    Geodetic movement monitoring of dams and fracture characterization of foundation rock in Northeast Oklahoma

    The Grand River Dam Authority (GRDA) is responsible for maintaining power-producing facilities in Northeast Oklahoma and keeping up with the local energy demand. Because the structural nature of the dam foundations is largely unknown in this area, we have partnered with the GRDA to assist in evaluating the structural integrity of the rock foundation beneath the dam facilities in Mayes County, Oklahoma, and to provide further information on the nature of the weaknesses in the rock strata. This study uses geodetic data to extend the 1.5-year Global Navigation Satellite Systems record on the structural monitoring of the concrete portion of the Robert S. Kerr Dam and provides new geodetic data on the Robert S. Kerr Embankment, the Salina Pumped Storage Project, and Salina Dike. In addition, this project uses the available geophysical logs from cores that were drilled recently at the Robert S. Kerr Dam to quantify the fracture frequency within the subsurface. This study found that the structural movement of the Robert S. Kerr Dam is based on the ambient air temperature changes throughout the year, and that the overlying Reeds Spring Formation contained the highest fracture frequency. With both fracture characterization and geodetic movement monitoring, the GRDA can decide the next best course of action for the dams to ensure that the energy demands are met and the residents of Mayes County live in safety

    Wildland urban interface: A critical analysis of household preparedness in southern Logan County, Oklahoma

    The purpose of this study is to critically analyze the preparedness of residents of southern Logan County, Oklahoma who reside in a wildland-urban interface area and who experienced the Simpson Fire on March 31st, 2023. The research question for this study is: What is the impact of a wildfire on household awareness and preparedness in a wildland-urban interface area in southern Logan County, Oklahoma? This qualitative study was informed by interpretivism utilizing an inductive system of logic. Research methods includes a review of wildfire and wildland-urban interface literature in Oklahoma and other geographical areas. 19 semi-structured, in-person, and Zoom interviews were conducted with residents who experienced the Simpson Fire, and the data obtained was analyzed through word frequency with Atlas.ti, and manual content analysis. The content analysis of the rich and descriptive interviews was developed into four themes, 10 categories, and 28 codes through multiple rounds of revision and re-analysis. Thematically, initial awareness of the Simpson Fire was found to be of very short notice and lacking. Pre-wildfire preparedness was insufficient and post-wildfire preparedness noted for some. Those interviewed understood the wildland-urban interface and its application but were not familiar with the technical FEMA definition. Experiences of the Simpson Fire should lead to better awareness and preparedness actions for future wildfire events. This research serves to explore future actions by both residents and first responders to improve wildfire awareness and preparedness. Further research in these actions has the capability to enhance knowledge of wildfire preparedness in Logan County

    Revitalizing MPower & boosting revenue

    Our senior design team has the privilege of working with the nonprofit organization, MPower, this semester to help increase their revenue. MPower serves adults with developmental disabilities (who they refer to as clients) through residential services, an adult day center, and vocational services. MPower has asked us to focus most of our efforts on the vocational services which is where they provide employment for their clients. They receive funding from the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, Payne County United Way, and local thrift store Elite Repeat. In the past year and half, they have had to take about half a million dollars out of savings to combat inflation and wage increases. After visiting their site and speaking at length with the directors of MPower, we decided to focus our efforts where we think we can make the biggest difference. We decided to help them restructure their contract pricing and increase their brand visibility. MPower establishes contracts with government entities and private businesses for the work their clients do. The contracts include the scope of the work they will be doing and the price they will get paid to do it. After reviewing their financial information, they are pricing themselves much lower than the market rate. For a lot of their jobs, they are only getting paid enough to cover raw materials, so they have to use savings to pay their staff and clients. We performed an economic analysis to provide MPower with a pricing formula template (in the form of an Excel sheet) for them to use as a tool when determining how much to charge for their work. A few other issues we observed were lack of work, donors, and overall visibility. We think the root of these issues are due to low brand awareness. We sent out a survey to the OSU community to verify our hypothesis. Out of 122 responses, only 7.4% percent of responders had ever heard of MPower. It was the least known non-profit out of the six non-profits (all in Stillwater) that we asked about. We decided to form a marketing plan for MPower and provide them with a new website prototype to boost their outreach and connect them with large donors to provide funding and large companies to provide work. This included creating a Content Calendar (schedule for when to post content on social media) for them, creating a prototype for a new website, and hiring an intern to manage and further improve their social media outreach. We believe that these actions will help MPower both in the present and in the future by not only diversifying and increasing their revenue streams but also improving their visibility and connections with the local Stillwater community

    Digging into digital: Investigating the self-perceived social media competency of Oklahoma Master Gardeners

    Social media platforms exhibit the capacity to serve as a beneficial tool for Cooperative Extension Service outreach endeavors. However, Extension educators face barriers adopting these platforms, including time constraints and lack of training. This study investigated whether Oklahoma’s Extension Master Gardeners (OMGs) could support social media efforts by assessing their self-perceived social media competency. Overall, 219 OMGs completed an online survey with 28 Likert-scale questions representing four competency constructs: technical usability, content interpretation, content generation, and anticipatory reflection. Scores were relatively high across constructs, though age impacted efficacy. Significant differences emerged between age categories for technical usability, content interpretation, and content generation; 65+ year olds reported lower competence than middle aged groups, reinforcing assumptions about Digital Natives and Immigrants. Differences also existed between natives and immigrants for technical usability only, indicating generational technology exposure affects platform navigation abilities. No correlation occurred between competency and OMG tenure, inferring skills come from external social media experience versus training. Tailored programming by age alongside incorporating social media into curriculum could elevate competencies. Oklahoma Master Gardeners demonstrate potential assisting Extension’s online efforts of combatting horticulture misinformation online and guiding community members to credible Extension resources

    Tools for automated circuiting of large vertical borehole fields – a preliminary investigation

    Recent developments in automated vertical borehole ground heat exchanger design tools can reduce the required engineering time and improve the resulting ground heat exchanger designs by taking full advantage of available property. However, current practice when designing irregularly shaped borefields is to minimize the total drilling rather than the installation cost or life cycle cost of the system. Total drilling can serve as a proxy for total installation cost, but neglecting the cost of horizontal piping and trenching may be misleading in some circumstances. This paper describes the initial development of a tool to estimate the installation cost of a ground heat exchanger corresponding to an arbitrary borefield. To complete this task, the design tool automatically determines the trenching network and pipe network required to connect the boreholes and heat pump of the ground heat exchanger, sizes the pipes in the pipe system to meet given hydraulic constraints, and then estimates the installation cost from the resulting trench and pipe network. The trench and pipe network synthesis consists of a hierarchical k-means clustering algorithm which groups boreholes into individual vaults then circuits. Circuits are separated into groups so that their pipe systems can be routed through a handful of vaults. From this grouping, a trenching network is created with a pathing algorithm, shortest path algorithm, and minimum spanning tree algorithm. Together, these algorithms form a trench network that can stay within irregularly shaped property boundaries, avoid user-defined obstructions, and produce a trench network without a large surplus of extra trenching. The pipe network is created with the trench network, the borehole grouping, and user-given network type (i.e., direct return, reverse return, etc.)

    Aerodynamic plant model development and validation

    This thesis focuses on enhancing aerodynamic plant model estimations for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. The research investigates the accuracy of various computational estimation methods - including vortex lattice methods, semi-empirical analyses, and computational fluid dynamics. These estimations are then compared against flight test data. Utilization of scripted maneuvers, with recovery systems, are explored to increase the efficiency and safety of flight testing. The flight test data is post-processed, and equation-error and output-error system identification methodologies are used to extract parameter estimates and confidence intervals from the flight maneuvers. Findings indicate that SolidWorks and FlightStream provide consistent static term estimations, Athena Vortex Lattice is superior for dynamic derivatives, and SolidWorks CFD offers the most accurate control effectiveness modeling. This comparative analysis reveals that a combined computational approach yields the most representative aerodynamic plant models. The research suggests future directions, including the application of computationally estimated derivatives in maneuver design and execution using ArduPilot's SITL. These steps aim to further refine the flight data-extracted estimates and provide even more precision in the aerodynamic plant models

    Effects of exercise on heartbeat detection and self-focus in social anxiety

    Social anxiety (SA) is one of the most common psychological disorders, with a lifetime prevalence rate of 13%. Further, SA is accompanied by various distressing (e.g., negative emotions, perception of poor social skills) and impairing (e.g., attentional bias, social avoidance) symptoms. Of these symptoms, ruminative self-focus serves as a maintenance factor for SA. For example, a person may have difficulty shifting focus away from threatening internal sensations (e.g., sweating, increased heartrate) to focus on the task at hand (e.g., conversation topic). However, aerobic exercise may serve as a health behavior which limits the impact of this attentional bias and reduces SA overall. Psychophysiological measures of attention (e.g., EEG) can provide objective markers of the salubrious effect of exercise on ruminative self-focus in those with SA. Thus, this study sought to examine the effect of acute aerobic exercise on cognitive performance, internal attentional bias, and behavioral responses in those with high SA and those with low SA. This study recruited 51 participants using an online recruitment system to examine this research question. Results indicated a main effect of ruminative self-focus when comparing high and low SA. Additionally, this study found an exposure or habituation effect of exercise in a social anxiety sample. This indicates exercise may serve as a normalizing effect of interoceptive attention and supports previous literature indicating exercise provides a safe place to experience threatening internal sensations. Research and clinical implications are explored

    Biliary tree of knowledge: Assessing cholecystitis Google searches

    Introduction/Objectives: Cholecystitis is a common form of upper abdominal pain. With its high prevalence and the various non-surgical and surgical treatment options, we believe patients are searching the internet for questions pertinent to cholecystitis. No investigation has ever been completed into cholecystitis Google searches, therefore we sought to classify these questions as well as assess their levels of quality and transparency using Google’s Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).Methods: We searched Google using search terms involving cholecystitis treatment. The FAQs were classified by the Rothwell Classification schema and each source was categorized. Transparency and quality of the sources' information were evaluated with the Journal of the American Medical Association’s (JAMA) Benchmark tool and Brief DISCERN.Results: Our Google search returned 325 unique FAQs after removing duplicates and unrelated FAQs. Most of the questions pertained to surgical treatment (190/325, 58.5%), followed by disease process (79/325, 24.3%), and then non-surgical treatment (56/325, 17.2%). Medical practices accounted for the highest amount of FAQs unable to meet the JAMA benchmark (107/146, 73%). The one-way analysis of variance revealed a significant difference in median quality of Brief DISCERN scores among the 5 source types (H(4) = 49.89, P<0.001) with media outlets (10/30) and medical practices (12/30) scoring the lowest compared to academic sources which scored highest (21/30).Conclusions: Medical practices are the most frequent source Google recommends for FAQs but deliver the lowest quality and transparency. To increase the quality and transparency of online information regarding cholecystitis treatment, online sources should strive to include the date, author, and references for online information
