Empowering women to counteract religious terrorism
Does empowering women reduce the risk of religious terrorism? I propose three primary arguments. Firstly, I contend that women's political empowerment can play a role in decreasing the appeal of terrorist groups by addressing the underlying factors driving individuals towards extremism. Secondly, I argue economic empowerment of women which could reduce their vulnerability to being coerced into unpaid labor for such groups, thus undermining their organizational capacity. Lastly, I posit that women’s social empowerment can aid in developing alternatives narratives to extremist ideologies. To empirically assess these arguments, I employ negative binomial regression analysis on a country-year dataset spanning 172 countries from 1970 to 2016. I use the V-Dem dataset to assess measures relevant to women's political, economic, and social empowerment. I find that a notable decrease in the number of terrorist attacks and fatalities attributed to religious terrorism when women are economically empowered. I conclude by discussing the policy implications for counteracting terrorist activity through gender-focused economic empowerment programs

Immune responses to influenza D virus in calves previously infected with bovine viral diarrhea virus 2
Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) induces immunosuppression and thymus depletion in calves. This study explores the impact of prior BVDV-2 exposure on the subsequent immune response to influenza D virus (IDV). Twenty 3-week-old calves were divided into four groups. Calves in G1 and G3 were mock-treated on day 0, while calves in G2 and G4 received BVDV. Calves in G1 (mock) and G2 (BVDV) were necropsied on day 13 post-infection. IDV was inoculated on day 21 in G3 calves (mock + IDV) and G4 (BVDV + IDV) and necropsy was conducted on day 42. Pre-exposed BVDV calves exhibited prolonged and increased IDV shedding in nasal secretions. An approximate 50% reduction in the thymus was observed in acutely infected BVDV calves (G2) compared to controls (G1). On day 42, thymus depletion was observed in two calves in G4, while three had normal weight. BVDV-2-exposed calves had impaired CD8 T cell proliferation after IDV recall stimulation, and the α/β T cell impairment was particularly evident in those with persistent thymic atrophy. Conversely, no difference in antibody levels against IDV was noted. BVDV-induced thymus depletion varied from transient to persistent. Persistent thymus atrophy was correlated with weaker T cell proliferation, suggesting correlation between persistent thymus atrophy and impaired T cell immune response to subsequent infections.Veterinary PathobiologyDean of Veterinary Medicin
Rust Belt realignment in the U.S. House of Representatives
The Rust Belt is a region of the United States consisting of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Wisconsin (Wallenfeldt 2024). These states are referred to as such because, historically, the region was the primary home to manufacturing facilities in the U.S. However, after the economic transition from manufacturing to a service-based economy, the machinery was left to “rust” (Wallenfeldt 2024). Interestingly, this region was considered a Democratic stronghold (Davis and Chinni 2018). Not anymore. Where once most U.S. House districts in the region were held by Democrats, there appears to have been a transition to the Republican Party. Why is this the case?In this study, I aim to explain the transition in the Rust Belt from the Democratic Party to the GOP in U.S. House districts. I do this by examining the partisan winner of congressional elections in 1992 and 2020. I define a Rust Belt district as having a predominantly white working-class population. Specifically, I define the white working class as eligible white voters without a bachelor's degree. I expect to find that Rust Belt districts differ from non-Rust Belt districts in that they realigned from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party (H1)

Evaluation of nitrogen management strategies and comparison of cool-season perennial forage systems
Chapter I: Nitrogen management plays a crucial role in optimizing winter wheat production in the Southern Great Plains. This study evaluates the economic performance of two nitrogen management systems: the conventional farmer practice (CS) and the nitrogen-rich strip system (NRS). Using the DSSAT-CERES-Wheat model, integrated with a radiative transfer model and a nitrogen fertilization optimization algorithm, the study simulated wheat yields and economic outcomes under each system over multiple growing seasons. The CS system applies nitrogen either pre-plant or in split applications at a fixed rate, while the NRS system dynamically adjusts mid-season nitrogen rates based on real-time crop data. Although CS yields are marginally higher, the NRS reduces nitrogen use by an average of 127 kg/ha, saving 19 ha⁻¹.
Chapter II: Nitrogen (N) carryover is an important factor influencing the efficiency and economics of nitrogen management in winter wheat production systems. This study evaluates the economic value of managing nitrogen carryover across three cropping systems in the Southern Great Plains: wheat-fallow, wheat-soybean, and wheat-sorghum. Using the DSSAT crop growth model, the study simulated crop growth, yield, and nitrogen dynamics over 30 years. The analysis incorporates a dynamic programming approach to determine economically optimal nitrogen application rates that maximize the net present value of returns. Managing nitrogen carryover reduced nitrogen application rates by up to 114 lb/ac annually in the WSG system, with savings ranging between 43/ac annually across systems.
Chapter III: Winter wheat is an important forage for livestock in the Southern Great Plains. However, rising input costs and changing climate conditions have prompted the search for alternative feed sources. This 5-year grazing and economic study compared winter wheat with two varieties of summer-dormant tall fescue under different management practices, including nitrogen fertilizer application and interseeding with alfalfa. The research, conducted over five years in Oklahoma, found that although winter wheat produced higher livestock weight gains and revenue, the tall fescue systems had significantly lower costs. As a result, the net returns from the perennial systems were similar to those from winter wheat, suggesting that these perennials could be a viable, cost-effective alternative for producers looking to reduce livestock feed expenses while maintaining profitability

Investigation of effective bleed strategies for standing column wells using experimental transfer functions
Standing column wells are an efficient type of ground heat exchanger that continuously recirculates groundwater in an uncased borehole. To increase heat exchange during peak load periods, a process called "bleed" is used. This process creates groundwater discharges that must be managed in accordance with local regulations and may incur additional costs, for example, if directed to injection wells. Alternatively, inter-well reinjection can be used to reroute the discharged water to other standing column wells. This study presents experimental results of a standing column well system operated during 35 days under four different reinjection modes. A full recirculation mode, basic mode, is compared to two levels of bleed and to the proposed inter-well reinjection mode. The experimental data were used with a robust deconvolution algorithm to extract a transfer function for each mode. These functions represent the thermal response of the system to a unit excitation, allowing for comparison of reinjection modes under the same heat load. Analysis of these transfer functions showed that, at the specific experimental site studied, the inter-well reinjection can be as efficient as a bleed operation. Thus, inter-well reinjection can successfully extend system use during peak load periods, while decreasing groundwater discharge to injection wells
