Physical activity in rural vs urban areas in northeast Oklahoma: A study of 5K participation
Introduction/Objectives: Physical activity is one of the most important strategies for preventing and managing diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and osteoporosis as well as reducing all-cause mortality. Still, physical activity remains a health challenge, especially in rural communities. Residents of rural communities have fewer opportunities for physical activity participation, lower odds of meeting physical activity guidelines, and a lower overall health status when compared to their urban counterparts. The development and adaptation of evidence-based interventions for physical activity promotion in rural communities is an essential strategy to address physical activity inequities. The aim of this study was to compare participation in rural vs urban 5K races in northeast Oklahoma to determine possible interventions to increase participation in organized physical activity.Methods: 5K race sites in the general northeast Oklahoma area were chosen at random and the first three finishers (as available) in each age group (male and female) along with their listed hometown were analyzed using GIS. A map was created for each race showing how far each participant traveled to the race.Results: Preliminary results indicate that for rural races, participants travel 36.5% longer to attend, compared to urban races. Participants tend to travel even farther to participate in a rural trail or specialty event (62.8% farther than an urban event).Conclusions: Physical activity and sport participation are a means to both maintain health and prevent future illnesses; however, there are inequities between urban and rural communities in terms of access to and participation in sports and organized physical activity. This preliminary study demonstrates the potential and need for rural communities to enhance physical activity and promote healthy lifestyles. Rural residents are willing to travel to participate in events and it would benefit communities to host more events in rural areas to increase participation in organized physical activity

Healthcare professionals and vaccine hesitancy: Approaches and barriers to discussions with patients
Vaccination remains the best way to protect against severe complications of the flu. However, hesitation towards flu vaccines is rising. This study explores healthcare providers perspectives on flu vaccine hesitancy, approaches to conversations about flu vaccines, and barriers they face when having conversations with flu vaccine hesitant patients. To conduct this research, a survey was sent out to various healthcare professionals asking about their experiences with flu vaccine hesitancy in their practice. 18 healthcare providers completed the survey. The findings showed that common approaches healthcare professionals utilize in their practice to address flu vaccine hesitancy include listening, providing patients with evidence, and respecting patients viewpoints. The findings also suggested that barriers to addressing flu vaccine hesitancy in the healthcare providers practice include limited health literacy, patient’s mind being made up before having a conversation with the provider, and a lack of time to hold conversations and address patient questions and concerns. The findings of this study implicate the need for patient-centered healthcare to improve patient/provider relationships and increase the amount of time providers are allowed to spend with their patients to address any patient questions and concerns about the flu vaccine and improve patient’s knowledge regarding flu vaccines

Improving equine welfare through increasing ability to assess affective states
As awareness of animal welfare grows, formal education on this subject becomes increasingly important. Recognizing emotions in non-human species offers a way to improve animal management and interaction, focusing on minimizing harm and optimizing mental and physical health. Understanding equine affective states is key to assessing their well-being. However, many horse owners overlook the cognitive domain, relying primarily on physiological measures like hoof condition or body condition score to gauge welfare. To address this gap, the RAiSE (Recognizing Affective States in Equine) online educational tool was developed. This research aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of RAiSE in improving the assessment of equine affective states through a mixed-methods approach. Participants completed the RAiSE course and were assessed through pre- and post-survey testing. An online questionnaire administered via Qualtrics evaluated their understanding of equine affective states, revealing significant improvement in accurately assessing negative states. Correct selections of affective states increased from 65% pre-course to 82% post-course. The mean number of correct scores also improved, indicating enhanced recognition of both valence and arousal in equines. Thematic analysis of follow-up interviews revealed that participants valued the course and felt more confident in applying their knowledge to real-world scenarios. Over 75% reported an increased likelihood of using affective states in their equine welfare assessments. Participants found RAiSE to be a valuable educational resource and were highly likely to recommend it to others. The study concludes that reducing negative emotions in equines is crucial for maintaining their welfare, and tools like RAiSE are instrumental in achieving this. Future implications suggest that incorporating educational tools like RAiSE into broader equine management practices could significantly enhance horse welfare. Continued research and development of such programs are essential for advancing effective animal welfare strategies

Norms of products and factors polynomials
We study inequalities connecting a product of uniform norms of polynomials with the norm of their product. Generalizing Gel’fond-Mahler inequality for the unit disk and Kneser-Borwein inequality for the segment [−1,1], we prove an asymptotically sharp inequality for norms of products of algebraic polynomials over an arbitrary compact set in plane. Applying similar techniques, we produce a related inequality for the norm of a single monic factor of a monic polynomial. The best constants in both inequalities are obtained by potential theoretic methods. We also consider applications of the general results to the cases of a disk and a segment.Mathematic
