    Exploring systemic supports and the special education teacher shortage in a Midwestern state: A case study

    Research has shown that schools across the Nation are continuing to face the challenge of a special education teacher shortage. The purpose of this qualitative case study is to explore how the systemic factors of Bronfenbrenner’s (1979) Ecological Systems Theory explain selected special educator’s decisions to stay in the profession in a Midwestern state school district. Research questions were developed through the special education lens of Miller et. al., (1999) who incorporated historical factors along with Bronfenbrenner’s microsystem, mesosystem, and exosystem. Teachers will explain the presence or absence of systemic supports that support them in their profession through this lens. This study can potentially add to the current body of research on special education and attrition by exploring why special educators stay in the profession. This qualitative case study collected data using interviews and classroom observations of nine special education teachers across the school district. The findings from this study indicate that the microsystem and mesosystem factors influenced the teachers’ decisions to stay in the special education teaching profession. As related to the microsystem factors of teacher workload, paperwork, caseload, meetings, student needs and student behaviors; teacher workload was the most significant obstacle among the nine participants. The findings from this study also have implications for research, theory, and practice for state, district and campus leaders that will be discussed in this case study

    Fault hunting: Potentially increased seismic risk in southwestern Oklahoma

    The Wichita Mountains are composed of several intrusive rock units that are Cambrian in age (~532-530 Ma) and are proposed to have formed in a failed continental rift zone (Ham et al., 1964). The majority of the rock units in the Wichitas are granitic plutons which have been dated to the early- to mid-Cambrian period (Wall et al., 2020). Overlying these basement units is the Permian Post Oak formation which preserves evidence of Pennsylvanian mountain building. Mapped faults in the region include the Meers Fault, a known seismogenic feature which has considerable seismicity as recently as 1,200 years bp (Chase et al., 2022. Recent investigation of high-resolution digital elevation models (DEM) has led to the tentative identification of additional structural features in the area. This study aims to utilize field structural mapping and outcrop characterization to confirm the existence of these features and determine their potential contribution to seismicity in southwestern Oklahoma.Purdie Research Scholars ProgramGeolog

    Factors influencing fawn survival and adult female vigilance in a declining population of pronghorn

    The pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) is a big game species in Oklahoma and a conservation success story across the American West. However, pronghorn in western Oklahoma are at the edge of the species range and are suspected to be in decline, potentially due to low fawn recruitment. To evaluate potential demographic drivers of the Oklahoma pronghorn population, we captured and GPS collared 125 adult females across 2 winters. In each subsequent spring (May–June), we monitored collared females using clustering software and visual observation to identify parturition events. We captured neonates <5 days old and fitted them with expandable VHF collars to quantify survival and assess cause of mortality. We captured 70 fawns and used known-fate models to quantify survival to 15 days using biological (i.e., sex, mass, birth timing, linear trend in time) and environmental (e.g., temperature, precipitation) covariates. We used female home ranges before and after parturition to collect environmental covariates of each female linked to a captured fawn. The most-supported model for fawn survival indicated survival was negatively associated with mass, positively associated with birth timing at peak parturition, and varied over time. Our data indicated that fawn survival was low, potentially limiting population growth. The leading cause of fawn mortality was predation, primarily by coyotes (Canis latrans). Moreover, land conversion and habitat fragmentation may lead to a shift in how pronghorn use the landscape and generate changes in individual behaviors, including predator avoidance. We observed 46 collared females, recorded the proportion of time each spent vigilant over 1 hour, and documented group behavior and composition. We collected cropland data layers to quantify the proportion of cropland at each behavioral observation. We analyzed these data with generalized linear mixed models to quantify individual behavior (i.e., vigilant, foraging) and group compositional effects on vigilance behavior in relation to cropland. We found cropland had no influence on individual or group vigilance, smaller groups had increased vigilance, and vigilance was higher during the post-parturition period. Our results identify factors influencing pronghorn populations and behavior and can inform harvest and population management of pronghorn in the Oklahoma Panhandle

    The purpose of this study is to examine how discrimination toward LGBTQ+ college students occurring in healthcare settings impacts help-seeking behaviors and attitudes toward psychological and physical healthcare, treatment and medication adherence, and mental health outcomes in college students. Currently, there is a lack of research on how discriminatory experiences in healthcare impact an LGBTQ+ individuals' help-seeking behaviors and attitudes. This study will examine the behaviors and attitudes towards both psychological and physical healthcare. This study hopes to provide a framework for continued research in this context. Additionally, this study hopes to continue to explore relationships between discrimination in healthcare and treatment, medication adherence, and medical mistrust

    Assessing productivity of secondary mathematics' discussions and activities

    Students’ discussions about and engagement with mathematics largely shape their conceptualizations and dispositions towards learning and doing mathematics. It is crucial for educators, particularly at the secondary level, to facilitate discussions and activities that not only engage students, but support their development of productive reasoning. The purpose of the proposed research is to create a theoretical framework “assessing productivity” of discussions and activities based on related literature and empirical research. This framework will be used to analyze various aspects of students’ participation in classroom instruction, such as the students’ mathematical thinking and the prior knowledge required to meaningfully engage in the lesson. The goal of the research is to discern how to promote students’ understanding at a deeper level than memorizing facts and becoming fluent with procedures. I intend to apply this framework to analyze previously recorded data collected by my research mentor of a pre-service mathematics educator’s instruction in a secondary classroom. After the initial teaching videos were recorded, the participant went through a series of interviews where she noted moments of high quality instruction and room for improvement within her lessons that were recorded. The participant’s personal assessment and reflection of her own teaching will then be compared with my analysis of the discussions and activities that were productive in the lessons. I expect the analytical framework I propose to develop to be suitable for application at a large scale level when evaluating the effectiveness of instructional practices and/or curricular resources for secondary mathematics.Mathematic
