    Hip strengthening to treat ITBS

    Introduction: Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) is a condition where friction of the iliotibial band against the lateral condyle of the knee causes pain. Traditional treatment is considered a combination of myofascial foam rolling and stretching.Methods: The literature was searched for best evidence determined by the CEBM levels of evidence scale. Two authors ran inclusion and exclusion criteria through databases to find suitable studies. PubMed, Science Direct, and Trip were searched for studies the investigated the effect of hip strengthening on ITBS compared to stretching.Results: Fifty-one relevant studies were found from the search and two randomized control trials and a systematic review met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The two randomized control trials met the purpose of the topic and were included in the critically appraised topic.Conclusion: There is moderate evidence that supports the use of hip strengthening in the treatment of ITBS. Based on the current research, there is evidence that suggests it is the most effective to use a combination of traditional stretching and myofascial techniques such as massage and foam rolling with the addition of hip strengthening exercises

    Investigation of acoustic waves under subsurface conditions to improve the predictions of rock mechanical properties and natural fracture characteristics

    Mechanical properties and natural fracture characteristics are critical to investigate for subsurface engineering applications, including carbon storage, well drilling, and stimulation, as they govern rock stability, fluid flow, and mechanical behavior under stress. This dissertation integrates experimental and machine learning approaches to enhance the prediction and understanding of these properties by analyzing acoustic wave behavior under varied subsurface conditions. First, the influence of temperature, pore pressure, and supercritical CO₂ (scCO₂) saturation on poroelastic properties is examined using Gray Berea sandstone samples. The results show that temperature and pore pressure significantly affect the bulk modulus and Biot’s coefficient, while scCO2 saturation impacts rock compressibility, informing strategies for effective geological carbon storage. The study extends this understanding by experimentally evaluating the impact of reservoir depletion on the dynamic mechanical properties of the emerging Caney shale in South Oklahoma with the employment of unsupervised machine learning to predict static mechanical properties across the Caney shale. Integrating petrophysical data and chemostratigraphy, the workflow—featuring K-means clustering, principal component analysis (PCA), and inverse distance weighting (IDW)—improves stratigraphic characterization and the estimation of static-to-dynamic modulus ratios, which is vital for optimizing drilling and stimulation strategies. Finally, the work explores how natural fracture characteristics in shale influence acoustic waveforms and shear wave splitting (SWS) analysis. Experimental data on fractured samples under different stress and temperature conditions, combined with machine learning models such as K-nearest neighbors (KNN) and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), reveal key fracture properties impacting SWS and wave propagation. Together, these studies provide a comprehensive framework for linking acoustic wave behavior with rock properties, advancing the methods for monitoring and predicting geomechanical changes. The insights offered valuable implications for safer, more efficient CO2 injection, hydrocarbon extraction, and subsurface management

    Preparing extension professionals for success in urban settings: An exploration of the competencies, training needs, and perspectives of the urban extension workforce

    The United States continues to experience rapid urbanization and demographic changes leading to diverse urban communities representing more than 80% of the nation’s population. This has led to an increasing urban influence in the United States and to conversation among Cooperative Extension professionals regarding what its engagement in urban settings should look like, and how it will prepare its workforce to serve the unique needs of urban settings. This study aimed to identify urban Extension educators' competencies and training needs to understand the challenges they face and inform personnel development efforts. The study followed a three-study format, each addressing different research questions. Study 1 used a modified Delphi technique to gather insights from Extension administrators on the challenges and essential competencies for urban Extension. Study 2 employed the Borich needs assessment model to identify competency gaps and training needs among urban Extension professionals. Study 3 involved semi-structured interviews to explore the perspectives of urban Extension professionals. This research contributes to understanding urban Extension's future challenges and the training needs of urban Extension professionals. It offers new insights into effective personnel development strategies for urban Extension personnel and emphasizes the importance of adaptability, communication, and community engagement for urban Extension professionals. The findings underscore the importance of preparing Extension professionals for urban contexts by developing training specifically targeted to the needs of those serving urban clientele and emphasizing non-technical skills and process-oriented leadership approaches such as adaptive leadership. The study confirms much of what is known in the literature regarding the issues of importance for Extension in urban settings and provides new information and actionable recommendations for Extension systems as they recruit, train, and support a high-performing urban workforce

    On the enhanced multipole method and its term-by-term convergence to the classical multipole method in the limit of vanishing thermal inertia

    Thermal inertia of the grout and of the ground located close to the borehole play an important role in the thermal response of geothermal boreholes to rapidly varying heating and cooling needs in buildings. The classical multipole method, developed by Bennet, Claesson, and Hellström in the 1980s, does not consider that thermal inertia, which is why the enhanced multipole method was recently proposed by the authors. The present work gives an overview of the fundamental ideas behind the enhanced multipole method, of its term-by-term convergence to the classical multipole method in the limit of vanishing thermal inertia, and of its performance in a numerical example

    Expected number of real zeros for random orthogonal polynomials

    We study the expected number of real zeros for random linear combinations of orthogonal polynomials. It is well known that Kac polynomials, spanned by monomials with i.i.d. Gaussian coefficients, have only (2/π + o(1))logn expected real zeros in terms of the degree n. If the basis is given by the orthonormal polynomials associated with a compactly supported Borel measure on the real line, or associated with a Freud weight defined on the whole real line, then random linear combinations have expected real zeros. We prove that the same asymptotic relation holds for all random orthogonal polynomials on the real line associated with a large class of weights, and give local results on the expected number of real zeros. We also show that the counting measures of properly scaled zeros of these random polynomials converge weakly to either the Ullman distribution or the arcsine distribution.Mathematic

    Assessment of emotional intelligence in medical, physician assistant, and athletic training students

    Introduction/Objectives: Research suggests that a key piece of any successful patient-provider interaction is emotional intelligence (EI), or the awareness of one’s emotions and the ability to manage them competently. It has been suggested that EI is declining amongst healthcare professionals. This study sought to evaluate the differences in overall EI among medical (MS), athletic training (AT), and physician assistant (PA) students in their first- and second-year of training, with additional emphasis on gender identity and race/ethnicity.Methods: EI questionnaires were collected via the Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale (EIS). Two one-way ANOVAs were conducted to determine mean differences in EI and academic program and year in school. Kruskal Wallis tests were conducted to evaluate EI and gender identity and race/ethnicity.Results: No significant differences were observed in mean EI in degree program (MS, AT, and PA) or year in school (first and second). However, significant differences were observed in males, scoring higher than females, and across racial/ethnic subgroups.Conclusions: This study demonstrates EI differences in men and women that do not agree with previous literature, worthy of further exploration. Differences in EI among various racial/ethnic groups suggests that EI is related to cultural factors. EI implementation in curricula should be culturally competent in order to maximize effectiveness and improve future patient care

    Change in teen dating violence prevalence and associated demographic characteristics before and after COVID-19 lockdowns

    Introduction/Objectives: Increased rates of intimate partner violence (IPV) were a devastating side-effect of COVID-19 lockdowns. Despite this well-documented increase in rates of IPV against adults, there has been minimal research exploring potential changes in rates of teen dating violence (TDV) across the pandemic. While research has suggested that TDV occurs in different contexts from IPV-facing adults, the aftereffects of TDV are similarly problematic and they can result in long-term mental and physical health issues. Members of various minority groups are at particular risk for IPV due to higher rates of victimization and perpetration. Further, some of these groups have been disproportionally impacted by the pandemic which may lead to additional increased risk. As such, an intersectional lens is necessary to adequately investigate pandemic-related changes in TDV rates. To parse these potential relations, we will examine rates of TDV before and after the start of the 2020 pandemic, across a diverse nationally-representative population.Methods: The current study utilized data from the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey (YRBSS), a nationally representative survey of health risk behaviors experienced by students in grades 9-12 in the United States. For the current study, data concerning demographics and teen dating violence from the 2019 and 2021 YRBSS were used to analyze the prevalence of physical and sexual TDV pre- and post-Covid-19 pandemic. Weighted prevalence and 95% CIs of outcomes were calculated for each year by demographics and sex of sexual contacts. Pairwise t-tests were used to identify demographic differences among outcomes. Across years, change in prevalence of outcomes was assessed by using absolute and relative measures of association overall and by demographics.Results: We found that teen dating rates significantly decreased from 64.32% to 55.69%. While physical TDV increased slightly (8.23% to 8.54%), we found that sexual TDV significantly increased from 8.20% to 9.72%. In particular, sexual victimization among girls significantly increased from 12.61% to 15.32%. Whereas sexual victimization of teen boys increased but not significantly, from 3.81% to 4.05%. Sexual TDV rates shifted by race with rates decreasing for American Indian/Alaskan Native, Asian, Black, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander teens and increasing for Hispanic/Latino, White, and Non-Hispanic Mixed-Race teens. Additionally, sexual TDV rates decreased for students who never had sex and whose sexual contacts were same-sex only and increased for students whose sexual contacts were opposite sex only and both sexes.Conclusions: The findings indicate a notable decrease in teen dating, coupled with a significant rise in sexual TDV, especially among female adolescents. The data suggest that the pandemic's impact on teen behavior and interactions has been complex, with varying effects across different racial and ethnic groups. Although, these results are cross-sectional in nature and cannot imply a causative relationship between TDV rates and the COVID-19 pandemic. These results highlight the importance of continuous monitoring of TDV trends, especially in the context of global crises, to better protect and support vulnerable youth populations
