coaching experience included the knowledge of the coach, the availability of the coach, the relevance of the content of the coaching interactions, the teacher-coach relationship, and exposure to new ideas. Furthermore, interviews revealed that participants didn’t always understand the role or purpose of the coach. Finally, participants indicated changes in a variety of areas such as curriculum, instructional strategies, planning, and confidence. These findings provide support for mathematics coaching at the secondary level as a form of effective professional learning for most participants

    Recent advances in nanocarrier-based therapeutic and diagnostic approaches in tuberculosis

    Tuberculosis is the second most fatal infectious disease; each year, it causes millions of deaths world-wide. Although several anti-TB drugs are currently available, the problem with these drugs is that they require a prolonged duration of treatment, with high drug doses. In addition, patient non-adherence to therapy subsequently leads to the development of multidrug-resistant and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis. Therefore, we need to develop an effective and robust nano-carrier-based drug delivery system to overcome these issues and improve the therapeutic potential of drug dose/duration and patient compliance. This review article focuses on the currently available various nanotechnology-based therapeutic approaches, including lipid nanoparticles, polymeric particles, carbon nanotubes, glucan, and alginate-based nanocarrier systems for effective anti-TB drug delivery to host macrophage for myco-bacterium killing. Finally, we also present some promising recent nanotechnology-based mycobacterial detection systems using silver nanoparticles, silica nanoparticles, magnetic nanoparticles, quantum dots, and magnetic barcode assay that have recently emerged as the latest diagnostic tool. Functionalized nanomaterials for emerging Aggregation-induced photodynamic therapy as next-generation theranostics have also been discussed as a novel option for T.B. diagnosis and therapy.Physiological Science
