    Creating a classroom culture

    Throughout my academic and creative life I have been in many different kinds of classrooms each possessing different values and practices. The art classroom for me was a place of exploration and play, arguably its chief and most important purpose. My thesis seeks to explore how art teachers can foster a creative classroom culture in which students are pursuing some form of expression and how art educators can engage with their students on an equal level and create together. I will also explore how the teacher as a practicing artist can further support and supplement this classroom culture. My thesis will address the following questions: How can an educator integrate their art practice and identity into their classroom? How can an art educator model artist behavior to foster a low-risk environment where experimentation can flourish? What are the benefits of creating a classroom culture and how does the artist identity and their modeled behaviors impact the culture

    Stabilization agent selection guide and comparative study for full depth reclaimed pavement stabilization media case study: Portland cement and emulsified asphalt.

    One of the most important decisions made in using full depth reclamation (FDR) as a rehabilitation technique is the choice of stabilization agents. Amongst the numerous ways of improving the properties of rehabilitating deteriorated pavements is FDR stabilized with media like Portland cement, emulsified asphalt, foamed asphalt, lime, fly ash. However, the subject of choosing the right stabilizing medium for FDR rehabilitation remains one governed by empirical understanding of the rehabilitation process. This paper research FDR practices and aims to develop a suitable guide for selecting appropriate FDR stabilizing agents, based on the structural properties, material properties, environmental properties and climatic properties of the pavement and its location. The research in this paper uses a factorial method to analyze the performance of pavement models across the United States generated using the AASHTO MEPDG program (AASHTOWare), and it compares the structural performance from case studies cement and asphalt stabilized FDR in the state of Tennessee

    To start or not to start: that is the question

    The BAM6QT is a hypersonic wind tunnel that was simulated with a 7-degree half-angle cone with diameters ranging from 4 to 7-inches, three different cone setups, and viscous and inviscid flow computations. These tests were then compared to determine what effects would cause the tunnel to unstart. Unstarting refers to flow not reaching Mach 6 at the apex of the cone or reflection shocks impinging on the surface of the cone causing undesired flow characteristics. There were three main conclusions that were made from this study, initially, it was found that when the BAM6QT was simulated with viscous flow and a 5.5-inch diameter cone with sting and or sting and support the tunnel would unstart. Secondary findings determined that viscous flow and sting and or sting and sting support are essential to the results. The tunnel unstarts due to shock and boundary layer interaction on the 5.5-inch diameter cone

    Preventing privacy attacks in IoT devices

    Today, people use many connected devices to make people’s lives easier in a connected environment. Devices like fitness trackers, smartwatches, smart home appliances, and other devices make people’s lives easier. People can use their smartphones to control the thermostat, television, vacuum cleaner, and other connected devices. While IoT devices make their lives easier, they also concern security threats like privacy. Organizations like the U.S. DoD forbid having fitness trackers on some of their buildings, while other organizations discourage patrons from using them in their spaces. The question of how to use IoT devices and simultaneously safeguard users\u27 privacy is a big challenge. Let’s look at a couple of different ways to secure IoT devices\u27 privacy. Since IoT devices are very vast and very different, no universal scheme exists to prevent privacy attacks; thus, a variety of techniques need to be used. Some blockchain applications and transformations will be used to protect privacy in IoT devices. These algorithms that transform data or use blockchain to manage the data or the flow can prevent privacy attacks. Using such algorithms protects the data of IoT/Smart devices and secures them so that people do not have to worry about not being safe while these devices are being used

    The Effects of Dissolved and Suspended Solids on Freshwater Meiofauna

    Meiofauna include small-sized animals (\u3c 1mm) distributed in all aquatic ecosystems on Earth, where they play fundamental trophic and ecological roles. The biodiversity of marine meiofauna and its links with anthropogenic activities is routinely investigated, however, freshwater communities are less known. This is particularly true for the Southeastern United States, which is greatly investigated and elected a hotspot of biodiversity for larger species but very little is known about the meiofauna. The purpose of this research is to reveal the biodiversity of meiofauna from the Tennessee River and test for potential correlations with anthropogenic activities. As a proxy for pollution, dissolved and suspended solids were considered in this study. The research hypothesis is that meiofaunal biodiversity would be affected by possible changes of dissolved and suspended solids in the water column. Possible mechanisms causing biodiversity shifts could be ascribed to osmotic stresses of animals to cope with variation in dissolved solids or, more indirectly, because different sunlight penetration caused by suspended solids would affect primary production. To test the hypothesis, water samples were collected from nine stations located along the Tennessee River in Hamilton County. Each station was visited three times, and, during each visit, environmental parameters (including dissolved and suspended solids) were measured. Meiofauna biodiversity (estimated as richness, community composition, and phylogenetic diversity) was revealed using a metagenomic approach. Statistical analyses were applied to test for possible correlations between the biodiversity estimates and the measured environmental parameters. Results show a high biodiversity of meiofauna with more than 200 amplicon sequence variants distributed across 10 metazoan phyla. Environmental conditions are highly variable among stations and statistical analyses show that while both dissolved solids (TDS) and turbidity (suspended solids, NTU) did not significantly affect meiofauna biodiversity in the collected samples, various other water and sediment metrics were found to be significant predictors of meiofauna biodiversity. In conclusion, the results of this project not only reveal for the first time the meiofauna biodiversity from the Tennessee River, but also suggest that meiofauna could be used as a bioindicator for several anthropogenic activities in freshwater ecosystems

    Are You on the Menu: Sexual Harassment Experiences of Front-of-House Restaurant Workers

    Still managing in the wake of the COVID pandemic and the”Great Resignation” restaurants and the hospitality industry have seen particularly high rates of turnover and increased difficulty maintaining sufficient staffing numbers. This industry sees the highest rates of sexual harassment claims at work in the U.S.. The reliance on tipping facilitates this form of harassment, leaving organizations responsible for protecting their workers from mistreatment. Experiences of sexual harassment relate to decreased job satisfaction and increased intentions to turnover. This study aims to establish the relationship between sexual harassment experiences at work, existence and enforcement of a sexual harassment policy to protect staff from uncivil customer interactions, managerial and organizational support, and job satisfaction. Specifically we hypothesize that a) increased perceived management support will relate to decreased instances of sexual harassment, b) existence of a protective policy against customers in instances of sexual harassment will relate to decreased instances of sexualharassment, c) lack of such a policy will relate to increased instances of sexual harassment, and d) if existence of a policy is related to increased/decreased instances of sexual harassment, the enforcement of the policy will moderate the relationship such that the relationship is strongest when it is enforced. We plan to recruit N=300 participants and collect data via online survey. Social media (snowball sampling) and recruitment flyers (convenience sampling) around UTC’s campus will be used to recruit participants. Past studies indicate a small to medium effect size of organizational support on experiences of harassment. A nominal by continuous interaction will be used to analyze the data. We aim to provide some broad recommendations for organizations to improve protection of their staff from experiences of customer incivility

    The impact of organizational justice on organizational commitment

    The COVID-19 pandemic has brought awareness and scrutiny to numerous workplace practices, organizational norms, and societal expectations surrounding work. From the Great Resignation phenomena, a new trend advocating for work-life balance boundaries is being shared through TikTok, a relatively new social media platform. ‘Quiet Quitting’ occurs when employees prioritize work-life balance and disregard organizational citizenship behaviors that are not requirements of their job duties and responsibilities. Additionally, there has been a focal shift within perceptions of organizational justice and organizational commitment, with an increase of bringing awareness to employees’ needs. This study will examine the impact of employee perceptions of organizational justice on organizational commitment, with a focus on active-duty Army personnel and civilian employees. Additionally, there will be a focus on how age corresponds with these perceptions. The design will take a cross-sectional, within-subjects approach that will consist of four organizational justice scenarios, in which the participants will determine the likelihood of their organizational commitment (e.g., normative, affective, continuance). A pilot study using structured interviews will act as a manipulation check and be used to develop a content list of reasonings for populating questions to use regarding Army personnel’s organizational experiences and outcomes that cannot be pulled from existing scales. Utilizing the findings from the pilot study and content from existing organizational commitment and justice scales (e.g., OCQ, OCS, COJS, etc.), the main study will compose and distribute a survey. A repeated-measures ANOVA will be conducted for analysis. It is expected that differences will exist between the reported organizational commitment scores of active-duty Army personnel and non-military affiliated employees reported organizational commitment scores across all organizational justice scenarios. While the civilian sector has delved into the concept of work-life balance in the past several years, the U.S. Army has only recently been exploring and integrating various work-life balance viewpoints and models. The proposed research will provide the necessary empirical evidence examining how military personnel are influenced by organizational justice. Furthermore, it will emphasize how that impact should be considered when attempting to alter withdrawal outcomes that result from low organizational commitment (e.g., personnel turnover, absenteeism, etc.).     Stress and eating behaviors

    Studies pertaining to obesity, stress, and their impact on organizations are plentiful. Further, there is an abundance of research surrounding stress at work and eating behaviors. However, studies regarding work stress and fasting are absent. Because of this, our study aims to examine the relationship between stress, fasting behaviors, and interoception. Interoception is the perception of physical (body) sensations, such as hunger. We argue that interoceptive awareness will mediate the positive relationships between stress and fasting behavior. We argue that stress fasting behaviors are likely to occur during periods of high stress, such as balancing work and midterm exams. Therefore, we propose to gather data from working college students to test our hypotheses

    Identifying Personal Energy and Recovery Patterns and their Impact on Well-being

    The study is designed to examine patterns of personal energy expenditure and recovery, and how these patterns are associated with health and well-being. Data will be collected via longitudinal, mixed method survey of a diverse sample of 200 student and non-student adult workers. Measures will include multiple existing tools, including: the Utrecht Work Engagement scale (UWES), Profile of Mood States (POMS), Recovery Experience Questionnaire (REQ), and items from the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Worker Well-Being Questionnaire (WellBQ). A variety of analyses are proposed including latent growth curve modeling and time series analysis. Proposed results include identifying “in-sync” and “out-of-sync” patterns of energy levels and quality of recovery that have different impacts on well-being

    Beyond the classroom: building professional skills with the Flyaway mural

    In April of 2022, I completed a collaborative mural at Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Reflection Riding hosts a radio antenna connected to the Motus Wildlife Tracking System, which studies animal migration routes through North, Central, and South America. Working collaboratively with artists Rondell Crier, Tyus Allen, and Professor Derek Witucki, we designed and installed a mural that would communicate the Motus research to their visitors in the absence of a Reflection Riding employee. The project was funded by various grants awarded by ArtsBuild and The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and organized by budgets that fluctuated throughout the project. This thesis will discuss my research into the Motus system and local murals in Chattanooga. I will walk through my creative methodology and installation process and conclude with lessons I have learned through this project. By conducting research, honing painting and installation techniques, navigating professional relationships, and advocating for myself as an artist, this experience provided a critical foundation for my artistic career and taught me invaluable lessons that I could not have learned in the classroom space alone
