Load aggregation for thermal interactions between boreholes
A load aggregation method is proposed for efficient simulations with multiple boreholes using network-based simulation methods. The method splits fast and slow dynamics. Fast dynamics, i.e. the impact of boreholes on themselves, are solved every timestep using available load aggregation methods. Slow dynamics, i.e. heat interactions between heat sources, are solved at a lower frequency by introducing a time delay in the update of their calculation. A first order correction term is proposed to estimate the variation of temperatures in-between updates. The error caused by the delayed update depends on the distance between the boreholes and the frequency of updates: more distanced boreholes can use a lower frequency of updates to achieve acceptable accuracy. A 20 yr hourly simulation of two interacting bore fields showed that a maximum error of 0.003 °C on the inlet fluid temperatures can be obtained while decreasing the calculation time from 275 s to 26.2 s

Hope in special education: A qualitative case study
The purpose of this qualitative case study is to explore what factors produce retention of special education teachers remaining in the profession for three or more years using Snyder’s Hope Theory as the theoretical lens. The participants of this study consisted of special educators currently employed in schools receiving Title I funding, who have three or more years of special education teaching experience and are assigned to the CORE program at Bayside School District. CORE is a centralized program assigned to students who require frequent and intensive behavioral and emotional support. The study parameters were selected to address the purpose of the study under the most challenging environments possible. This study collected data from surveys, interviews, observations, and artifacts. The data analysis revealed a strong link between hope and teachers' decisions to stay in their jobs. Educators with sustained hope displayed resilience across four key themes, demonstrating Hope Theory in action. Access to resources—such as administrative and peer support, instructional materials, curricula, and professional development—was deemed essential. Inadequate resources led to limited pathways and reduced agency, decreasing hope and increasing apathy. Teachers who stayed employed Hope Theory to confront challenges, setting meaningful and achievable goals to maintain motivation. These goals were vital for sustaining hope and aligning with their intrinsic motivations. Additionally, dedication to students with special needs heavily influenced retention decisions, reinforcing their belief in their work's long-term impact. This study adds to the understanding of special education teacher retention and offers implications for research, theory, and practice. It concludes by addressing research questions and proposing future research recommendations
Evaluation of NutraGen®, an immunomodulatory feed additive, in calves subjected to a combination viral and bacterial bovine respiratory disease challenge
Two 89-d experiments evaluated the effects of an immunomodulatory feed additive (NutraGen®; NG) on calf health parameters following a bovine respiratory disease (BRD) challenge as well as the efficacy of a bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) procedure as a means of confirming and quantifying an experimental Mannheimia haemolytica (MH) challenge in calves. Steers [Experiment 1 (n = 16, initial BW = 271 ± 33.0 kg)] and [Experiment 2 (n = 16, initial BW = 232 ± 33.2 kg)] were blocked by genetic background and randomly allocated to 1 of 3 experimental treatments. Treatments included a placebo (CON; n = 5), NG fed from d -18 to d 28 (PREC; n = 6), and a placebo fed from d -18 to d -3 followed by NG fed from d -3 to d 28 (CHLG; n = 5). Data were analyzed using the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS Version 9.4 (SAS Institute, Cary, N.C.). The feeding of NG impacted respiration rate (RR; P ≤ 0.05), increased serum glucose (GLU) and lactate (L) production (P < 0.01), increased leukocyte (LEU) concentrations (P < 0.0001), decreased neutrophil (NEU) and increased lymphocyte (LYM) concentrations (P ≤ 0.05), altered serum MH antibody production (P = 0.06), and altered serum IL-10 concentrations (P ≤ 0.07). No active pre-challenge MH growth was observed in any of the enrolled animals. The analysis of post-challenge BAL fluid sample sets on d 6 of each experiment confirmed a minimum active MH growth of 1.67E+01 cfu/mL in 37% of inoculated steers. No statistical difference was observed between steers that did or did not have detectable MH growth post-MH challenge or rectal temperature, clinical score, or serum MH antibody titers. Overall, these experiments suggest that NG has the potential to alter certain clinical and cellular responses in calves exposed to a BRD pathogen challenge. While the collection of BAL samples may hold value as a clinical diagnostic tool, it is not recommended that BAL procedures be used to quantify bacterial overgrowth or infection in the lung of steers exposed to pathogens of the BRD complex in a research or experimental setting
Impacts of prenatal stress microbiome signature on immune and welfare status of progeny
The fetal development of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, also known as the stress axis, has been shown to have a lasting impact on the pathways between the brain and gut, ultimately influencing behavioral responses to stressors later in life. Early exposure to maternal stress during gestation greatly influences the development of the HPA axis and microbiome. While there have been advances in understanding how maternal microbiota are transferred to the fetus, there are still several gaps. Specifically, one question is to determine if the transfer of maternal microbiota influences microbial diversity and the development of physiological responses in the offspring postnatally. Therefore, it is vital to understand the differential effects of chronic maternal stress, the period at which stress occurs on fetal development and microbial establishment, and the potential effect on progeny biological maturation. Sows were fed 70 mg of hydrocortisone acetate twice daily for 21 days during early, middle, or late gestation. Control sows were given a placebo during these same stages of gestation. Fecal samples were collected at birth from 4 piglets per litter and then weekly from 7 days old to 49 days of age. Fecal DNA was extracted using ZymoBIOMICS DNA Miniprep Kit following the manufacturer’s instructions. Then, samples were sequenced using the Illumina sequencer at Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Data were analyzed using R to determine maternal and offspring groups' alpha and beta diversity and OTU grouping.Generally, pigs born to mid-HCA-treated sows displayed greater sensitivity to weaning stress with a more robust response in microbial phylogenetic diversity and plasma cortisol concentrations. In contrast, pigs born to late-treated sows had a more delayed response to the stressors. Overall, the maternal stress induced by feeding HCA for 21 days had differing impacts on the microbial population phenotypes in the progeny based on the time period of gestation in which HCA was supplemented. Differences across treatment groups were also identified in the immune response of the progeny as well

Warfare and medical workers: A qualitative analysis of the lived experience of female Ukrainian medical workers during the Russian War 2022-2023
The Russian war in Ukraine began February 2022 and has lasted over two years with waves of attacks devastating civilians. Continuous attacks on medical facilities have occurred, impeding access to essential health services for so many. This research study plays a foundational role in understanding the impacts on the lives of medical professionals who are trying to live and work in an evolving, protracted armed urban conflict. As over 83 percent of healthcare workers in Ukraine are women, this study focused solely on female medical workers, their lived experiences, and coping strategies employed while trying to conduct their work during a time of active conflict. The interpretivist, qualitative, inductive study was designed with recommendations for a code of conduct in a disaster-zone, having a clear purpose and respect for local voices. The findings were drawn from content analysis of the qualitative data from participant semi-structured interviews. The data was ultimately classified into 50 codes grouped into 10 categories which informed four overarching themes: health consequences, healthcare operations, social impacts, and survival. The findings provided a foundation for discussion and recommendations related to burnout, medical triage in tactical medicine, use of non-clinical spaces in internal medical operations, animals and the impacts of pet ownership in traumatic experiences, and continued education. Great attention to detail was paid to social impacts and survival methods. This research study is significant because it takes place during an active war, notably a complex emergency and contributes to the fields of women studies, studies for public health and healthcare, as well as studies in complex emergencies

Horizons in unconventional energy: Examples from the Anadarko Basin and Gulf of Mexico
Unconventional energy now accounts for more than the majority of hydrocarbon production in the United States, and leading-edge research is focusing on recovering oil from clay-rich shale formations and CO₂-EOR with associated geologic CO₂ storage. The Goddard Shale (Serpukhovian) contains an exceptionally productive unconventional reservoir that was deposited in the southeastern Anadarko Basin. The Goddard Shale reservoir is highly water-reactive, containing an average of 18% swelling clay minerals. The facies bounding the Goddard Shale reservoir were deposited in nearshore environments. The reservoir is an organic-rich, argillaceous siltstone with porosity of approximately 10% and exceptional permeability of approximately 2.3 µD; it is oil-prone and was deposited farther offshore.
The Gulf of Mexico Basin (GOM) is the one of most prolific hydrocarbon basins in the United States. Waterfloods are becoming mature, and an opportunity exists to apply CO₂-EOR. Even greater potential exists for CO₂ storage in saline formations. The Mars-Ursa Minibasin provides a world class opportunity for offshore CO₂-EOR. The minibasin contains at least 26 producing reservoirs. The main reservoirs consist of turbidites deposited in channel complexes, fans, and levee-overbank systems. The storage P₅₀ resource for the Mars–Ursa minibasin is estimated at 168 Mt for storage associated with CO₂-EOR and 345 Mt for storage in saline formations.
Central GOM reservoir data were analyzed and mapped regionally to characterize CO₂ storage opportunities in saline formations and oil and gas reservoirs. The P₅₀ storage resource in the study area is estimated to be 51.9 Gt in known reservoirs. Of this potential, a storage resource of about 2.6 Gt is in proven oil reservoirs. The greatest potential is in Miocene-Pleistocene sandstone, which were deposited principally in turbidite channel-fan systems in a complex salt-tectonic setting. EOR appears to be the most attractive pathway toward the deployment of CO₂ storage technology in the Central GOM, and saline reservoir development will become increasingly attractive if a large CO₂ supply becomes available
How do social and linguistic experiences affect the social and emotional well-being of young people with hearing loss?
This long-term project collects interviews about the lived experiences of d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing people of all ages, their families, and related professionals. They will be compiled to create a publicly-available audio-video collection of interviews and conversations with all types of people with hearing loss.
The collection will be useful for parents and educators to have first-hand accounts of the possible outcomes of the tough decisions they have to make about deaf children's communication and education.Communication Sciences and Disorder
