    The Oakland Athletics use of sabermetrics and the rise of big data analytics in business

    The Moneyball phenomenon revealed how Billy Beane, the Oakland Athletics general manager utilized advanced data analytics; Sabermetrics, to statistically analyze the data in baseball which aims to quantify baseball players’ performances based on objective statistical measurements. As technology increases and big data becomes more accessible, sports organizations like the Oakland Athletics are illustrating how businesses, small and large, can use advanced analytics to promote growth. This research paper provides a meta-analysis on the results of large businesses using big data analytic techniques similar to Sabermetrics, to show the improvements in marketing, consumer outreach, revenue, and employee retention while questioning whether smaller businesses can replicate. Unfortunately, the opportunities for most small businesses to take advantage of big data capabilities are limited. Small businesses struggle to afford sophisticated tools to collect data and expert data analysts to exploit the data

    Lying strategies in juveniles during Behavior Analysis Interviews

    Police officers use the Behavior Analysis Interview (BAI) to detect deceit, but it is based on faulty indicators of lying and may be problematic for juveniles due to developmental immaturities. This study compared juveniles’, young adults’, and adults’ reported willingness to engage in truthful and deceitful responses during a hypothetical BAI. Regardless of guilt condition or age, participants were more willing to engage in truthful, suggesting they can manipulate their behaviors to appear innocent. Guilty participants were more willing to use strategies to manipulate their behaviors to appear truthful, while innocent participants said they would behave naturally. Juveniles were somewhat more likely to engage in deceitful responses and they agreed less with stereotypical cues of deception than adults. Juveniles may be worse at differentiating between truthful and deceptive behaviors that police officers observe for, which may put them at risk of being mistakenly judged as guilty in a police interview

    Faculty and staff attitudes toward marijuana use and policy: perceptions of dangerousness and legalization

    Studies have indicated that attitudes toward marijuana use and policy have become less punitive throughout recent years, and the support for marijuana legalization has increased significantly (Green, Doherty, & Ensminger, 2017; Resko et al., 2019). As attitudinal research has been found to affect policy, the current study focused on perceptions toward marijuana use and policy among university faculty and staff to determine whether demographic, experiential, and behavioral variables were significant in their association with marijuana attitudes (Lane, 1997). Findings indicate that age, attendance of religious services, frequency of alcohol consumption, and prior drug use had statistically significant relationships with the two attitudinal scales: alternative marijuana attitudes toward policy and attitudes concerning the dangerousness of marijuana. Further research is recommended to expand on studies focusing on attitudes of faculty and staff, as well as to account for possible differences in attitudes due to varying legalization laws among states

    Examining the effects of exogenous polyunsaturated fatty acids on the antimicrobial activity of piscidins in Vibrio cholerae

    Antimicrobial peptides are found in all organisms and have gained notoriety in recent years for their effectiveness against a variety of pathogens. Piscidins, first isolated from the mast cells of vertebrates, comprise a family of these host defense peptides. Piscidins 1 (P1) and 3 (P3), found in sea bass and other fishes, are isoforms with different modes of action. P1 induces membrane perturbation, while P3 binds DNA to exert antibacterial activity. Each has the ability to bind Cu2+ (P1Cu and P3Cu) which dramatically impacts their antimicrobial characteristics. The purpose of this study was to investigate the activity of metallated and nonmetallated P1 and P3 on Vibrio cholerae, a Gram-negative bacterium of medical importance that normally inhabits an aquatic environment, often associating with fish and other marine life. Known to assimilate exogenous fatty acids into membrane phospholipids, V. cholerae possesses the ability to modify membrane permeability depending upon environmental fatty acid availability. Herein we investigated both permeability and antimicrobial effects of P1, P1Cu, P3, and P3Cu on V. cholerae grown in the presence and absence of linoleic acid (18:2), arachidonic acid (20:4), and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6). Membrane permeability was assessed using a crystal violet assay. These experiments observed a marked decrease (~15%) in permeability when the bacteria is provided each of the fatty acids. All piscidins elicited heightened permeability, with 18:2 decreasing the effect for nonmetallated forms of the peptide. Furthermore, some piscidins displayed concentration dependence with regard to permeability effects. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for P1 were increased 2-fold when any of the fatty acids were available. The MIC of P1Cu increased 2-fold with 20:4 and 4-fold with 22:6. The MIC of P3 decreased 2-fold with 20:4 and 4-fold with 18:2. The MIC of P3Cu increased 2-fold with 20:4. Not only do piscidins alter bacterial membrane permeability and display promising antimicrobial capabilities, but the observed effects of exogenous fatty acid supplementation could also hold potential for targeted treatment of infectious disease

    Diagnosis Disclosure: The Impact of Gender and Stigma

    Existing literature has indicated that there may be a relationship between diagnosis disclosure and gender as it has been asserted that men and women perceive the diagnosis of a mental health disorder differently. Specifically, men report higher levels of perceived stigma when considering a mental health diagnosis and women report a higher likelihood of disclosing a mental health diagnosis to others. The purpose of this current study was to investigate how individuals perceive an illness diagnosis disclosure via an online survey as it was hypothesized that men would be less likely than women to disclose any illness and that all participants would practice selective disclosure. Participants were randomly assigned to read about receiving a diagnosis, which was experimentally manipulated to describe either a mental or physical illness. Results indicated that although there was no significant effect on the intent to disclose their diagnosis, male and female participants responded differently to the type of diagnosis in their concern about the negative impact of the diagnosis and being stigmatized by others

    Liveness analysis, modeling, and simulation of blockchain consensus algorithms\u27 ability to tolerate malicious miners

    The blockchain technology revolution and concomitant use of blockchains in various applications have resulted in many organizations and individuals developing and customizing their own fit-for-purpose consensus algorithms. Because security and performance are principally achieved through the chosen consensus algorithm, the reliability and security of these algorithms must be both assured and tested. This work provides a methodology to assess such algorithms for their security level and performance is required; liveness for permissioned blockchain systems is evaluated. We focus on permissioned blockchains because they retain the structure and benefits afforded by the blockchain concept while end users maintain control over their processes, procedures, and data. Thus, end users benefit from blockchain technology without compromising data security. We expect that this methodology and taxonomy can be applied to other types of blockchains. The developed methodology is used to provide a liveness analysis of byzantine consensus algorithms for permissioned blockchains. We provide a Digital Ledger Technologies (DLTs) consensus algorithm classification to understand the miner-selection process. We compile the ``security ingredients\u27\u27 that enable consensus algorithms to achieve liveness, safety, and byzantine fault tolerance (BFT) in blockchain systems. We organize these requirements as a new taxonomy that describes requirements for security. And, Brewer\u27s theorem is utilized to explain tradeoffs between availability and consistency in consensus algorithm design. This analysis uses formal methods and techniques and is applied to two exemplary consensus algorithms: lightweight mining (LWM) and byzantine fault-tolerant Raft (Tangaroa). Our analysis reveals the liveness of the given consensus algorithm and its ability to protect against malicious miner denial of services (DoS) attacks. Digital signatures are employed to prove integrity and non-repudiation of messages passing in the systems. Queueing theory and Markov chains are applied to determine the average waiting time of client transactions when malicious miners work to slow the system. Queuing theory and Markov chains jointly are employed to test a given blockchain\u27s ability to perform correctly despite the presence of malicious miners or resistant nodes. Overall, the methodology presented here provides a roadmap to guide developers during the design phase of consensus algorithms to render these algorithms more secure and robust
