Final report: 2024 Cowboy Racing Baja Senior Design Team
The objective of the 2024 Cowboy Racing Baja Senior Design Project is to design and manufacture a front suspension system for the 2023-2024 Cowboy Racing Mini Baja Car. The objectives of the designed front suspension are to maximize the strength to weight ratio, minimize unsprung weight, and obtain suitable geometry for off road vehicles. Redesigning the front suspension to these objectives will increase the handling and performance of the Baja Car
Schooling in crisis situations: Learning experiences from the Joplin tornado and the COVID-19 pandemic
This qualitative case study examined the disaster practices and experiences of school personnel in Joplin, Missouri, who worked during two disasters: the devastating Joplin tornado in 2011 and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. This case study is unique in examining the effects of multiple disasters on schools and school personnel in one area, and their responses. The study explored personnel experiences, considered how their tornado-related experiences informed their preparedness for and response to the pandemic, and identified lessons they learned from their experiences with both crises to improve school preparedness. I emailed 31 school personnel and received a 54.8 percent response rate, from which I conducted interviews with 15 school personnel (teachers, counselors, and administrators) who worked during both disasters. The study analyzed themes through the Community Capitals Framework theory for community disaster recovery to provide insights that could benefit other schools in recovery.
Findings revealed that school personnel played critical roles in the recovery process by leveraging multiple capitals in nuanced and overlapping ways, emphasizing the school’s pivotal role in Joplin’s disaster recovery. Key themes illuminating these capitals were: the school personnel’s diverse roles, varying experiences of support, managing donations, and some participants believed a culture of “entitlement” and “financial dependency” on the school. Other central themes were ensuring student health, safety, and well-being, restoring a sense of normalcy, and learning “as they went,” training and preparedness. Participants leveraged community capitals which aided in the school and broader community’s recovery. This study also reveals the personal cost of school personnel’s crisis roles, especially teachers and administrators. Teachers faced significant stress and exhaustion from pressures to “return to normal” quickly after the tornado and stringent health and safety protocols during the pandemic.
This unique qualitative case study highlights educators’ roles in community development following crises and underscores the need for comprehensive approaches to mental health of the school community in post-disaster recovery. It also identifies a gap in understanding how different levels of school personnel approached managing multiple crises and leverage past experiences to enhance future preparedness
New insights into reptilian coccidan infections from two species of invasive geckos, the Mediterranean house gecko, Hemidactylus turcicus and the tropical house gecko, H. mabouia from the new world
Classification of coccidia at the generic and family levels was traditionally based on the life cycle, and the number of sporocysts and sporozoites in the exogenous stages (oocysts). The genus Eimeria reported from all vertebrate classes was defined by tetrasporocystic, dizoic exogenous oocysts. However, recent molecular and developmental studies on eimeriid coccidia, support multiple linages of coccidia with tetrasporocystic, dizoic oocysts. Two of these lineages, Choleoeimeria and Acroeimeria, found in reptiles contain a suture on the sporocyst and epicytoplasmic development in the gall bladder or intestine and are considered phylogenetically distant from the genus Eimeria which infect birds and mammals and contain stiedal bodies on the sporocyst. However, there are several species of Eimeria-like coccidia from reptiles, which excyst via the suture in the sporocyst wall but contain intracytoplasmic development. These taxa do not fit the definition of Eimeria nor the definition of the genera Choleoeimeria or Acroeimeria. However, no sequence data is available for these Eimeria-like coccidian. It is unclear if they represent a currently undescribed Eimeria-like genus or should be included in Choleoeimeria or Acroeimeria. To address this issue, I examined the coccidia of two species of introduced house geckos (Hemidactylus turcicus and H. mabouia) from North America, and documented their oocyst morphology, endogenous development and obtained partial 18s rRNA sequences. My phylogenetic analyses of all available 18s rRNA sequences of Eimeria-like coccidia species from New and Old-World lizard species indicated 3 clades, that differed in site of infection (gall bladder or intestine) and development (epicytoplasmic or intracytoplasmic). My analysis strongly suggests that a third Eimeria-like genus of coccidia infects lizard hosts. This work indicates that oocyst morphology is not useful in differentiating between these genera and obtaining oocyst morphology, endogenous development, and sequence data in future Eimeria-like species descriptions will be critical in our understanding of their taxonomical position and phylogenetic relationships. Additionally, my partial sequence of the 18s rRNA gene for Isospora hemidactylus obtained during this study and resulting phylogenetic analysis supports previous phylogenetic studies that Isospora species from lizards are not a monophyletic group, and suggests a paraphyletic origin of Isospora species infecting lizard hosts
Crude oil price: Influences in an era of increasing unconventional oil production in the United States
The discovery and rapid development of unconventional oil resources in the United States during the first quarter of the twenty-first century has increased the global supply of crude oil and significantly influenced global oil prices. This research defines the United States’ unconventional oil production as the most important influence on global oil prices from January 2006 to the present, with two to five times the relative importance compared to the United States conventional, Saudi Arabian, other OPEC, OPEC+, and the rest of world oil production.
Global consumption (demand) and 71% of global production influence on global oil price are mediated through inventory balance variance. Both global demand and the mediating variable, inventory balance variance, are relatively more important influences on global oil prices than the production variables.
The variations of the dollar to international currency exchange rates measured by the U.S. Federal Reserve’s Broad Dollar Index are demonstrated to have a more important influence on the real price of crude oil than any of the supply, demand, and inventory balance variance variables, and this research quantifies these relationships. The broad dollar index and related monetary policies are shown to be the dominant variables influencing the real price of crude oil globally, not supply and demand variables.
A new model for supply and demand, including U.S. unconventional, OPEC excluding Saudi Arabia, and the rest of the world oil production, and demand mediated through inventory balance variance and Saudi Arabian production, OPEC+ production, and the broad dollar index directly to the real price of Brent crude oil in the next month is developed. Analyses of the model paths are defined, and the model’s validity is supported using statistical and predictive analytical methods
Conspiracy theories as a value game
Many conspiracy theorists use conspiracy theories in order to justify harmful and false beliefs. Others use conspiracy theories as reasons to not trust others, especially experts. Yet, conspiracy theories are a unique form of false belief. Conspiracy theories seem to be self-insulated and are completely immune to counter-evidence, unlike other more mainstream scientific theories. Conspiracy theorists also seem to trust a completely separate set of experts than mainstream science. Building off of C. Thi Nguyen’s analysis of the gamification of Twitter, I aim to show that conspiracy theories gamify values in a similar way that Twitter does. Conspiracy theories switch values that experts care about (i.e., falsifiability, evidential support, etc.) with values that resonate with the experience of the conspiracy theorist (i.e., subjective clarity, safety, etc.) and notes this as “truth”. This connection of an explanation to some non-epistemic value helps self-insulate conspiracy theories by disguising claims about certain non-truth-related values as claims about truth. These gamified values also manipulate trust within the conspiracy theory by allowing for “experts” who share the same values of “truth” that the conspiracy theorist cares about. This is due to the fact that we naturally seem to trust those who share deeper values with us

Associations among food parenting, parent nutrition knowledge, and child eating behavior: A survey of anti-diet parents
Background: Parents can impact their children’s eating behaviors and body perceptions through their food parenting practices. The Division of Responsibility in Feeding is one approach to food parenting in which parents determine what, when, and where to feed their child. Children decide whether and how much to eat of the foods offered. The purpose of this study was to test associations among parents' use of the Division of Responsibility in Feeding, parent nutrition knowledge, and their children's enjoyment of food and food acceptance. We investigated these associations within a sample of parents who engage with anti-diet parenting content on social media. The “anti-diet” movement was developed in response to the negative effects that “diet culture” has had on eating behavior in the United States.I hypothesized that the Division of Responsibility in feeding would be positively associated with parents’ nutrition knowledge. I also hypothesized that children of parents who report higher adherence to the Division of Responsibility in Feeding would have greater enjoyment of food and greater food acceptance.Methods: A sample of 151 parents were recruited from the @Anti.Diet.Kids private Facebook group page and Instagram account. The Division of Responsibility in Feeding was measured using a validated 12-item survey, the sDOR.2-6yTM (Lohse & Mitchell, 2021). Parents nutrition knowledge was assessed through self-reported Nutrition Facts label use, macronutrient knowledge, and perceived nutrition knowledge. Children’s enjoyment of food (4 items) and food acceptance (i.e. food fussiness; 7 items) were measured using the subscales from the validated Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire (Carnell & Wardle, 2007). We conducted Pearson correlations to test our hypotheses. This study received IRB approval on February 16, 2024 (IRB-24-61).Results: Our results showed a 79% adherence to the Satter Division of Responsibility in Feeding in our full sample (mean = 26.2, SD = 3.5, out of 36) and of those who identified as anti-diet parents (n = 136), there was a 78% adherence. There was a positive correlation between adherence to the sDOR and child’s enjoyment of food (r = .24, p = .003) and child’s food acceptance (r = .23, p = .004). The association between adherence to sDOR and parents’ nutrition knowledge was not statistically significant.Conclusion: The anti-diet movement and adherence to Division of Responsibility in feeding can support positive child eating behavior. Findings are relevant to initiatives that aim to prevent the development of disordered eating. The results also showed a need for basic nutrition education so that parents could have a better understanding of their child’s macronutrient needs
