    Researchers have studied the canine-human bond extensively and found evidence of a multitude of physiological and psychological benefits to both humans and dogs. Due to this research, colleges and universities have implemented canine therapy programs to help students with their day-to-day stress. College students are a population who report high levels of stress and mental health issues. This dissertation provides information on the benefits of an acute canine therapy session on college students using self-report and biological measures. The study is one of the first to use both salivary cortisol and oxytocin levels along with self-perceived stress scores to report the impact of a canine therapy session on undergraduates. Additionally, the stress behaviors of the dogs were observed before and during the session. Students had significantly lower post-session cortisol levels along with lower post-session reported current stress levels. There was not a significant difference in canine stress behaviors before and during the session. Combined the novel aspects of this study provide crucial information that aid in validating the benefits of canine therapy

    Examination of stigmatizing language within medical literature on psychosis

    Background: Conditions of psychosis have been the subject of significant stigma, leading to delayed treatment for individuals experiencing early symptoms of psychosis, for fear of being labeled “crazy” or “psychotic.” Delayed treatment can worsen the prognosis of individuals with psychosis. Proper adherence to person-centered language guidelines can curb the widely-held stigmatized preconceptions about psychotic conditions. The objective of this paper is to determine the rate of adherence to person-centered language (PCL) guidelines among published literature on schizophrenia and other conditions of psychosis.Methods: We began with a systematic search of literature in PubMed discussing schizophrenia or psychosis from 2020-2022. Our analysis included the articles of journals which had published at least 20 articles on the subject. Among search results, we randomly selected 500 articles, of which 241 articles met inclusion criteria. These papers were screened for usage of stigmatized language, and the article type, research focus, and institution type were noted for further analysis.Results: Preliminary results reveal that 54.0% (121/224) of articles screened included stigmatized language, such as labels or emotional phrases. The most common stigmatized phrase identified was “schizophrenia patient,” found in 35.7% of papers. “Schizophrenic [patient/subject/etc]” was found in 12.5% of papers. The type of intervention was the only variable which was found significant for PCL guidelines adherence, with 55.4% (103/186) of “no treatment (purely observational)” articles including stigmatized language, compared to 32.7% (18/55) of all other types. Type of article, research, funding, and institution were not found significant for PCL adherence. These preliminary results do not include papers which are inaccessible, and awaiting ILL.Conclusion: The majority of medical articles screened did not adhere to PCL guidelines. Usage of stigmatized language in literature reinforces the use of these labels in medical education, in doctor’s offices, and in popular culture. Given the impact of stigma on treatment delay -and the poor prognosis that may result- proper care should be taken to enforce person-centered language in medical literature. Reducing the fear of labeling is a necessary step in encouraging treatment for people experiencing early symptoms of psychosis

    Plausible thermo-dynamic cause of an implausible psicho-dynamic course from the CIA archive

    The STAR GATE archive included an experiment from China of psicho-physical claim reportedly conducted on aqueous object (Wu et al, 1991). Over a time-lapse of approximately 208 seconds, total 7 phases of significant temperature deviation from the baseline temperature of 25 °C may be identified, without an explainable source of thermal generation. Not questioning the genuineness of the experiment, this work analyzes the thermal-energy transfer on the test-object that could have caused the reported temperature changes. A non-adiabatic single-compartment produces first-order low-pass responses between a thermal-input and the object’s temperature. Whereas the input determines the steady-state condition, the thermal dissipation dictates the dynamics. Under the assumption of ONLY first-order responses and adjusting the input parameters including DC and AC magnitudes and time-constant of the single-compartment responses, multi-phase temperature changes resembling the reported patterns could be reconstructed. One rising phase and three falling phases with apparent oscillation were reconstructed by considering the thermal input to contain modulatory patterns of 0.4-0.5 Hz in frequency. Such modeled modulation of the thermal inputs would correspond to a correlation coefficient of 0.95 between the DC and AC magnitudes at a varying AC/DC modulation-depth of  94%.     Extracellular vesicle-mediated protein secretion in filamentous fungi

    Fungi use intracellular and extracellular mechanisms, like organelle maintenance, endomembrane metabolism, and secretion, to adapt and survive in changing environments. Intracellular vesicles transport materials between membranes to support cellular homeostasis and growth, but fungal extracellular vesicles (EVs) have gained recent attention for their specific role in the extracellular environment. This project studies EVs in fungal protein secretion using the model organism, Aspergillus nidulans, focusing on EVs as carriers of extracellular enzymes. It is hypothesized that enzymes are packaged into EVs which are released from the cell by an unknown mechanism. To investigate this, A. nidulans’ EVs were isolated through ultrafiltration and quantified via flow cytometry at various growth points. High vesicle counts were observed between 48 and 72 hours. At 72 hours of growth, EVs were analyzed for quantity and xylanase activity by comparing two strains: A1149 (reference strain) and PFI-XLN7, a xylanase overproducing strain. Xylanase activity was detected in EVs from both strains when grown in xylose or xylan, with PFI-XLN7 showing significantly higher EV counts and xylanase activity. To track xylanase secretion, the A. nidulans reference strain was transformed to insert mCherry into the xylanase (xlnC) locus, creating strain XynMC11. When grown in xylose, mCherry was detected in isolated EVs, but not when grown in glucose, indicating regulated EV-mediated xylanase secretion. Fluorescence microscopy of XynMC11 in xylose showed vesicle-like structures containing mCherry outside the cells after 72 hours of growth. mCherry was also found within biofilms, indicating that EVs deposit cargo into biofilms. Furthermore, a strain lacking the native xlnC signal peptide (SP) produced fewer EVs, showing the role of SPs and the endoplasmic reticulum in EV cargo loading. Overexpressing mCherry in place of XlnC (strain XlnR7MC7) in A. nidulans led to growth and biofilm defects, but increased EV production compared to XynmC11, though mCherry-containing EVs was about 26% of the total for both strains, showing regulated EV production. Overall, this work highlights a regulated pathway of enzyme secretion via EVs in A. nidulans, providing evidence that EVs originate from the ER and contribute to biofilm composition

    What is it like to be a female pilot in the United States Air Force: A gender diversity study

    This research investigates the gender-based disparities faced by female pilots in the United States Air Force (USAF), providing a comprehensive analysis of their experiences compared to their male counterparts. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach quantitative and qualitative data explored the perceptions of treatment in areas such as policies, bias, representation, mentorship, and career advancement. The research highlights the industry statistic of female pilots, who make up only 6% of the pilot community, and examines systemic challenges, including gender bias, work-life balance issues, and career progression barriers. Through surveys and open-ended, the study revealed that female pilots often perceive greater obstacles related to gender-based stereotypes and informal biases, which impact recruitment, diversity, retention, and operational effectiveness. The findings underscore the complex dynamics of working in a predominantly male profession, where females face additional stressors, including harassment, balancing family life with military demands, and a lack of senior female role models. The results provide actionable insights for addressing gender disparities in USAF aviation, offering recommendations for policy changes, mentorship programs, and recruitment initiatives aimed at improving the retention and treatment of female pilots. By fostering a more inclusive environment, the USAF can enhance both operational readiness and diversity within its pilot corps. This study also contributes to the broader literature on gender diversity in aviation, with implications for commercial and collegiate aviation sectors. Ultimately, it advocates for systemic reforms that ensure equitable opportunities for female pilots, supporting the USAF’s mission to create a more diverse and effective force
