Holding serious juvenile offenders responsible: Implications from differential oppression theory

    Get PDF
A current controversy in criminology is whether juvenile offenders should be treated in a similar manner as adult offenders. This paper examines this issue within the context of the theory of _diffe􀀪ential oppression. Differential oppression theory argues that delinquents and their delinquencies are a consequence of adult perceptions and treatment of children as inferior persons. The remedy for delinquency is to change existing social arrangements to give children the opportunity to be viewed as equally valuable as adults and as autonomous persons. Implicit within the recommendation is that children be held responsible for their wrongful actions. To do otherwise would deny them their humanity and their right to be treated as persons. Treating children as adults for the decisions they make (both good and bad) is being respectful of them as autonomous, moral agents

Elder abuse: Overview of sources, prevalence and intervention initiatives

    Get PDF
This paper is about elder abuse as a social problem from the perspective of its sources, prevalence and intervention initiatives. The true incidence of elder abuse is difficult to determine because elder abuse is known to be very underreported. Literature, however, suggests that elder abuse is widespread and that probably hundreds of thousands of elderly persons are victimized each year. Because the older adult population is increasing in numbers at a rapid pace, there is little doubt that elder abuse will be among the nation's problems. This article discusses trends and prevalence of elder abuse and neglect. A discussion of social reconstruction theory and its effects on the elderly is provided. The empowerment perspective is discussed as the conceptual framework for professionals in their roles as elder abuse advocates and social service providers. Intervention initiatives recommended include: awareness of policies and services, policy evaluation research, caretaker assistance, and advocacy

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact on student academic success and retention while participating in an aviation-themed living learning community on a college campus. The data for this study was drawn from 625 new students (freshman and transfer) who enrolled at the University with an aviation major declared at the start of the 2012 and 2013 fall semesters. The study compared the difference in academic performance and retention between students (N=82) living in the Aviation Living Learning Community (ALLC) against those not living in the ALLC. The study found significant differences between the two groups of students in Fall GPA and academic grade in the Private Pilot ground school, students participating in the ALLC did significantly better than their peers not living in the ALLC. There was no significance found between the two groups in regards to retention at the University, or staying in the aviation program

Gender and Multi-Cultural Curriculum Issues for Undergraduate Aviation Students

    Get PDF
St. Cloud State University aviation students were asked about their perception of completed multicultural, gender and minority (MGM) diversity course requirements and their beliefs concerning current aviation industry workplace practices regarding gender and minority issues. The authors’ goal was to examine how students are being prepared for employment in a diverse aviation work environment. Data were collected through the use of a survey questionnaire distributed amongst undergraduate students (n = 99) about their experiences with MGM coursework. Students were asked demographic related questions regarding age, school year, major area of study, and then were directed to respond to questions which used a Likert-type five point scale. The results were not generalized to the larger post secondary student population as this study is institution and domain specific. The researchers found that respondents surveyed for this study were exposed to the MGM component about non-Western societies. The respondents indicated that qualified candidates should be considered equally for employment regardless of gender and/or ethnicity. Results also indicated that respondents would like the existing work culture to be preserved and they did not believe that the courses prepared them to work in a diverse organizational environment
