Brand Communications: Why storytelling matters
Stories connect us to places, ideas, and people. When we think of traditional storytelling, we most often associate the practice with cultures representing our personal lives. Corporate brands, however, can also connect with audiences through storytelling. In an ever-changing and challenging labor market, telling stories through “employer branding” can be a powerful tool for reaching talent, especially when those stories are authentic, layered, and represent the lives of real people. When shared in the right places, corporate stories expand reach, widen the talent pool, and pave a path for hiring more diverse talent. Demystifying generative AI: A talent professional’s guide to using a new tool.
Humans’ use of tools is nothing new. For centuries, people have been using tools and technology to increase their performance. However, the speed at which technology is changing the tools we have access to is accelerating. Artificial intelligence (AI) has quickly emerged as a new and powerful technology, and generative AI like ChatGPT and Dall-E have made AI widely accessible - and adopted - by millions of people. However, for users and non-users alike it still remains unclear what generative AI is and how this new technology fits into a practitioner’s toolkit. Like most tools, generative AI can be used in ways that are more and less effective, and the consequences of using a tool incorrectly may be steep (after all, you might not use a hammer to dig a hole). With a clear understanding of what generative AI is, how these new tools apply this technology, and how they might fit into a talent professional’s arsenal, users can understand how to confidently and competently use generative AI applications in their organization. This interactive session will dispel the mystique around generative AI and address some misconceptions about AI-powered interactive platforms. Participants will gain an understanding of what generative AI is, how to incorporate emerging AI tools into the work process, and learn how asking the right questions can help find the right balance between professional expertise, others’ viewpoints, and AI-powered insights. Humans’ use of tools is nothing new, but the tools that AI is powering are a bit novel. This session will help cut through the hype and determine the best way to maximize the benefits and minimize the downsides of using generative AI to attract, retain, and maximize talent in an organization
Simulation scenarios for nurse practitioner educators: A faculty guide
Simulation provides a safe environment for students to practice clinical and communication skills needed in advanced practice nursing. Faculty at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) formally incorporated simulation into the nurse practitioner (NP) program curriculum. The UTC NP simulation program was developed utilizing the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best PracticeTM, Simulation Guidelines and Best Practices for Nurse Practitioner Programs, and the Association of Standardized Patient Educators (ASPE) Standards of Best Practice (SOBP) (International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning [INACSL], 2021; Lewis, 2017; Lioce et al., 2020a). The 15 simulation scenarios were developed and integrated into the UTC NP program curriculum plan to ensure consistency and standardization across faculty members and cohorts. The purpose of this text is to share the logistics and scenarios of the UTC NP simulation program so that other NP programs can implement similar plans. This text provides 15 complete simulation scenarios in a template format for the following populations: pediatric, women, and adult. Also included in this text are how to conduct pre-briefing and debriefing sessions, faculty planning for pre- and postsimulation, faculty and student evaluation tools, and incorporating simulated patient actors (SPAs). It is the intent of the authors that those using this text will be able to incorporate the simulation scenarios and other content into their NP programs to help students meet learning objectives and practice clinical and communication skills using a variety of patient situations.https://scholar.utc.edu/open-textbooks/1002/thumbnail.jp
Adverse childhood experiences, working memory, and stress
This study aimed to explore the relationships among adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), working memory as assessed by an n-back task, and stress. Working memory task demands were manipulated by varying the cognitive load (1-back/3-back) and time limit (standard-paced/time-restricted), and stress was measured both subjectively via self-report and objectively via heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV). Eighty undergraduate participants completed a series of questionnaires and the n-back task while wearing a heart rate monitor. Accuracy was best in the 1-back blocks; however, ACE group differences in n-back accuracy were not detected. This study suggests that those with high ACEs had an elevated experience of subjective stress throughout the task and may have been able to adapt to this stress as reflected by greater HRV and the maintenance of similar n-back accuracy as compared to those with low ACEs
The role of individual and situational factors in the stressor-detachment model
The influx of remote and hybrid work arrangements has led researchers to explore whether recovery differs between remote and hybrid workers and how organizations can best facilitate worker recovery in these contexts. Using the stressor-detachment model as a theoretical framework, the present study investigated whether an individual’s work arrangement and levels of emotional stability influenced the relationship between workload and personal burnout via psychological detachment. Cross-sectional and time-lagged analyses using self-report data from 167 working individuals revealed that detachment fully mediated the workload-burnout relationship in the time-lagged sample; however, no support was found for the mediating effect of psychological detachment in the cross-sectional sample. Primary moderation hypotheses were not supported. Supplemental analyses found a significant interaction between workload and work segmentation in the cross-sectional sample, such that the workload-detachment relationship was positive for those in low segmentation work arrangements and negative for those in high segmentation work arrangements
The portrayal of dissent and the Anglican Church in Victorian literature
The reduction of the power of the Church of England during the Victorian era was inevitably reflected in the work of Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Gaskell, and Charlotte Brontë. In this paper, I will examine one novel from each writer to explore how each responded to the decline of the Church of England and the growth of other denominations. This thesis project rests on the idea that Gaskell presents religious dissent in a sympathetic light and Dickens and Brontë respond to this topic with trepidation. Although the Victorian era brought a new religious standard, Dickens’s and Brontë’s fear of Gaskell’s dissent novel betrays the tight grip which traditionalism still had on Victorian society. The examination of North and South, Hard Times, and Jane Eyre will show how the larger conversation about the cultural shift away from Anglicanism was manifesting itself on the literary page
An examination of the associations between Internet activities, body positivity content, and eating disorder symptomatology
Previous researchers have established comorbidities between behavioral addictions. Although online media use has been linked to disordered eating, the relationship between Internet addiction and binge eating disorder (BED) has not been examined. Our first aim was to examine the relationship between two types of Internet addiction and BED. It was hypothesized that those high in Internet addiction would report greater BED symptoms than those low in Internet addiction. Our second aim was to examine how online media use and body positivity content relate to various eating disorder symptomatology (EDS). We hypothesized that EDS would be positively correlated to online media use and negatively correlated with exposure to body positivity content. Participants (N = 497) in the study completed an online survey. Hypotheses were generally supported. Analyses found that those higher in compulsive online media use had higher binge eating scores. Also, greater Internet and social media use were associated with greater EDS, and greater exposure to body positivity was associated with lower EDS. Follow-up analyses compared how different online activities correlate with EDS. Limitations and future research of the study are further discussed
Relationship with adult ADHD symptoms: Stimulant medication and caffeine
The purpose of the present study was to investigate how adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) perceive stimulant medication and explore the differences in their relationship with caffeine. Participants with more ADHD-related symptoms were expected to have a greater motivation to consume caffeine, anticipate experiencing more of caffeine’s stimulant effects, and have a more positive regard toward the effectiveness of their stimulant medication than those with fewer symptoms. Additionally, those with more inattentive symptoms were predicted to have more of a positive regard toward the effectiveness of their stimulant medication, have a greater motivation to consume caffeine, and anticipate experiencing more of caffeine’s stimulant effects compared to those with less inattentive symptoms. Results determined that the number of ADHD-related symptoms and dominant symptom presentation increased the expectancy for caffeine to be stimulating. Motivation to consume caffeine and reception of medication was unaffected by symptom quantity or presentation type
Alpha band prefrontal asymmetry does not underlie pain approach-avoidance: Results from two EEG studies
Pain research is often focused on escape from pain or approach of relief, yet individuals with chronic pain make complex choices to face their pain to satiate other drives (approach-avoidance conflicts). An abundance of research has indicated that prefrontal alpha band asymmetry (PFA) underlies approach-avoidance in general, but there is limited information about whether PFA underlies pain approach-avoidance conflicts. Electroencephalogram activity was recorded while 70 participants with chronic pain (n=33) and without chronic pain (n=37) approached/avoided stimuli containing simultaneous pain (low-high) and monetary reward (low-high). Findings from both studies revealed that approach-avoidance for pain stimuli is not accompanied by prefrontal asymmetry, irrespective of the presence of chronic pain
Design, modeling, and simulation of secure X.509 certificate revocation
TLS communication over the internet has risen rapidly in the last seven years (2015--2022), and there were over 156M active SSL certificates in 2022. The state-of-the-art Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), encompassing protocols, computational resources, and digital certificates, has evolved for 24 years to become the de-facto choice for encrypted communication over the Internet even on newer platforms such as mobile devices and Internet-of-Things (IoT) (despite being low powered with computational constraints). However, certificate revocation is one sub-protocol in TLS communication that fails to meet the rising scalability demands and remains open to exploitation. In this dissertation, the standard for X.509 revocation is systematically reviewed and critically evaluated to identify its limitations and assess their impact on internet security. Because of fragmented revocation information and limited scalability, even the latest version of the X.509 revocation standard is susceptible to Man-in-the-Middle (MiTM) attacks. Blockchain technology can provide a decentralized and peer-to-peer distributed ledger to enable a unified, tamper-proof platform for X.509 certificate authorities to collaborate securely in a trustless environment. To understand blockchain technology\u27s capabilities and limitations in distributing X.509 revocation information, different blockchain platforms are explored and compared in terms of scalability, degree of decentralization, and cost of operation. Moreover, the unification of the revocation lists leads to a massive expansion in the number of revoked certificates to query by a verifying client thus increasing the latency during revocation lookup. And, to minimize revocation-status lookup times, cryptographic constructions and approximate set-membership data structures are prototyped and analyzed. The key contributions of this dissertation are twofold: 1) the novel design of a secure and robust system for distributing X.509 certificate revocation information; and, 2) the prototype, experimentation, and optimization of cascading XOR filter, fuse filter, and cuckoo filter for quick lookup with zero false positives (and zero false negatives). The Secure Certificate Revocation as a Peer Service (SCRaaPS) is designed using the Lightweight Mining consensus algorithm-based Scrybe blockchain protocol to store and distribute certificate revocation lists. And, the cascading fuse filter (demonstrating the highest space efficiency and fastest build time) is applied to minimize the revocation lookup time with zero false positives
