The relationship between voter perceptions of frequency of police use of excessive force and support for the death penalty
Differing opinions of the death penalty continually conflict with the criminal justice system regarding support or opposition. Previous studies have described how sex and race influence one’s perception of the death penalty, whereas this study emphasizes various contributing predictors aside from sex and race. This study utilizes binary logistic regression to examine the relationship between voter perceptions of police use of excessive force and support for the death penalty along with voter demographics. Secondary data from the American National Election Studies (ANES) 2020 Time Series Survey was incorporated into the data set of this study. The current study is composed of a nationwide sample of 6,583 voters based on respondents who participated in the pre-and post-national ANES survey. Findings indicated that respondents support for the death penalty varies depending on the perception of the frequency of police use of excessive force and across age, race, sex, sexual orientation, and education. Further implications of the relationship between voter perceptions of the frequency of police use of excessive force and their support for the death penalty are discussed
Closing the loop of food systems: analyzing compost within community bounds
The aim of this thesis is to construct a philosophical and ecological argument that places great value on localized food systems in terms of waste. This composition develops the claim that building composting infrastructure on a community scale will curb the global climate crisis and enhance the interconnectedness humans have within themselves, each other, and the natural world. The first prong of this thesis entails a theoretical framework we must function under in order to implement such radical food revolutions in our communities informed by Buddhist principles. This proceeds an international case study of the composting infrastructure of Fort Albany First Nation, Canada; Rwinkwavu, Rwanda; Havana, Cuba; Surabaya, Indonesia; and Dhaka, Bangladesh which emphasize the Indigenous, health-informed, war-related, colonial, and economic dimensions of compost in their respective communities. Following this, a national case study investigates community composting in Chicago, Illinois; Palmas de Mar, Puerto Rico; New York City, New York; Tucson, Arizona; and Sarasota, Florida under the lens of class, business, gender, education, and environmental justice within local food waste. The final case study of this thesis examines the systems of food waste within the author’s hometown and the work that she contributed to building food system resiliency in terms of compost in her community
The immortal laugh track: 20th century technology and media monoculture
The movies, music, and TV shows of the late 20th century have far more staying power than the media that came before and after them. In the 21st century, we consume more media than ever, but we do not gather around the same small group of movies and TV shows in the way that people did decades ago. The M*A*S*H finale in 1983 was viewed by 121.6 million people, over half the population of the United States at that time; the finale of Game of Thrones, one of the most popular shows of the past decade, received around 15 million viewers. The rise of the internet has split viewers up between dozens of different streaming services, and the algorithms of apps like TikTok show viewers content that is specifically tailored to their interests. The huge variety of content available through streaming services and algorithms prevent any form of 21st century media from connecting with as many people as something like the M*A*S*H finale did, and the media from before the 20th century had no technological means of reaching that many people at all. Thus, the media of the late 20th century was released during the perfect technological era between radio and the internet, a time when media could reach mass audiences and mass audiences didn’t yet have the option to watch the specialized content of internet algorithms

Viability of equine assisted activities and therapies for individuals with developmental disorders: a systematic review
The objective of this review is to determine whether Equine-Assisted Activities and Therapies (EAAT) are a viable form of therapy for people with various developmental disorders. A viable form of therapy is one that is more beneficial than traditional forms of therapy that already exist, as traditional therapies may be generally less expensive and have plentiful research to support their use). In order to be beneficial, EAAT would need to yield improved results when either compared side by side with traditional therapy or used as a complementary therapy with traditional therapy. In this systematic review, the included studies examined the effect of an EAAT intervention for individuals with a developmental disorder such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or Downs Syndrome (DS). Studies that focused on participants with cerebral palsy were excluded as well as studies that were not written in English. Results were compared between studies, with a focus on social outcomes in four categories: communication, social motivation, socialization, and social functioning. There were 18 studies included in the final research. It was found that EAAT is generally beneficial for people with developmental disorders. A limiting factor of this review was the inconsistent methodology between studies. This included the sample sizes, outcomes measured, and the methods of measurement. More research needs to be completed regarding the long-term effects of EAAT; however, even as an on-going treatment, EAAT may be viable
Petrographic observations of stromatolites in the late Cambrian to early Ordovician Knox Group, Northwest Georgia and their relationship to stromatolitic fabrics over geologic time
Silica deposits are common in Proterozoic carbonate platforms and are interpreted to form early in the diagenetic history of the carbonate strata. Black early diagenetic chert deposits are often associated with evidence of ancient microbial mats, or stromatolites. Proterozoic chert nodules can contain well-preserved microfossils, because silicification occurs rapidly; however, silica deposition has changed over time and it is unclear if similar deposits exist in the Cambrian period after silica-utilizing organisms evolved. The Copper Ridge Dolomite in the Knox Group, northwest Georgia, which was deposited in the late Cambrian to early Ordovician, contains black chert nodules that follow the structure of stromatolitic fabrics. Unlike Proterozoic stromatolites, the Copper Ridge stromatolites do not preserve many individual microfossils, but the patterns observed in the silicified stromatolites provide insight into the silicification process and later diagenetic processes. Petrographic analysis of the Knox Group stromatolites performed in this study identifies the preservation of stromatolitic layers through the precipitation of silica, and multiple episodes of alteration by diagenetic fluids. In an effort to better understand the silicification patterns observed, silicification experiments aimed at recreating silicification in the lab were begun with the aim of comparing the Knox Group stromatolitic fabrics to the fabrics of lab-created silica rock. Correlating these two fabrics can help identify the geochemical environment of silicification of the Knox Group stromatolites during the late Cambrian and early Ordovician
An analysis of skylight and alternative applications in the adaptive reuse of the Ridgedale Mill
Designing sustainably, at its core, holds the health and wellbeing of the users of the space and the price of ongoing maintenance and installation costs in balance with environmental wellbeing. With each of these points playing a major role, spaces can be designed to be healthy and affordable while also benefiting the overall functional health and efficiency of the space. A key method in designing sustainably is the incorporation of natural daylight within a space to provide general lighting in an energy efficient way and to positively impact the atmosphere of the built environment. For the users of the space, natural daylight can affect the mood, productivity and performance, and overall state of being of each person. After analyzing the pros and cons of three types of daylighting options, traditional skylights, solar tubes, and artificial skylights, the level of daylight entering the space was simulated and the effects applied to human wellbeing, energy efficiency, and environmental health. The results of the lighting simulation informed the design about the best option to incorporate natural daylight. The simulation resulted in solar tubes as the most ideal option for this space with regard to user benefit as well as environmental benefit and savings. Through this thesis, environmental benefit, human wellbeing, and economic viability within a space with regard to the lighting effects of various daylighting options was analyzed
Log file anomaly detection using knowledge graphs and graph neural networks
Log files contain valuable information for detecting abnormal behavior. To detect anomalies, researchers have proposed representing log files as knowledge graphs (KGs) and using KG completion (KGC) techniques to predict new facts. However, current research in this area is limited, and there is no end-to-end system that includes both KG generation and KGC for log-based anomaly detection. In this study, we present an end-to-end system that utilizes graph neural networks (GNNs) and KGC to detect anomalies in log files. The proposed system has two main components. The first component employs templates to generate a KG from logs that capture normal behavior. The second component applies KG embedding models enhanced with GNN layers to the generated KG and employs KGC to determine suspiciousness of new information through binary classification. We evaluated the proposed method using two public datasets with standard KGC metrics. The experimental results demonstrate its promising potential
Effects of Chronic Cannabis Use on Adolescents
This literature will examine the relationship of chronic cannabis use during adolescence to psychological and morphological abnormalities into adulthood. As states continue to decriminalize or legalize cannabis consumption for recreational purposes, concerns about the potential negative effects of cannabis consumption on neurological development during adolescence may be ignored. This review examined 44 journal articles and government reports published between 1997 and 2021. The conclusions drawn from the literature review indicate that over a 19-year time span, cannabis potency has increased from ~4% to ~12%. Secondly, the chronic exposure to exogenous cannabinoids during this time can result in a variety of negative outcomes due to the dysregulation of the endocannabinoid system, one of the systems responsible for fostering brain development. Finally, the literature suggests that specific domains of worry are those of memory, attention, cognition, and emotional regulation as regions responsible for these functions are highly susceptible to alterations because of their elevated levels of CB1 receptors. Inconsistencies in terminology and parameters used to define chronic use are also addressed across all literature referenced in this review.
