    Teaching difficult topics: Amplifying student voice in the classroom

    Teachers struggle to integrate culturally and historically responsive learning activities because they fear repercussions related to Oklahoma's sociopolitical climate. This session will focus on the significance of teaching difficult topics to amplify student voices. We will clarify what makes a difficult topic, highlight relevant research-based procedures, and practice how to create a safe space environment through modeling respectful dialogue and active listening throughout the discussion.Teaching, Learning and Educational Science

    Non-contact diffuse reflectance spectroscopy using center-illuminated-area-detection modeled by a simple formulae for assessing myoglobin

    A process of convenience that is highly desirable in diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) is to recover the spectral absorption by direct model-inversion to facilitate decomposition of spectrally significant chromophores. Attaining such convenience that requires a simple forward model has been challenging in non-contact DRS, for assessing myoglobin forms in discoloring meat. This work demonstrates that non-contact DRS configured in a center-illuminated-area-detection (CIAD) geometry [Sun & Piao, 2022] may be modeled by a formula of exceptional simplicity. This simple forward model for DRS in the CIAD geometry on a homogeneous medium has been examined by using Monte Carlo simulations, over a radius of the area of CIAD ranging from 1.5 mm to 10 mm, for the absorption coefficient to vary 5-orders of magnitude over [0.001, 100] 〖mm〗^(-1), and the reduced scattering coefficient to vary 2-orders of magnitude over [0.1, 10] 〖mm〗^(-1) while limited to one scattering phase function. When compared to a previous cumbersome model for the same geometry, the simple model markedly outperforms at high absorption, e.g., >1.0 〖mm〗^(-1). The simplicity of this model facilitates that, with a priori knowledge of the spectral scattering, analytical operation could directly recover the spectral absorption to subsequently use linear inversion to resolve the chromophore proportions. Non-contact DRS in the CIAD geometry of ~4mm in diameter using this simple forward model has been applied to seven longissimus lumborum steaks over 6 days of retail display. The progressive changes of myoglobin, including the decrease of oxymyoglobin and increase of metmyoglobin over 6 days estimated by the simple model of non-contact DRS in CIAD are consistent with those assessed concurrently by a contact DRS using 3mm source-detector-separation [Piao et al, 2022].Electrical and Computer Engineerin

    Migration narratives: Visualizing the Iranian migration experiences

    This thesis explores the rich and multifaceted experiences of Iranian migration through the lens of generative design, aiming to visualize and interpret these narratives in a nuanced manner. Generative design, characterized by its use of algorithms to create dynamic visual representations, serves as the primary methodological tool in this study. It enables the transformation of migration stories into engaging and deeply informative visual formats and facilitates a broader understanding of these experiences. The narrative of Iranian migration is complex, influenced by a confluence of socio-political, cultural, and personal factors. By harnessing the capabilities of generative design, this research translates these intricate stories into graphic visualizations that capture the essence of emotions and memories associated with migration. Projects such as "Synesthesia," "The Migrant Garden," "Typographic Narratives," and "CommUnity" illustrate the application of these methodologies. Each project employs specific generative design techniques to address different aspects of the migration experience—from the emotional and psychological impacts to the communal and social dynamics involved. "Synesthesia" translates audio narratives into visual data, emphasizing the sensory overlap and the emotional depth of migration stories. "The Migrant Garden" uses 3D printing to create tangible representations of individual narratives, allowing for a physical interaction with the stories. "Typographic Narratives" focuses on the power of text and design to vividly convey personal stories, enhancing emotional engagement through typography. Lastly, "CommUnity" utilizes interactive installations to demonstrate the supportive role of communities in the migration process. These projects not only demonstrate the power of generative design in storytelling but also underscore its potential to foster empathy and understanding among audiences. By breaking down complex narratives into accessible and engaging visual formats, this research contributes to a deeper public understanding of the challenges and triumphs of Iranian immigrants. Importantly, this work highlights the role of innovative design approaches, such as generative design, in shaping the discourse on migration and cultural identity, offering new perspectives and insights

    Investigations into the antifungal mechanisms of eumelanin-inspired indoylenepheyleneethynylene and human innate immune cells

    Cryptococcus neoformans is an opportunistic, intracellular fungal pathogen that causes meningitis in >152,000 immunocompromised individuals annually, leading to 112,000 yearly deaths. Innate phagocytes, like macrophages and dendritic cells, are the first line of defense against these invading pathogens. Unfortunately, some subsets of pulmonary macrophages can aid in fungal pathogenesis. When this occurs, we depend on the limited available antifungal therapies approved to treat cryptococcal disease. However, these existing drugs are not highly effective against Cryptococcus, and antifungal drug resistance is an increasing problem. This work investigates the use of an eumelanin-inspired molecule as a new novel antifungal drug, as well as examining the role of proteins, genes, and metabolism to understand the antifungal mechanisms used by innate pulmonary APCs to kill C. neoformans. Our main goal is to develop new therapy approaches for treating cryptococcosis and cryptococcal meningitis. We hypothesized that the eumelanin-inspired indoylenepheyleneethynylene (EIPE-1) can be used to kill Cryptococcus. Results showed that EIPE-1 has fungicidal effects on seven cryptococcal strains with MICs ranging from 1.56 to 3.125 μg/mL depending on the strain, and it is non-toxic to mammalian cells. Furthermore, EIPE-1 affects several processes involved stress response, ergosterol biosynthesis, capsule biosynthesis, and cell wall attachment and remodeling. Next, we hypothesized that the upregulation of HLA-DR, MARCO, and FABP4, along with a reduction in mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, are involved in a protective immune response in human pulmonary phagocytes. Results also showed that RNA transcript levels may not correlate with the amount of protein produced. Additionally, it identified approximately 50% reduction in mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, and glycolytic capacity of AM cells after incubation with C. neoformans, suggesting oxidative phosphorylation may be unnecessary in its ability to kill the fungus. At this time, the mechanism of action of both EIPE-1 and the human innate immune cells is largely unknown. Future studies will continue to explore EIPE-1 and AM cells to understand the exact mechanisms behind their ability to kill C. neoforman

    Brand activism, the role of moral grandstanding

    Big brands and companies understand the increasing importance of social issues, and people want to see their favorite brands care about and take a stand on social issues (Schumann, Hathcote, & West, 1991)However, when brands are active in the socio-political domain, their underlying motivations are increasingly examined by consumers (Holt, 2002). Signaling morality and one’s moral status may not always be received well by others, it could lead to Moral Grandstanding Perception which is using public moral discourse to achieve social status(Cramwinckel, van den Bos, & van Dijk, 2015; Tosi & Warmke, 2016). This research, using experimental method, proposes that when brand advocates for a social or political issue, they run the risk of engaging in moral grandstanding (MG) which can help explain the relationship between consumers’ adverse reactions to brand activism by showing that consumers perceive a brand’s moral stance not as sincere support but as a gesture for showing off

    Using theory to understand factors affecting readiness and learning needs of Oklahoma Extension Educators to implement Policy, System, and Environmental strategies

    Policy, Systems, and Environmental (PSE) strategies have emerged as complimentary approaches to individual based strategies. PSE approaches are community-placed strategies aiming to create environments that facilitate healthy choices. Specific to obesity prevention they include healthy eating and physical activity behaviors. These efforts are often planned and implemented through collaborative efforts with agencies, such as Cooperative Extension and community partners. Results from a previous study confirmed Extension Educators’ acknowledge obesity as a health concern in their communities. Factors influencing their use of PSE approaches to address obesity reflect constructs of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB): Perceived Control, Attitudes and Beliefs, Networking (social norms). To design an effective program to enhance the use of PSE approaches within Extension, level of knowledge as well as the readiness to learn should be examined. The purpose of the mixed-method study was to assess the readiness level of Extension Educators as well as identify constructs affecting use of PSE strategies. A 20-question online survey was administered in Fall 2022 to Oklahoma Cooperative Extension 4-H and FCS Educators. Educators were recruited in Spring 2023 to participate in a follow-up structured telephone interview to further inform survey findings. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the survey responses and deductive content analysis, using themes identified from the survey, was used to analyze qualitative data. Findings reflect Oklahoma 4-H and FCS Educators are in different stages of change to implement PSE strategies, with 87% of 4-H and 27% of FCS Educators being in the pre-contemplation stage or, according to the Diffusion of Innovation Theory, characterized as late adopters. Survey responses suggest limited PSE knowledge, emphasis on direct education, limited time and resources and perceived support influence integration of PSE approaches to plans of work. Training efforts for Educators in precontemplation stages should focus on TPB constructs of attitudes and beliefs and social norms by increasing awareness of PSE strategies, how PSE and direct education are complimentary, and promoting systemic support from leadership, peers and community partners for integrating PSE into plans of work. Training efforts for Educators at contemplation and preparation stages will be efficacious by focusing on perceived control, including building skills for authentically engaging with communities, conducting community engaged needs assessments, action planning, implementation and evaluation
