    Creating a predictive model of student success in Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist graduate programs

    The following study addressed the identified gaps in the literature with regards to graduate nursing students and the role critical thinking plays in developing a predictive model of student success in graduate nursing programs. The population for this study included individuals who provided application data to an MSN CRNA program between the years 2014 and 2018. The study participant sample included those candidates who were interviewed, offered a position, and started the CRNA program, and those candidates who were interviewed, yet failed to advance past the interview stage. Subsets of the sample population included students who enrolled and successfully completed the CRNA program between the years 2016 and 2020 and students who enrolled and did not complete the program. The quantitative nonexperimental study utilized existing data from admissions materials; self-reported data such as personal demographic attribute variables; and third-party verified data such as undergraduate and graduate grade point averages, GRE scores, HSRT scores, and NCE scores. Findings indicated that critical thinking aptitude, as measured by the HSRT assessment, was a significant predictor of on-time completion. A statistically significant positive association was also found between HSRT scores and students’ NCE exam scores. Results indicated that the development of a statistically significant (p \u3c .01) predictive model comprised of multiple variables was possible. When all other predictor variables were held constant, two independent variables indicated statistically significant (p \u3c .05) predictive relationships with programmatic success, time away from school prior to enrolling in graduate programs (r = -.287, p = .001), and HSRT percentage scores (r = .257, p = .004). The author concludes with implications for practice and recommendations for further research. The author suggests investigation of potential graduate students’ time away from the academic environment and the amount of time spent in the work environment prior to enrollment is warranted given that these two factors were found to be negatively correlated with academic success. As the CRNA profession moves to the DNP programmatic model, the author suggests that additional study is warranted into factors that may serve as valid predictors of student programmatic success

    Racial disparity in educational punishment

    There is a growing epidemic of children of color being disproportionately and inappropriately disciplined due to recommendations for exclusionary educational discipline practices such as suspension and expulsion. Throughout the literature, SES, level of ability, gender, and skin color were essential factors in evaluating students’ suspension risk. The most salient of these factors is race. Implicit bias towards darker-skinned students is the main factor for the discipline gap. This literature review explores the causes and rates that middle school and high school students of color are disproportionately recommended for suspension and expulsion and the consequences of racially discriminatory discipline practices. Exclusionary punishment criminalizes youth and leads to worse life outcomes. Expulsion and suspension lead to higher rates of youth crime in the community, and they are contributing factors to the school-to-prison pipeline. As zero-tolerance policies grow more popular for non-criminal offenses in the school setting, the circumstances around the behaviors leading to mandatory suspension and expulsion are no longer considered. Students’ involvement in the school, positive student-teacher relationships, and students’ individuation are critical protective factors in reducing racial bias in discipline. This literature synthesizes and critically analyzes the body of literature in this field. Recommendations for additional research regarding intersectionality between race and gender need to be funded, zero-tolerance policies need to be abolished and school administrators dedicated to positive student outcomes need to be hired

    A molecular dynamics study on the effect of precipitate on the phase transformation in NiTi

    One of the most important Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) is NiTi (an almost equiatomic alloy of nickel and titanium) which has many applications in different areas like aerospace and biomedical industries. This popularity arises from its Shape Memory Effect (recovering pre-deformed shape when heated) and Superelasticity (reversible elastic behavior caused by phase transformation). It has been shown that the presence of Ni4Ti3 nanoprecipitates can have profound effects on the superelastic hysteresis loop, transformation temperatures and other characteristics of NiTi. In this study, the effect of the Ni4Ti3 precipitate on the stress-induced and temperature-induced phase transformations of NiTi is investigated using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. In the simulations, an Ni4Ti3 precipitate was generated and embedded into the NiTi matrix. The transformation temperatures were computed by applying a cooling-heating cycle. At the austenitic phase, a monotonically increasing uniaxial compressive force was applied to the models with and without precipitate and, as expected, both models exhibited superelastic behavior at a temperature above Af. However, a larger hysteresis occurred for the precipitated model compared to the pristine NiTi due to the hinderance of reverse phase transformation in presence of the precipitate. Furthermore, similar models were made for different directions of the compressive load relative to the crystallographic directions to study the direction dependence of the response. The results show that the precipitate has a pronounced effect on superelastic behavior in 〈100〉 loading directions, while the results for other directions did not show noticeable difference

    Those Who Teach Can Do: Skill Development Through Undergraduate Teaching

    Upon entering the workforce or progressing into a graduate program, undergraduate students are expected to possess a number of both technical and psychological skills, as well as transferable skills, often termed “soft skills” (Appleby, 2003). In addition to coursework, experience through institutional research or undergraduate teaching may provide the necessary opportunities for development of transferable skills. Research presently supports the idea that undergraduate teaching assistants report the acquisition of professional skills through interactions with students and professors (Fingerson & Culley, 2001). These interactions and responsibilities may create similar effects, in terms of professional skill development, to those expected from performing undergraduate research, such as confident communication and leadership (Shalk et al., 2009). Through work as an undergraduate teaching assistant, it is thought that students will develop key knowledge, skills, and characteristics (KSC’s) identified as essential by potential employers through the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Information Network (Appleby, 2019). The aim of the present study is to measure gains in teaching assistants’ perceptions of their transferable skills and professional abilities. The researchers have constructed a survey intended to assess students’ perceived competencies and expectations of competencies following completion of the teaching assistant experience. Over the course of three semesters the researchers have surveyed students enrolled in an undergraduate teaching assistant practicum. Students receive course credit and, in addition to gaining professional experience, engage in reflection intended to encourage self-evaluation and integration of professional abilities and goals. The constructed survey is based on the work of Appleby (2007; 2019) and it measures perceived competency in the following domains: integrity, attention to detail, dependability, initiative, flexibility, persistence, communication, goal setting, analytical thinking, self-control, stress tolerance and cooperation. Individual difference measures were also captured, for example, Need for Cognition (Cacioppo et al., 1984) and Brief Resilience Scale (Smith et al., 2008). The researchers also created additional questions to assess the impact of the global pandemic. We hypothesize that this scale will effectively capture gains in perceptions of transferable skills and professional abilities following a TA practicum course. We also hypothesize that individual differences, such as resilience and need for cognition may be correlated. This survey has potential for use with diverse groups of teaching assistants in various departments and educational institutions

    Improving inter-area oscillations damping of power systems through cooperative active power control of distributed energy resources

    The remarkable growth of power electronics-interfaced renewable generations in the electric power grid has the potential to pronounce the effect of frequency disturbances such as inter-area oscillations. These low-frequency disturbances reduce transmission lines capacity, and at worst even damage the power grid infrastructures. In this paper, we propose a novel control algorithm to eliminate inter-area oscillations modes based on local measurements of frequency and the system\u27s global average frequency. The performance of the proposed solution is investigated on different multi-machine test systems with classic and detailed electromechanical dynamic models through modal analysis and time-domain simulations. The modal analysis results indicate that all the inter-area modes are damped for all test cases. Time-domain simulations also demonstrate that the proposed control not only takes the system to near-zero inter-area oscillations but also improves other power system stability measures such as transient stability and frequency nadir
