Delivering on Diversity: An Analysis of Diversity Coursework & Faculty in Graduate Programs
Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) - while always an important topic - has recently gained traction in the industry and in research, notably marked by an increase in DEI research in industrial-organizational (I-O) psychology. There has always been a need for schools to prepare practitioners to foster safe and productive work environments for people of all identities; however, are I-O graduate programs providing enough to meet this need? The goal of this project was to evaluate IO programs’ offerings compared to two other relevant fields, clinical psychology and business administration. We focused on two main criteria: coursework and faculty research, asking: 1) Across fields, how many graduate programs have a dedicated course on DEI? 2) Across fields, how many DEI courses are required in the program curricula? 3) Across fields, how many programs have at least one full-time DEI faculty researcher? 4) Across fields, how many faculty members (core and adjunct) at each program are conducting DEI research? We hypothesized that clinical psychology would have the greatest diversity offerings (e.g., DEI faculty researchers and coursework) between the 3 fields. We collected a random sample of 90 programs, using a random number generator to select 30 IO programs from SIOP’s list, 30 clinical psychology programs from APA list, and 30 business school programs from MBA.com. Our sample consisted of half MA and half PhD programs per field. Two coders reviewed university websites (e.g., program handbooks and curricula) to identify whether programs offered a DEI course and whether or not the course was required. They also examined faculty pages and CVs to determine if there was a full-time faculty member conducting DEI research and coded how many overall faculty were researching DEI. We ran preliminary analyses to answer questions 1 and 3. After conducting Chi-Square tests, we found that there were significantly more IO programs with a full-time faculty member researching DEI than the other programs, 2(2, n = 90) = 10.23, p \u3c .01. However, clinical psychology programs offered significantly more DEI coursework than the other two fields, 2 (2, n = 90) = 19.64, p \u3c .05. While IO may espouse diversity values, our findings point to a missing gap in practice, especially within program curricula — here we can look to clinical psychology as an example. These are significant findings as increased DEI offerings would better train IO students to be mindful of these issues in their future workplaces
Emotion in Motion: Investigating the Relationship between Interpersonal Motor Coordination and Emotional States
The present study investigated the relationship between a person’s emotional state and interpersonal coordination. Researchers primed fifty-one participants to either be angry or happy through a writing prompt. Participants did an arm curl activity while watching a video-taped confederate doing arm curls at a set pace with a congruent or incongruent emotion. The participants were told that this video was a projected live stream. Finally, participants completed measures of post-activity emotions and rapport with and likeability toward the confederate. Our experimental design included an independent samples t-tests to examine the effect of congruency on interpersonal coordination, post-activities, and rapport with the confederate, and one-way ANOVAs to understand the effect of the conditions on interpersonal coordination, post-activity emotions, confederate likeability, and confederate rapport. There was no significant main effect difference of conditions on level of coordination and no significant difference of congruency on coordination. There was a significant effect for condition on sadness and a trending effect on anger and disgust, such that having an angry primed emotion and seeing an angry confederate resulted in higher negative emotions. There was a significant effect of congruency on anger, meaning that those that had incongruent primed emotions to the confederate had increased anger compared to those with congruent emotions. There was no significant difference between conditions or congruency for likeability measures; however, there was a significant difference of condition on rapport ratings, with participants who were primed happy and saw the happy confederate or were primed angry and saw the happy confederate had higher rapport ratings with the confederate compared to any other conditions. Therefore, the results suggest that there is a complex relationship between emotion and interpersonal coordination
Troglofauna of Van Buren and White County: a survey of four caves in the mideastern Cumberland plateau
The Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee has the highest cave-obligate biodiversity in North America. Cave-obligate species are entirely restricted to subterranean habitat and demonstrate unique troglomorphy. These species are categorized as troglobionts. However, because of their isolated occurrences, theses species are vulnerable to a variety of disturbances. This issue is furthered in the fact that only approximately 7% of the caves in this region have been surveyed. Of these caves that have been surveyed, only a small portion were professional entomological surveys, while almost no cave has ever been extensively repeat sampled. This study involved newly sampling one cave and repeat sampling three others. Caves were selected from White and Van Buren County, which respectively hold the highest cave density in the state. Species were predominantly identified to genus and then compared to the results of any or all prior surveys. All in all, 26 novel pieces of data were created regarding known species distributions and extensive numbers of troglobitic genera were found that were not listed in any prior survey
Extensive Huffman-tree-based neural network for the imbalanced dataset and its application in accent recognition
To classify the data-set featured with a large number of heavily imbalanced classes, this thesis proposed an Extensive Huffman-Tree Neural Network (EHTNN), which fabricates multiple component neural network-enabled classifiers (e.g., CNN or SVM) using an extensive Huffman tree. Any given node in EHTNN can have arbitrary number of children. Compared with the Binary Huffman-Tree Neural Network (BHTNN), EHTNN may have smaller tree height, involve fewer component neural networks, and demonstrate more flexibility on handling data imbalance. Using a 16-class exponentially imbalanced audio data-set as the benchmark, the proposed EHTNN was strictly assessed based on the comparisons with alternative methods such as BHTNN and single-layer CNN. The experimental results demonstrated promising results about EHTNN in terms of Gini index, Entropy value, and the accuracy derived from hierarchical multiclass confusion matrix
Assessment of the impact of awareness programs on the transmission dynamics of COVID-19
COVID-19, since its discovery in 2019, has posed a major health problem in the world. It is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and transmitted via infected respiratory droplets and contaminated surfaces. There is an urgent need to understand the transmission characteristics of the virus in response to social interventions. This is important to evaluate the overall impact of such programs in the management of the disease. We seek to develop a mathematical model that characterizes the transmission dynamics of COVID-19. The model analyzes the impact of preventive practices on the spread of SARS-CoV-2 by incorporating human behavior in modeling disease prevalence depending on contact rates for direct and indirect transmissions and infectious host shedding. The model is also applied to reported data from Wuhan and the state of Tennessee. Our results imply that applying strategically created awareness programs to a geological setting can eradicate COVID-19

An analytic hierarchy process and Markov chain based approach for condition rating and dynamic service life prediction of retaining walls
Retaining walls are typically considered auxiliary assets within the global transportation asset management scheme. However, failure cases to this structure class have attracted more attention to retaining wall assets. The possibility of failure also helps validate Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century (MAP-21) requirements that transportation agencies develop asset management plans. Consequently, this thesis represents the development of a framework that combines the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Markov Chain to rate and predict the future condition of retaining walls respectively. Based on the Field Survey of candidate retaining walls, the research uses AHP for hierarchical configuration and pair-wise comparison of retaining wall elements (and sub-elements) – to generate relative weights. This process of relative weighting ultimately lends towards individual wall condition rating scores. This score, together with transition probabilities derived from historical condition data forms the basis of the dynamic service life prediction using the Markov chain

Study of two-way coupled particle laden turbulent flow over a backward-facing step using large-eddy simulation
Large-eddy simulation (LES) is a computationally viable strategy to study particle-laden turbulent flows in practically relevant configurations, although modeling challenges need to be addressed for improved predictive capabilities. In this study, we perform a comprehensive assessment of subgrid-scale (SGS) models for LES by considering a two-way coupled particle-laden turbulent flow over a backward-facing step. We consider dynamic eddy viscosity, wall-adapting local eddy viscosity (WALE), and dynamic one-equation models for the closure of the SGS stress tensor, and the random walk (RW) and the differential filter (DF) based models for the subgrid dispersion. The assessment of subgrid models is carried out by comparison of simulation results against the available experimental data. Based on the assessment studies, the WALE model for the SGS stress tensor and the RW model for the subgrid dispersion are considered to examine the effects of inertia, coupling, and polydispersity on the statistics of carrier and dispersed phases
