    A small stem assay for chestnut blight resistance in hybrid American chestnut trees

    Cryphonectria parasitica (Murr.) Barr is the causal agent for the chestnut blight disease, which was brought to North America in the late 19th century on nursery stock from Japan (Anagnostakis 1987). A pandemic of chestnut blight lasted for the next half century, nearly wiping out all American chestnut trees (Castanea dentata Borkh.). Restoration works to restoring the American chestnut to its native range in North America’s canopy has been going on for the past century. The American Chestnut Foundation has strived to breed a resistant American chestnut by backcross breeding with Chinese species (C. mollissima Blume) since the 1980s. The backcross breeding program has a strict screening method by using phenotyping and progeny testing to predict parental resistance in F1, B1, B2, B3, B4, and F2 generations. In 2022, UTC participated in an alternative small stem assay (ASSA) on less-than-year-old seedlings to measure variation of resistance within and among hybrid progeny of 15 different families at seven generation levels (B2F2, B3F2. B3F3, B4F2, F2, F1, and pseudoB1). All trees that survived to after inoculation were planted in the field. We inoculated around 650 individual seedlings with C. parasitica. Although there were significant differences between canker length in Chinese and American control groups, there were no significant differences between the F1 family and American control groups. The Alternative small stem assay did not prove to be a reliable method of differentiating between intermediate levels of resistance in backcross and hybrid families of Chinese and American crosses, as shown by Dunn’s post hoc test

    Total rewards or totally not what the people want? Examining the preferred total rewards of those at home vs. in the workplace

    With the rapid change to remote work, the present study explored whether differing life circumstances (e.g., an at-home parent vs. an older male) changed reward preferences. The present study adds to the scarce total reward preference research by examining the moderating effect age, gender, and parental status have on the relationship between physical work location and total reward preference. Results indicated age to be a moderator of the relationship between work location and reward preference (benefits, work-life effectiveness, performance management, talent development), but gender and parental status were not significant moderators. Exploratory analyses were performed and found correlations between work location and various total rewards categories (i.e., benefits, work-life effectiveness, performance management, and talent development) and age with work-life effectiveness and performance management. Furthermore, gender and parental status t-tests indicated statistical significances at the item level in that women and parents preferred work-life effectiveness rewards more than men and non-parents

    Estimating Load-Deflection Characteristics for the Shaft Resistance of Piles Using Hyperbolic Strain Softening

    Hyperbolic soil modelling and strain softening have become better understood in recent years; however, their application to modelling load-deflection characteristics for the shaft of both bored and driven piles is in the early stages of development. This paper proposes a method that is based strictly on the strain-softening changes in shear modulus that is experienced to varying degrees around the pile shaft. A dimensionless method is proposed which can be transformed to a physical estimate using simple soil parameters

    Consequences of the environment: timing of litter parturition and offspring survival in the social rodent Octodon degus

    Variation in the timing of offspring parturition determines the environmental factors they experience during early development and their likelihood for survival. I used an 11-year dataset on a natural, free-living population of degus (Octodon degus), a social rodent endemic to Chile, to test predictions that ecological, social, and maternal conditions during the breeding season are associated with the timing of litter parturition and intragroup litter synchrony and that early-life conditions and the time at which pups are born influence their survival. Measures of females’ food access during breeding predicted their parturition day. Furthermore, differences in food abundance and phenotypical masculinization between female groupmates predicted differences in their parturition day. Females that experienced more food during breeding gave birth earlier in the year and female groupmates with similar masculinization and food shared greater differences in their parturition day. No effects of early-life conditions nor parturition day on offspring survival were identified

    Determining the effects of emotion on prospective memory performance

    Prospective memory is the ability to remember to complete future intentions. Throughout the study of prospective memory, the use of emotional stimuli tends to lead to contradictory effects. Some studies suggest that emotional stimuli, particularly positive stimuli, lead to better prospective memory performance. However, emotional stimuli have also been associated with detrimental effects or even no effect on prospective memory. This study aimed to further investigate the potential influence of both positive and negative emotions on prospective memory. College students completed three blocks of an n-back task with positive and negative emotionally valenced images in the prospective memory blocks for the Experimental condition and neutral images in the Control condition. Results revealed that although there were no differences between positive and negative stimuli, the emotional stimuli overall decreased prospective memory performance. Examination of ongoing task data suggests that emotional images may have suppressed the spontaneous retrieval process

    Nissan Motor Corporation: Talent acquisition from a new perspective

    Nissan Motor Corporation is a large, international organization that continues to be a major employer in the Middle Tennessee area, supporting over 11,500 jobs. I secured an internship with the Talent Acquisition team supporting the operations of the team at Nissan\u27s Americas headquarters in Franklin, Tennessee. Although most Nissan internships are filled no later than February, I found and applied to a posting in mid-March. I completed a brief phone screen with the internship recruiter before a larger interview with the Senior Manager of Talent Acquisition and another Recruiting Manager. The original placement was from May 10th through August 13th but has been extended indefinitely. My main responsibilities were to overall support the operations team, offer support for the internship coordinator, and to lead the Pathways Conversion process. In supporting the operation teams, I was responsible for generating content and answering other tasks required by the team. To support the internship program, one of my first initiatives was to create a more engaging and developmental weekly newsletter for interns in the program. I created a new template that prioritized important information while also adding two pages of content focused both on Nissan education and professional development overall. I was also responsible for administering and analyzing periodic surveys throughout the program. I coordinated with the Nissan philanthropic team to plan and volunteer with local nonprofit organizations. I also helped to plan other events throughout the summer including the major Intern Summit where all interns are invited to attend a full day of seminars centered around their development, their growth, and their introduction into Nissan. Finally, I have worked to aid the fall recruitment planning with research on local schools, local career fairs, target audiences, and general planning. I oversaw the Pathways Conversion project where 1377 employees were converted from temporary agency contractors to full-time Nissan employees. Aside from the various planning aspects and overall project management across multiple stakeholders, I directly managed the talent acquisition portion for two larger locations\u27 transition. Through these projects and involvements, I leaned largely how to manage a project of multiple teams with conflicting priorities, directly manage clients and job candidates, and the operation style of an extremely large, global organization. In my extension, I will be working to create more applicant friendly websites and to fully develop the mission statements and values of the internship program to better promote its culture
