    Comfort of a transgendered person with OMT: A case study

    Introduction: The Williams Institute estimates that there are 1.6 million persons aged 13+ in the United States that identify as a transgender individual. Transgender individuals may avoid or delay seeking healthcare services and often do not disclose gender identity due to fear of discrimination.Case: A 20-year-old transgender male with a history of asthma and anemia presented to the Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine clinic with complaints of right-sided, mid-back pain unassociated with any recent injury or trauma. He described this pain as chronic, daily, and a 2 out of 10 on a pain scale. Pain is exacerbated with sitting or lifting objects. Physical exam revealed decreased CRI, OM suture restriction, OA compression, restrictions and paraspinal muscle tension in the cervical and thoracic spine, and a restricted diaphragm. OMT was directed towards the somatic dysfunctions of the diaphragm, thoracic and cervical spine, and cranial structures. A variety of techniques were utilized however the most effective modalities were myofascial release, articulatory techniques, and HVLA.Results: After the third treatment, the patient noted considerable improvement in his symptoms. He reported increased thoracic spine mobility following OMT treatments. The patient reported being comfortable with the providers providing OMT during appointments. He expressed that the OMM clinic was a welcoming healthcare environment where he was able to feel at-ease in discussing his medical history and background.Discussion: Our case study aimed to gain to transgender patients' comfort during OMT appointments. It is possible that this research can be guided to assess a larger scale of transgender patients with their comfort and contribute to closing the disparity gap that currently exists.     Impact of pinto bean and resistant starch supplementation in memory and cognition in a mouse model of estrogen deficiency

    Alzheimer’s disease (AD), which is worse in women than men, causes pathology progression and memory impairment. 70% of those affected by AD in the United States are women. Previous research has shown that the loss of estrogen women experience in menopause could be a trigger for AD and relate to the progression of more severe symptoms in postmenopausal women. Due to this previous research, this study investigates the effects of pinto bean (PB) and resistant starch (RS) supplementation on cognitive function and short and long-term memory in mice with an estrogen deficiency. To investigate this, thirty-two three-month-old female C57BL/6 mice were injected with vinyl cyclohexene dipoxide (VCD) or vehicle (VH) daily for 30 days and randomly assigned to dietary treatment groups for 12 weeks (n=8/group): control (AIM-93M), 10% (wt/wt) PB, and RS (similar fiber content as PB). At the end of 12 weeks of dietary treatment, mice underwent a variety of tests to analyze their cognition, memory, and behavior: Open Field (OF) Maze, Y-Maze, and the Morris Water Maze (MWM). Data were analyzed using linear and linear mixed models with estrogen status (VCD vs. VH) and diet as factors. In the Y-Maze, RS and PB-supplemented mice showed better short-term memory and/or exploration. Whereas, in the MWM, VCD mice indicated having reduced long-term memory characteristics, mainly seen in the RS-VCD mice, contradicting the performances seen in the other mazes. The continuation of this project focuses on understanding how PB and RS alleviate menopause-related cognitive and memory decline.Integrative Biolog

    Zooplankton responses to environmentally relevant microplastic conditions at low food availability

    The global use of plastic has drastically increased over recent years. Aquatic ecosystems are pools for plastic build up that break down into microplastics (<5 mm) (MP). Despite this, there remains a high uncertainty on how these MPs transfer across trophic levels and impact aquatic organisms including zooplankton. Most research to date has used MPs that are not environmentally relevant in terms of type, concentrations, shapes, sizes, etc. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis was to use life table experiments to determine if MPs at environmentally relevant conditions impacted the life history and lifespan of two species of Daphnia, Daphnia magna and Daphnia pulex, at low algal food availability. We focused on commonly used plastic types of polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) at environmentally relevant concentrations of 500, 2500, and 5000 particles/L. Results show that zooplankton exposed to environmentally MPs at low food availability had no significant negative effects on total reproduction, reproductive timing, or total lifespan. Despite long term chronic exposure to environmentally relevant MPs, these findings suggest that the impact on aquatic organisms may not be as apparent as hypothesized from previous experiments that used unrealistic MP conditions. I did find that PP had a significant positive impact on D. magna lifespan under medium and high concentrations, however, additional research is needed to understand this impact. While MPs at environmentally relevant conditions may not have direct negative impacts on zooplankton life history, they still have the potential to impact aquatic ecosystems. These potential impacts include biomagnification in food webs, increase toxicological exposure for zooplankton if metals bind to MPs, and changes in food web interactions. In conclusions, this research helps develop a better understanding on the limitations and understanding we have for MPs research in scientific literature, beyond unrealistic laboratory conditions

    Study of heat transfer characteristics and economic analysis of a closed deep coaxial heat exchanger retrofitted from an abandoned geothermal well

    It is economical to transform abandoned oil/geothermal wells into closed deep geothermal heat exchangers with coaxial tubes. A numerical model of a coaxial geothermal heat exchanger (CGHE) with varying borehole diameters is established according to an abandoned well in northern China. The finite difference method is adopted to solve the temperature distribution, and the accuracy of the model is validated with experimental data. Based on the existing structure of the abandoned well with different depths, the feasibility of its conversion into a deep CGHE is discussed, and this study uses the orthogonal experimental method to analyze the influence of four main factors and their significance level on the average heat extraction rate, with the heat extraction rate up to 422.18 kW in the optimal combination. This study also integrates with actual project considerations and conducts an economic analysis to determine the most appropriate circulation fluid flow rate. The results highlight the key factors on the heat transfer performance of the CGHE, with the inlet water temperature to the CGHE being the most significant, followed by the configuration of the CGHE retrofitted from the abandoned well. From the economic perspective, given the CGHE in this study is retrofitted from the abandoned oil wells, the flow rate design of 35 m³/h is the optimal choice, ensuring cost-effective system operation while meeting the operational requirements of the deep CGHE

    Balancing the unseen struggle at work: Exploring the intersection of infertility, distress, and insurance

    This work aims to research the overlooked aspect of women in the workforce who are confronting infertility struggles by examining the association of possible increased job insecurity and psychological experiences on the work outcomes of these women. This research explores how structural support, operationalized in this study as supplemental insurance, could potentially highlight the need for further studies. The study utilized participants gathered from the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health (ALSWH) which encompasses over 14,000 women and spans 18 years, beginning with Survey Two conducted in 2000 when participants were between 22 and 27 years old, and ending with Survey Eight in 2018 when they were between 40 and 45 years old. Hypotheses will be tested using clustered data analyses in Mplus 8.7

    Economic feasibility of establishing a watermelon packing cooperative in southwest Oklahoma

    This study evaluates the economic feasibility of establishing a watermelon packing cooperative in southwest Oklahoma, a region with a comparative advantage in expanding watermelon production. The Packing Simulation Model (PACKSIM) and the Cooperative Feasibility Template (CFT) were used to simulate watermelon packing operation costs and revenues and the Cooperative’s financial feasibility, assuming various production scales, loan rates, watermelon market prices, and the Cooperative's patronage distribution strategies. The Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) were used to measure the Cooperative’s profitability and its members’ returns over a 10-year period. Sensitivity analysis was applied to examine the impact of varying factors on the Cooperative investment. The findings suggest that the feasibility of the watermelon packing cooperative is contingent on production scales and watermelon market prices. The profitability of the cooperative and its members’ benefits could be improved with a lower loan rate. Decisions on watermelon purchasing prices paid to farmers impact feasibility, as it proves to be more beneficial to the cooperative and its members when it is low. A shorter equity revolving period could increase returns to members as their returns are not being locked up in the Cooperative in the form of equity for a longer time. Cash patronage to members could be increased when the cooperative has sufficient cash accumulated. In situations where the cooperative is at risk of bankruptcy, reducing the purchasing price for members’ watermelons could help improve the cooperative’s cash flow
