Vietnamese America high school dropout rates: Ethnicity as insulation

    Get PDF
This article addresses the question ofwhyVietnamese Americans show much lower high school dropout rates than the American population in general. It looks at two of the major explanations for failure to complete high school: family economic situation and family structure.ltconsiders how the difference in dropout rates between VetnameseAmericans and the two large American racial groups (blacks and whites) may be related to differences in family income and family structure. The findings suggest that the low dropout rates among the VIetnamese do not result from economic or family structure characteristics of individual Vietnamese families. The findinds suggest, instead, support for the position that an immigrant culture, understood as a distinctive pattern of SOCial relations, can insulate young people from disadvantages in American society at large

The prevalence of alcohol. drugs. and violence among youth age 12-21 IS estimated from the youth supplement (Youth Risk Behavior Survey) of the 1992 National Health lnterview Survey. We present national benchmarks on the extent of alcohol. drug . and violence-related behavior among youth . Risk activities among six race/ethnic and gender groups are compared and examined byeducational and employment status . School and work are selected because of their economic signifcance to youth The incidence of risk among youth by race and gender is complex the prevalence of alcohol, drugs, and violence varies by education and employment for the different groups of youth . Nonetheless. we discover that Mexican American men and white men exhibit comparable risk profiles Among women. alcohol use was greater among the employed than those witho ut a Job: college attendance was associated with greater alcohol use among Mexican American women. For blacks. a lower medince of health risks was associated with more favorable educational and employment status . The findings suggest that greater attention be given to differences in health risks by race/ethnicity and gender and to the contributions of education and employment in determming health risks among youth

Combining Merton's Strain Theory with Labeling Theory and moral entrepreneurs*

    Get PDF
*Originally printed in Free Inquiry in Creative Sociology 2010 38(2).Ritzer (197 4) wrote that sociology is a multi-paradigmed discipline where each framework can hold several theoretical explanations. Such declarations are often treated individually, but there are often unexplored confluences between them. Merton's goals-means theory of social strain, for example, is here considered as a labeling one heavily laced with implications about moral authority when applied to studies in deviant behavior. The synthesis of dialogues, illustrated with sociological ideas from modern novels, validates the thesis that social complexities deserve integrated explanations

Fictional reality and the portrayal of justice in modern sociology and contemporary novels*

    Get PDF
*Originally printed in Free Inquiry in Creative Sociology 2006 34(2).Social justice is a popular subject of discussion in sociology, politics, jurisprudence, as well as popular novels. The outcomes of its proceedings are equally curious because that which is "just" depends upon such variables as defining the direction that justice needs to take, allocating authority to enforce it, and public reaction to its consequences. This article represents a layered investigative journey into the portrayal of justice in nine popular series of novels because its fictional enactment represents the way that the population would like to see it enforced, but does not. Since the body of the material reviewed here are works of fiction which incorporate known data a new expression is offered. Fictional reality refers to the ways in which novelists weave fair knowledge about modern justice into stories which please their audiences, and this article explores themeans by which that melding occurs

Bill W. meets the Spanish Armada: Sinners' and saints' retold epiphanies from A.A. to Cursillo

    Get PDF
This article expands our bodies of knowledge about turning points in peoples' lives by drawing upon information from studies of addiction and from the available information about the religious movement called cursillo. A retold epiphany, like a drunk-a-log in Alcoholics Anonymous, represents the recounted conversion story which provides information about a life of abuse or misdirection, the actual turning point or paradigm shift, and evidence which substantiates the reborn person. While retold epiphanies are different from many private and communal disclosures and their environments, all three forms of self-examination are present in the cursillo movement which is directed toward the spiritual re-creation of the participant
