I/O psychology connections in healthcare and simulation based education - Center for Learning and Innovation
Administrative Intern, Research Assistant The Center for Learning and Innovation Northwell Health 1979 Marcus Ave New Hyde Park, NY 11042 The goal of this poster is to share the experience of a graduate student in I/O Psychology interning in healthcare and researching simulation-based education. Hofstra University’s graduate program in Industrial/Organizational Psychology works closely with Northwell Health’s Center for Learning and Innovation to assist students in completing internship requirements, fostering their unique affiliated professional partnership. Northwell Health is New York’s largest healthcare provider with more than 76,000 employees in 23 hospitals and 830 outpatient facilities.1,2 The Center for Learning and Innovation was developed in 2002 as the organization’s corporate university system to centralize efforts in assessment, teaching and education and systems integration.1,2 The department uses an inter-professional learning model and has over 100-thousand learning hours annually including Paramedics, EMTs, Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Resident Physicians, Attending Physicians, and other healthcare professionals.4 Some administrative responsibilities in this position include supporting the operation of computer-enhanced manikins during simulation trainings, in-situ Crew Resource Management Training (CRM), Simulation-Instructor Education courses and Practical-Skills Assessment Exams. Other responsibilities include conducting regular literature reviews on new research proposals, creating program evaluation tools including surveys and rubrics and leading market research efforts to expand program development. A current project that will be discussed includes the assessment of terminal competencies in paramedics during airway management. This presentation will highlight the development of the rubric, as well as the think-aloud technique used during the assessment. The goal of this research is to analyze the critical decision-making areas of a skill and separate low-level and high-level performance. The application of educational philosophy to assess knowledge/performance will be briefly covered (George Miller’s Pyramid of Assessment and Dreyfus & Dreyfus) in addition to highlighting cross-industry trends of simulation training and education pedagogies from aviation and the military. This unique internship experience provides insight into the versatility and application of IO Psychology in simulation-based education and healthcare
Rape myth acceptance and fear of sexual victimization on college campuses
Numerous studies have identified individual characteristics associated with fear of crime and more specifically, fear of sexual assault. Research often focuses on the relationship between sex and fear of crime with findings consistently demonstrating that women are more fearful of being victimized compared to men (Lane et al., 2009). Scholars have attempted to explain this heightened level of fear by employing numerous theoretical explanations, including the shadow of sexual assault hypothesis. However, few studies have considered how other factors beyond demographic and situational characteristics influence fear of sexual assault. Notably, individual perceptions and beliefs about rape, including rape myths have been under-explored. The current study adds to existing literature by examining the influence of male rape myth acceptance (MRMA) on fear of sexual assault among a college student sample while controlling for individual demographics. Specifically, the current study aimed to explore if/how both individual-level characteristics and MRMA influenced student’s fear sexual assault and/or impacted their behavior. Multivarate analyses revealed higher odds of females feeling unsafe on campus, and fearing sexual assault from both stranger and known offender when compared to males. Higher odds of those who reported a past sexual assault victimization feeling unsafe on campus, and fearing sexual assault from both stranger and known offender. Higher odds of non-whites feeling unsafe on campus, and fearing sexual assault from both stranger and known offender when compared to whites. Higher odds of females and LGBQ students avoiding places on campus out of concern of being victimized
The Relationship Between Color Shade and Emotion Association in Pre-School Aged Children
Color choices can be emotion-driven (Jonauskaite et al., 2019). Because there is evidence that the color shade - emotion association may develop through socialization and enculturation, the current purpose was to determine if color shade was associated with emotion in very young children (i.e., preschoolers) who have experienced lower levels of socialization / enculturation. Participants were read a story about a happy, sad, or angry character and were then asked to pick specific crayons to color a picture of the story character. Inconsistent with the hypotheses, emotion depicted in the story did not correlate with color shade choice (e.g., lighter color shades for the happy character). The results imply that the color-emotion association may be less evident in younger children who have less exposure to those color-emotion associations
Computational fluid dynamics of water vapor/ Zeolite 13X adsorption
This work describes the development of a Finite Element Model (FEM) for use in determining adsorption system performance. The considered interactions are between Zeolite 13X and water vapor for the purposes of engineering adsorbent characteristics and harvester device characteristics. Four objectives are evaluated in the development of a predictive model. First, to understand the implementation of adsorption systems equations and the assumptions that could prevent reliable predictability. Second, to assemble, reduce, and analyze model constants and approximations that express FEM coefficient calculations. Third, to analyze factor sensitivity of model inputs by way of a 2k factorial screening to determine which inputs would benefit from future model development. Fourth, to identify potential avenues of research that would result in novel intellectual property. The main findings of the solver factor screening indicate that micro-dispersion factors and intra-crystalline gas diffusivity are the highest value characteristics in relation to water uptake
UTC industrial-organizational psychology alumni mentoring program: Fostering connections across I-O generations
The UTC I-O Psychology Graduate Program developed an alumni mentoring program to foster connections between current graduate students and alumni. The program, led by a student coordinator, alumni coordinator, and graduate program director, creates a mutually beneficial opportunity for students and alumni. Alumni (mentors) gain skills in coaching and mentoring, expand their network, and gain insights on current trends and research. Students (mentees) gain skills in networking and taking charge of their own development, and gain insights on how to apply evidence-based practices in the field. Successes of the program include building students’ confidence in their ability to translate class projects in interviews and jobs, engaging and connecting alumni across several graduation classes, and at times, providing job and internship opportunities to students. Program effectiveness is evaluated through midpoint, end of program, and post-event surveys, collecting both quantitative and qualitative data from mentors and mentees. As a result, the program has added more group events to foster connections across all participants and provided more resources to better support mentors and mentees in their journey. The success of the program would not be possible without the commitment and passion from our alumni and students, and the collaborative efforts by the coordinators and program director. The information provided will hopefully encourage other I-O graduate programs to implement similar mentoring programs at their own universities
Being annoyingly high in psychological safety: an internship
I began my internship with Talent Metrics after seeing the posting on LinkedIn for a remote Summer consulting research internship. I was immediately intrigued because after submitting my resume I was asked to complete a general I-O knowledge test along with providing a work sample of my writing. While I had samples available from class, they asked for me to generate one related to information they provided, which I thought was a cool way of evening the playing field if an applicant did not have a suitable work sample. After interviewing, I was extended an offer after a conversation of what projects were being worked on, which I also appreciated because it felt as close to a realistic job preview as possible prior to signing an NDA. It was wonderful to see the techniques that I have learned about in class being used, in real time, on me. I completed two major projects with as a Consulting Research Intern with Talent Metrics, along with providing general support for other projects. General support included the formatting of real-world data, contributing opinions and questions to the development of a situational judgement test, and contributing to improvement of the onboarding process for new interns. The two projects I completed were a DEI white paper and the validation report of a survey. The DEI white paper was important to me because it was my first chance at writing for the specific audience that Talent Metrics caters to. I experienced the challenge of the scientist-practitioner gap of translating science into actionable business knowledge. I also completed a validation report of an employee engagement survey. This process included cleaning and running data, as well as writing about the psychometric properties of the survey. One interesting challenge was formatting the document in a way that made sense for clients. At Talent Metrics, I learned how to handle real world data and how to be creative in organizing and approaching data analysis when the data is messy. I also honed my skills in writing scientifically for an audience that may implement and use the science. I felt that I was able to succeed in this internship because Talent Metrics applied the lessons of I-O psychology and created a psychologically safe environment where I could perform and ask questions
The Impact of an Attorney’s Speaking Fluency When Delivering an Opening Statement on Juror Decisions
A wealth of research has focused on factors that impact jurors’ decisions based on the information made available to them in court. However, in no prior research has the impact of how well an attorney delivers an opening statement been isolated to evaluate its direct impact on jurors’ decisions. To explore this issue, students were randomly assigned to read a fluent or disfluent version of an opening statement. The fluency of the attorney’s opening statement did not impact liability ratings or ratings of the likelihood of hiring the defendant. By contrast, the fluency of the attorney’s opening statement significantly influenced how likely participants reported that they would be to hire the attorney and for many of the traits referring to the attorney’s competency
The density of complex zeros of random sums
A random polynomial is a polynomial whose coefficients follow some probability distribution. The fundamental questions that need to be studied are the distribution and correlations between zeros, pairing between zeros and critical points, distribution values, and nodal surfaces. The computation of the average distribution of real zeros of random polynomials was studied by Bloch and Pólya, Littlewood and Offord, Erdős, Kac and others. For standard normally distributed coefficients, the expected density of real zeros is given by Kac’s exact formula. The famous result due to Hammersley asserts that, when the coefficients are complex independent standard normal random variables, the zeros of a random complex polynomial largely tend towards the unit circle as the degree approaches infinity. For complex zeros, the expected density was dealt with by Shepp and Vanderbei for real independent and identically distributed normal coefficients. Their technique exploits the argument principle and Cholesky factorization to reduce the question to the evaluation of a holomorphic function of four correlated normal random variables. Their results were generalized by Ibragimov and Zeitouni to a wide class of distribution of coefficients. Recently, Vanderbei extended the results he obtained with Shepp to random sums with holomorphic functions that are real-valued on the real line as the basis functions. Our interest in this dissertation is to refine the techniques of random fields pioneered by Rice in his treatment of the questions on real zeros to obtain exact formulas for the expected density of the distribution of complex zeros of a family of random sums, such as truncated random trigonometric series and random orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. We further study the level crossings and answer the question about the expected number of complex zeros for coefficients with nonvanishing mean values and distinct variances
Imitation, not theft: a mixed-methods study of plagiarism
This mixed-methods study examines how student writers’ use of others’ work that is labeled plagiaristic may actually represent productive attempts to engage in scholarly discourse through imitation, which has a long history of use in pedagogy. The study’s two research questions were: do points of transition into new composing contexts correlate with higher rates of plagiarism? and: is the education students receive about plagiarism in lower-level composition classes transferable to new composing contexts? The research conducted at Dalton State College includes the analysis of records kept by its Dean of Students Office and interviews with instructors. Findings from this project may inform a more understanding approach to plagiarism reporting and handling grounded in the potential of imitative writing as a pedagogical strategy to help students develop their composition skills. The study offers insights into the prevalence and handling of plagiarism at the college, on both an institutional and instructor level
Retrospective analysis of injuries and persisting injury effects among students who have participated in club sports and intramural activities during the prior year
Research suggests that previous injury and history of sport-related concussion place athletes at a greater risk for subsequent injury. The primary purpose of this study was to assess the validity of self-perceived wellness and performance capabilities survey responses for retrospective classification of the injury risk status of individual athletes as a means to estimate risk magnitude for intramural and club sport athletes. The surveys used to collect this data were the Sport Fitness Index (SFI), Overall Wellness Index (OWI), Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Survey (DASS), and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The SFI was a strong discriminator (AUC= .728) for history of sport-related concussion, with the OWI having lesser discriminatory power (AUC= .618). Association with history of core and lower extremity injury was also strong for SFI (AUC= .704), but weaker for OWI (AUC= .623). The results of this study suggest that self-reported functional status and overall wellness strongly relate to injury history, which may have value for identification of individuals who are most likely to sustain another injury during participation in intramural and club sports
