    Sounding the alarm: The role of siren frequencies in emergency response safety

    All over the country, first responders risk their own safety in order to protect and serve our communities. One of the most dangerous times for EMS, fire, and police forces responding to 911 calls is when they are behind the wheel, on the road en route to their destination. In order to safely clear intersections when emergency response is necessary, first responders operating vehicles with lights and sirens are taught to vary the frequencies of their sirens as they approach, enter, and clear the area. The purpose of this is to better catch the attention of civilians in their vehicles and on the streets who may have become unaware of the approaching units due to the monotonous sound pattern of the siren. The hope is that switching between frequencies at the approach of an intersection, then again as the vehicle enters the intersection, will startle those around to allow for more awareness of the first responders crossing their paths. This study seeks to find if this method is effective in its purpose of eliciting startle responses, and furthermore to find which sound patterns have the greatest effect. In order to put this question to the test, our study utilizes a behavioral chamber to observe the startle responses of seven wild-type mice subjects, along with one prairie vole as a control. The animals were placed into a behavior chamber, one at a time, and subjected to an array of different startles recorded from an ambulance siren. These files included three sound patterns, each played at different decibels with startle lengths of both 20 and 100ms. From there, the resulting startle responses were recorded as quantitative data and graphed in order to display the varying effects of each sound pattern and frequency on the reaction of the animals

    Student perspectives of New Zealand and Australia study abroad course

    Study abroad courses provide students a deeper understanding of the world around them and the changes happening in the industries they are a part of. This research investigates the perspectives of students and alumni of Oklahoma State University who attended the New Zealand and Australia study abroad courses. Using Q Methodology, participants sorted visual images taken while on the study abroad trip based on their individual experience. Two factors were determined, the Social Butterflies and the Not So Traditional Tourists. The Social Butterflies deeply appreciate social activities and traditional tourist attractions. The Not So Traditional Tourists preferred New Zealand and Australia's non-traditional landmarks and views, finding their own iconic landscapes. These participants preferred traditional food over common foods. Both factors shared less appreciation for classroom-based learning and did not have strong feelings toward crop agriculture

    Role of technology for student engagement in secondary classrooms: A case study

    The purpose of this study was to explore through the Engagement Theory Framework, the role that technology played for student engagement in secondary classrooms. Merriam and Tisdell’s (2016) case study methodology guided the research design. The epistemological perspective used to interpret the selected teacher participants’ experiences using technology in their classrooms was constructivism. Purposeful criterion-based selection (Merriam & Tisdell, 2016) was used to purposively select eight high school teachers. Data were collected from the eight teacher participants through interviews, observations, as well as the district website. Data were collected and analyzed, interpreted, and coded using the open-source coding system (Merriam & Tisdell, 2016). Engagement Theory is a conceptual framework for technology-based learning and teaching. With an emphasis on meaningful learning through collaborative, worthwhile tasks and real-world projects, this theory focuses on three components, Relate, Create, Donate. This study helps explain the role that technology played in teacher classrooms as they used it to engage students in learning in a variety of methods, including collaboration and authentic projects. The findings from this study indicate an understanding of the challenges teachers face incorporating technology to teach students, as well as the many benefits and value that was found using technology to engage students in learning

    Integrative design studio: Within the wall

    This semester, the Integrative Studio thrust us into the Design of an “Integrated” Arts Facility. The project team consisted of two Architecture students and one Architectural Engineering student. The three of us collaborated to decipher the critical points of the brief and the clients and users to understand how our design agenda could fit within those constraints. This process revealed an interest in the Arts as an inherently rebellious entity that achieves success by questioning the status quo. The project evolved the title “Within the Wall,” illustrating the importance of materiality to the identity of OSU and continuing to evolve behind that materiality to meet future needs. We evaluated Sustainable Design buzzwords such as Solar Optimization, Passive Cooling, High-Performance envelopes, On-Site Power Generation, Permeable Paving, and Xeriscaping for their potential to lower the total building Energy Use Index (EUI). This analysis revealed that Solar Power was ideal for generating energy on the site given the climatic conditions, permeable paving techniques could fit into the campus aesthetic, and Xeriscaping is a solution to limit reliance on excess water resources. High-performance building design contrasted a post-modern, deconstructivist approach to the authenticity of OSU brick. Brick has historically been a structural material of necessity. In the modern era, brick is a finish material that harkens back to a specific architectural age. The project sought to expose the lack of utility of a brick wall by delaminating the brick from the rest of the building envelope. The result was an iconic exoskeleton of Oklahoma State architecture that housed a performance-driven design complete with roof pitches optimized for solar, daylighting design emphasis, and simplified site development

    Investigation of reduced density low-GWP refrigerants in existing compressor technologies

    The rise in global temperatures has led to international mandates to begin a phase-out to refrigerants that have a low-GWP. However, these newer refrigerants have a loss in thermodynamic efficiency, meaning that components such as the compressor will have to improve to overcome this loss in efficiency. While there are several losses compressors experience during operation, greater leakage areas are one of the largest contributors to compressor performance. The lower the operating pressures are inside the compressor, the greater the leakage will be. This work presents results from an 80-ton hot gas bypass load stand used to test a scroll compressor designed for R-410A- a high pressure refrigerant- and a spool compressor designed for R-134a, a medium pressure fluid. Several medium and low pressure refrigerants including R-1234yf, R-1234ze(E), R-444A, and R-456A were tested in each compressor, and the performance was measured. Results show that performance metrics such as the specific power, specific mass flow rate, and the COP are dependent on the working fluid, while the isentropic and volumetric efficiencies are driven by the compressor used. The refrigerants tested in the scroll compressor showed losses in efficiencies of approximately 10% from R-410A, while the spool compressor had minimal losses in efficiency, and in some cases slightly higher isentropic efficiencies. R-410A had the highest COPs, while R-444A experienced significant losses in the overall compressor performance

    Effect of habitat fragmentation on plant species richness of the McPherson Preserve, Stillwater, Oklahoma

    ​Habitat fragmentation, driven by human development and land use conversion, is a significant threat to biodiversity. In Oklahoma, extensive road networks dissect the 12 Level III ecoregions found in the state, exemplifying the challenge. The Tallgrass Prairie Preserve (TGPP) in Osage County, crucial for preserving the threatened North American tallgrass prairie, is a large contiguous area that is home to 763 plant species. In contrast, the OSU McPherson Ecology Preserve in Payne County, much smaller and highly fragmented, represents <0.5% of TGPP's area. This study assesses whether McPherson Preserve's small size supports fewer plant species than predicted by its area, using the well-known Species-Area relationship. Of the 200 species predicted by the Species-Area relationship based on TGPP, 224 were observed, suggesting habitat fragmentation does not have an impact on biodiversity. Effective conservation strategies necessitate habitat restoration, invasive species control, pollution management, native plant promotion, public awareness, collaboration, and ongoing monitoring is crucial to maintain McPherson Preserve's unique biodiversity.Lew Wentz FoundationPlant Biology, Ecology, and Evolutio

    Association between ACEs and the prevalence of specific negative childhood behaviors

    Background: Adverse childhood experiences -stressful or traumatic events that occur to children during their development- are frequently associated with adult substance use, injury, violence, and a lower life expectancy, but also have been shown to have an immediate impact on negative behaviors during childhood. Insight into the association between ACEs and the presence of specific negative behaviors within conduct disorder diagnostic criteria has been understudied. Thus, our primary objective was to investigate the association between ACE scores and various negative childhood behaviors.Methods: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of the 2022 National Health Interview Survey for Children. After calculating cumulative ACEs among respondents, which were categorized from 0 ACEs, 1-3 ACEs, and 4+ ACEs, we reported the prevalence of negative behaviors among ACE categories among children 5-17. We then used binary and multivariable logistic regression to measure, via odds ratio (OR) and adjusted odds ratios (AOR), the increased likelihood for individuals with higher ACEs to display negative behaviors.Results: Increasing ACEs was found to be significantly associated with decreased reporting that the child aged 5-17 shares toys/games (P < .001) and is generally well-behaved (P = .015). Increased ACEs was also associated with increased rates of the child losing their temper often (P < .0001), fighting with other children (P < .0001), often lying or cheating (P < .0001), stealing (P < .0001), and having difficulties with emotions (P < .0001). Two traits were found not significantly associated with ACE scores: being considerate of others’ feelings (P = 0.58), and being helpful when someone is hurt, upset, or ill (P = 0.53). Further, our logistic regression found that compared to children with 0 ACEs, individuals with 4+ ACEs were more likely (AOR: 5.75; 95% CI: 3.68-8.98) to be reported as having difficulties with emotions, stealing (AOR: 5.46; 95% CI: 2.69-11.09), and fighting with other children (AOR: 4.96; 95% CI: 2.87-8.56).Conclusion: Insight into how adverse childhood experiences are associated with specific behaviors can provide insight for caregivers and healthcare providers into these behaviors, and how they contribute to the overall behavioral disorder. This understanding can provide points for more specific and personalized intervention strategies. Further insight into how the prevalence of these behaviors develops as the child ages could provide further insight into the ideal timing of intervention strategies
