    Sources of support for legislative term limitations in the states

    In the elections of 1990 and 1992 the voters in 15 states approved initiatives imposing term limits on the state legislatures, by margins ranging from 77 to 52 percent. The purpose of this paper is to explain why the term limit initiatives passed and what factors may have caused variations among the states in the level of support. Among the factors considered are the characteristics of the legislatures and the strictness of the proposed limitations, as well as several aspects of the campaigns: the sources of support from within or outside the state, sources of opposition, the role of media, and differences in opinion and voting patterns of various groups in the state. The most important factor appears to have been how extensive an effort was made by opponents of term limitations

    First observations of Palafoxia callosa in Washita County, Oklahoma

    Palafoxia callosa (Nutt.) Torr. & A. Gray is a critically imperiled plant that has an extremely restricted distribution in Oklahoma with all previous observations recorded from Caddo and Pontotoc Counties. Here we report the first observations of P. callosa in Washita County, Oklahoma. Considering the restricted distribution and limited information available on P. callosa in Oklahoma, additional surveys are needed to assess the population status and current threats to the conservation of this species

    A Floristic Inventory of the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation’s Lexington Wildlife Management Area, Cleveland County, Oklahoma

    This paper reports the results of a vascular plant inventory at the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation’s Lexington Wildlife Management Area in Cleveland County, Oklahoma. Five hundred and six specific and infraspecific taxa in 90 families were collected. Two-hundred and ninety-six genera, 487 species, and 19 infraspecific taxa were identified. The largest families were the Poaceae with 86 taxa and the Asteraceae with 82 taxa. Sixty-eight taxa were non-native to the U.S. (13.4 % of the flora). Four species tracked by the Oklahoma Natural Heritage Inventory were found

    A Bibliographical Analysis of Pragmatic Strategies Responding to the Pandemic Crisis in Aviation

    The aviation industry has suffered from the COVID-19 pandemic since early 2020. Airlines, airports, and manufacturers reacted to fight against the disease to protect passengers as well as remain sustainable. The purpose of this study is to analyze existing archives and discover strategic plans implemented by essential actors of the commercial aviation system. Using inductive qualitative analysis in conjunction with VOSviewer bibliographical data visualization, this study unveils the practical strategies of resilience enacted by the airline industry, manufacturers, and commercial airports during the pandemic time. Based on the Crisis Response Matrix from Suk and Kim, airlines’ survival strategies during COVID-19 include passenger protection, operational retrenchment, innovation, and long-term managerial plans. Manufacturers’ main approaches are expanding business with maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) on top of alternative fuel innovations for emission reduction. Remarkably, airports adopt policies and protocols to screen and protect passengers, share information about infected passengers, and create a contactless airport environment for the prevention and control of pandemic infectious diseases. Synthesis tables containing discoveries are provided for practitioners’ future reference

    Pilot's Guide to Maximum Glide Performance: Optimum Bank Angles in Gliding Turns

    A pilot’s awareness of an airplane’s power-off glide performance is critical for successfully responding to an engine failure in flight. Pilot’s operating handbooks (POH) and airplane flight manuals (AFM) provide the minimum required glide information; however, there is more information that can better equip pilots to extract the maximum glide performance from an airplane. Information about the effect of weight changes on the glide is available but does not seem to be common knowledge among pilots. Information concerning optimum bank angles to use in gliding turns is much less available and seems completely unknown to pilots. This paper provides guidance to pilots for applying weight correction to the best glide speed. It also presents a methodology for determining the optimum bank angle in power-off glides that require a gliding turn to a safe landing location.  The results of the study include the optimum gliding bank angles for airplanes with varying glide ratios (GR) along with rules of thumb for determining the optimum bank angle in flight. The findings of this research can be utilized to supplement 1) the glide performance information used and presented by digital avionics, 2) the glide information contained in POHs and AFMs, and 3) flight training for power-off glides with or without turns to safe landing locations, all with the goal of providing pilots with more tools to land safely at a suitable location in the event of an engine failure

    Pilot Study for Cabin Crew's Willingness to Operate on Single Pilot Operations

    Single pilot operations are already in place within military aircraft, small modes of commercial passenger transportation, and cargo operations. NASA, aircraft manufacturers, and airlines are collaborating on projects that birth safe and efficient single pilot operation suitable technology for commercial airliners. A stipulated number of cabin crew are required per number of passengers on commercial airliners for safety, security, and medical purposes. The purpose of this pilot study was to determine what scales are valid to assess factors that affect a cabin crew’s willingness to operate on single pilot operations. With the selection of appropriate scales, such findings could aid industry regulators, government bodies, and airlines with training programs, educational conferences, and procedural development. The pilot study surveyed members of the cabin crew population using voluntary response sampling. Cabin crew were presented with a survey that collected demographic data, affect ratings, technology acceptance model perceptions, personality traits, and willingness to operate scores. The validity of the scales was tested using Cronbach’s Alpha in SPSS and the usability of the survey instrument was assessed. The affect scale was shown not to be valid. In a follow-on study, the aim will be to use a survey containing the six remaining valid scales and collect demographic data to determine which predictors will be significant in a regression model
