    What happened in the past: How experience does not mean squat when it comes to adapting to the changing nature of work

    The magnitude and pace of workplace change mean that individuals also need to adapt and change their approach to solving modern business problems. The fact that analysis, creativity, and adaptability skills are continually listed as some of the most in-demand employee skills indicate that the workforce has not kept up. Instead, people rely on experience and intuition to solve novel problems. This reliance is concerning because neither have ever been listed as in-demand employee attributes and because experience often has a negative relationship with job performance. The session will introduce a decision-making framework and problem-solving approach, which first involves understanding the difference between experience and expertise. Relevant information from research findings, data and analytics, and stakeholder input is then incorporated with this professional expertise to create a more complete problem-solving process, enhance decision-making, and improve results. The session will use an interactive series of activities to illustrate how changing the nature of how people solve problems will help individuals and organizations successfully adapt to the changing nature of work

    Influence of the Virgin Mary in Anglo-Saxon Christianity

    Though it remains unclear when Christianity was first introduced to England, it is certain Christianity was established by the early third century. It was not until the beginning of the seventh century, however, that Christianity flourished in Anglo-Saxon England, bringing with it a new understanding of the feminine role. Once enthralled by the coming of Jesus Christ, worshippers of the Virgin Mary idealized the Mother of God as the realization of the ideals of purity, humility, and passivity. They defined Saint Mary by her sinlessness, valuing her unbreakable virginity as a symbol of unparalleled strength, responsibility, and holiness. Mary herself was viewed by Anglo-Saxon society as the perfect representation of womanhood and motherhood, despite the conviction that she was conceived without sexual intercourse and would give birth as a virgin mother. This depiction of Mary valued the same characteristics among the women of Anglo-Saxon England. This positive representation of Mary, though strengthened by her relationship with Christ, held Anglo-Saxon women to a standard similar to Anglo-Saxon men

    Exploring the effects of fatty acids (PUFAs) on the antimicrobial resistance in Vibrio cholerae

    As antibiotic resistance becomes a major challenge for public health professionals, our research objectives aimed to investigate the potential for polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) to create membrane vulnerability in the gram-negative pathogen Vibrio cholerae to help improve the efficacy of several antibiotics. V. cholerae, normally residing in aquatic environments, is capable of altering its phospholipid composition through the uptake and assimilation of exogenous polyunsaturated fatty acids. The purpose of this study was to measure PUFA-mediated changes in the membrane permeability and antibiotic resistance of Vibrio cholerae. The three physiologically relevant PUFAs used were linoleic acid [18:2], arachidonic acid [20:4], and docosahexaenoic acid [22:6]). Bacterial membrane permeability was measured using a crystal violet assay with each PUFA resulting in at least a 10% change in uptake of the dye. When the cyclic peptides polymyxin B (PMB) and colistin were administered at subinhibitory concentrations, PUFA-specific permeability trends were observed. The availability of PUFAs caused significant changes to the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of PMB, colistin, LL-37, and Cecropin A. Strikingly, PMB and colistin were found to decrease the MIC by at least 4-fold. Not only did 18:2, 20:4, and 22:6 alter bacterial permeability, but they also induced vulnerability to PMB and colistin in V. cholerae, perhaps suggesting synergistic potential in the control and prevention of pathogens. 18:2 did not affect MICs of LL-37 and Cecropin A whereas, the addition of 20:4 and 22:6 increased the MICs by at least 2-fold

The project aims at smart planning of urban development that would have a minimum environmental impact (traditional gray infrastructure minimized with the green infrastructure approach). In this effort, teachers with diverse teaching backgrounds in secondary education participated in urban designs and green infrastructure (GI) research and PBL design training at the University of TN-Chattanooga

    Multistage modeling of fatigue of Ti-6Al-4V fabricated by different additive manufacturing techniques

    Thanks to its high strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance, Ti-6Al-4V has gained a lot of attention in additive manufacturing (AM) of complex parts with aerospace and medical applications. The realistic loading condition in these applications is mostly cyclic. However, the main challenge with AM of this alloy - and in general AM of metallic parts - is fatigue resistance and durability of the part, which has been reported to be much lower than the conventional materials. In this study, fatigue life performance of three additive manufacturing methods was compared using the Multistage Fatigue model (MSF). MSF model predicts the fatigue life of a material by incorporating microstructural features and defects such as grain size, pore size and pores nearest neighbors. The studied AM methods include Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENS), Electron Beam Melting (EBM), and Selective Laser Melting (SLM). Each of these processes uses a different method in constructing the three-dimensional object yielding different microstructure. For this work, microstructural data were collected from previous experimental studies. Scanned Electron Microscopy (SEM) images were used to examine the fracture surfaces of the AM specimens and the defects responsible for fatigue failure. MSF divides fatigue life into three stages of crack incubation, microstructurally small crack and long crack stages. With an emphasis on the microstructurally small crack growth and long crack growth, a comparison was performed after calibrating the parameters for each of the AM processes. The results showed the predicted fatigue life is consistent with experimental results. In addition, fatigue resistance governing parameters which were process dependent, were identified for all AM methods

    How can psychology students can solve top industry issues?

    Abstract Introduction Among one of the most unemployed majors, psychology bachelors degree students tend to find difficulty in finding employment opportunities that match their skills after graduation, despite their mastery of many knowledge, skill, and abilities (KSAOs) (Burning Glass Technologies, 2018; The Ladders, 2019; Halonen & Dunn, 2017). As businesses continue facing critical issues in the workplace, this begs the question: How can students with an undergraduate psychology degree resolve the most pressing issues within the world of business? This study aims to answer this question by understanding how KSAOs gained from a psychology curriculum align with addressing industry problems. Methods The method used to collect our data was a literature review. Researchers reviewed articles regarding current workplace issues and created a summary for each. These summaries outlined the key workplace related issues the article(s) listed. Then, deeper analyses will be conducted into the knowledge of theories and study findings psychology students learn that can address business questions. Additionally, O*Net-validated skills and abilities that psychology graduates possess, such as data analysis, that are valuable in solving problems, will be identified. Expected results Based on our methodology and prior research (Todd et al., 2021), we expect to find that the solutions to the current issues facing the industry are highly correlated with the KSAOs undergraduate psychology students acquire from their major courses. We expect that the knowledge psychology majors acquire from their psychology curriculum, such as knowledge of theories of motivation and models of culture, will be instrumental in addressing workplace problems including but not limited to retention, leadership development, and employee engagement. Implications By understanding how KSAOs obtained in psychology curriculum can be used to address real world problems, psychology majors can feel more prepared entering and contributing to the workplace. Psychology students aware of the KSAOs that they offer become more employable in their field as they are better able to market themselves. Understanding this information is also beneficial for employers. They can understand how to better utilize psychology graduates in the workplace. Finally, this would allow professors in the university setting to better prepare and organize their classes. Enhancing communication about KSAOs, offering better opportunities for application, and expanding professional development so students can advertise their KSAOs for employment

    Exploring the Factor Model of the Work Locus of Control Scale

    In a meta-analysis, Spector (1982) examined the relationship between locus of control and other organizational variables and made suggests for the Rotter 29-item Locus of Control scale to be more domain specific for organizations. Having created these suggestions on how to change Rotter’s scale, Spector (1988) developed a new locus of control scale that was organization/work domain specific and made up of 16-items. Studies have used this scale when looking at work-related locus of control, however, many studies have not fully analyzed the scale and its items. As more studies investigate the scale, more factors are being discovered within the model of work locus of control and how it is not unidimensional (internal-external) as first thought. The aim of this study is to explore the current 3-factor assessment of the Work Locus of Control Scale (WLCS). Currently with three factors, we want to determine if social networks (who do you know) can be a potential new factor to create a 4-factor model. Six new items will be added to this modified scale to test for new factor social networking. Furthermore, the study will compare the best fit model of the WLCS to the Core Self-Evaluations Scale (CSES) to determine if there are any similarities between the factors being measured. Archival data, collected from participants from a different master’s thesis, will be used to assess the scales. The participants completed an online Qualtrics survey via the Prolific Academic platform. The survey had the WLCS and the CSES. For this study, a confirmatory factor analysis will be conducted to assess the factors within the modified Spector’s Work Locus of Control (1988) and including the new items for social networking. With the CSES, a correlation analysis will be conducted with the entirety of the WLCS using the model of best fit based on the confirmatory factor analysis. Overall, we expect that the best fit model for the WLCS will be a 4-factor model, and this model will correlate with the factors in CSES especially the locus of control factor. The implication of the findings would be the further validation of the WLCS and its measuring factors. The study will also explore the role social capital and social analysis plays in work locus of control. The study promotes further research into measurements and scales to better understand what constructs are being measured and how to be used as a practitioner tool

    Selection of Multiteam System Boundary Spanners: An Assessment of Motivation to Communicate between Teams

    Interteam communication is critical to MTS (multiteam system) success and boundary spanners, individuals responsible for communicating across teams, take on much of the responsibility of this task (Mathieu et al., 2001). Individual level of motivation to communicate across teams should predict higher performing boundary spanners who have the ability to drive MTS success. This project seeks to create a scale that will assess individual motivation to communicate across teams through the development of an initial item pool, review by subject matter experts, and sampling of a working population to assess initial descriptive and reliability statistics. An initial item pool of noncognitive items modified from previously validated scale of motivation and communication and generated from the research literature will be sent to a subject matter expert (SMEs), including identified researchers and practitioners with expertise in the management of boundary spanners in multiteam systems. Specifically, 6 items have been adapted from the Work Extrinsic and Intrinsic Motivation Scale (Tremblay et al., 2009) and 5 items have been adapted from the Short Scales for Proactive Personality Scale (Janssen et al., 2017) with other items created based on currently available research. This assessment of motivation to communicate between teams could be used to improve boundary spanner selection outcomes in multiteam systems. Future work could expand on this project by undertaking a large-scale field study to establish criterion-related and construct validity for the proposed scale. (Bandalos, 2018)

    Standards for conducting an iflora: using iNaturalist to conduct a vascular flora of the Charles B Henson Cave Preserve in Dade County, Georgia

    Today’s rate of biodiversity loss in the face of climate change and human disturbance urges scientists to quickly capture as much biodiversity data as possible. Citizen science is a tool with great potential for aiding scientists in the collection of this information. The citizen science platform iNaturalist simultaneously enables mass data collection and establishes a digital database accessible to scientists anywhere, anytime. The standardization of floras has been a focus of botanists, including Palmer (1995), who listed a complete set of the requirements that all botanists are urged to follow to maximize both data point cohesiveness and broader data quality. The focus of this paper is the evaluation of an iNaturalist project’s ability to meet Palmer’s standards and the preliminary collection of biodiversity data of the Charles B. Henson Cave Preserve in Dade County, Georgia. The goals of this study were to: (1) assess the ability of an iNaturalist project to meet Palmer’s standards for conducting a flora, (2) conduct a digital flora of the Charles B. Henson Cave Preserve, and (3) evaluate the ability of an iflora of this nature to capture meaningful biodiversity data. Between April and October 2021, fourteen site visits were conducted, resulting in 469 total observations. Of these, 156 were identified to species using iNaturalist’s identification tool, and 168 are research grade. The observations identified to species consist of 17 pteridophytes, four gymnosperms, 118 dicots, and 20 monocots. Of these species, 14 were determined to have state ranks of S1, S2, or S3 and/or global ranks of G1, G2, G3. Using the Tennessee Cumberland Plateau species area curve (Huskins and Shaw, 2010), the expected number of species for the CBHCP was determined to be 580 species, indicating a need for further documentation. Each of Palmer’s standards may be met using an iNaturalist project to varying degrees of success

    Cognitive Biases Incidence in College Students of a Midwestern Institution

    Cognitive biases, including the misinformation effect, cognitive dissonance, and confirmation bias, are misleading ways of reasoning that can alter our perception of reality. Using questionnaires, this study investigated the extent to which these biases are present in the student community of a Midwestern University. It was hypothesized that a moderate proportion of individuals would show cognitive biases based on the literature and previous experiments. Furthermore, it was expected that participants would employ multiple strategies to justify their behavior and thought processes. With a qualitative design, 81 undergraduate students participated in the study. The research design was observational and statistical analysis included descriptive measurements. Results indicated that more than 70% of the students would engage in risky or unproductive behaviors despite knowing the consequences. Similarly, a high proportion of students tended to believe in the information presented on social media after an event had happened. Lastly, a smaller segment of students tended to look for information that supported their beliefs. These results indicate that college students at this institution are susceptible to the use of mental heuristics. Considering the potential adverse outcomes of such actions raises concerns about students’ cognitive and physical well-being
