Advancing IoT security through blockchain-based decentralized platform and AI-powered digital forensics
The proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, from smartphones, smart thermostats to smart home security systems, is revolutionizing our society and daily lives. However, it also has posed significant challenges to IoT security and forensics. To tackle those challenges, innovative solutions are designed to enhancing IoT security and accelerating investigation of cybersecurity incidents by leveraging recent technological advancements in Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence (AI). First, an IoT service platform, called DISP, is proposed to improve the security and interoperability of IoT systems. DISP utilizes the consortium blockchain technology to transform centralized, insecure IoT communications into decentralized, secure, and traceable IoT services. Second, novel techniques are developed to tackle the new challenges in IoT forensics. To address scalability and data volatility challenges in large-scale mobile forensics, a scalable remote live forensics system, named ReLF, is designed and developed for live extraction of digital artifacts from Android devices. To address the heterogeneity and volume of IoT data in forensics, a novel Knowledge Graph Question Answering (KGQA) framework for processing and analyzing forensic data is proposed. This framework provides an intuitive interface for cybersecurity and forensic professionals to access and analyze evidence using natural language-based questions. By creating those systems for strengthening IoT security and facilitating IoT forensics, this research shines a light on new directions in and approaches to securing IoT systems and investigating cyberattacks against those systems, and it lays the foundation for integrating IoT security with emerging technologies especially blockchain and artificial intelligence
Numerical investigation of the wall temperature effects on shock-wave turbulent boundary layer interactions
The shock-wave turbulent boundary layer interaction (STBLI) is an important phenomenon in many practically relevant high-speed flow applications such as re-entry vehicles, air-breathing engines, rocket nozzles, etc. STBLI occurs in supersonic flow near solid surfaces where a shock wave is generated or reflected. The complex interaction is typically characterized by boundary layer thickening, shock-induced separation, thermo-mechanical loading, and low-frequency unsteadiness. In high-speed aerospace applications, the effects of STBLI can lead to catastrophic failure during flight. For this reason, the accurate prediction of STBLI is crucial for the design of such applications. Although previous investigations have led to an improved understanding of several key features of STBLI, there are many aspects of the interaction which are still not fully understood. The present study uses large-eddy simulations to investigate the effect of wall temperature on the key features of STBLI, namely, the shock-induced separation, mechanical loading, and low-frequency unsteady behavior
Computational optimization of phase change materials on adsorbed carbon dioxide capture systems
Carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and sequester remains a critical area of research in chemical engineering. Novel sorbent/substrate structuring and novel sorbent compositing are emerging fields of research for advancing the efficiency of adsorbent-based capture technologies and establishing the viability of next-generation absorbent-based capture technologies. This work details the development and validation of a finite element model which solves for the fabrication of novel adsorbent structures composited with phase change materials (PCM) optimized in selected design applications. The design applications include internally coated hollow fibers, externally coated annular finned tube, and a storage vessel which are presented in reduced computational form. This study reviews the thermofluidic characteristics of selected adsorbents for pairing with phase change materials to be incorporated into sorbent cycling devices, with a discussion of the state of the industry adsorption capture technologies. Extensive description is given to adsorption system characterization and to the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model formulation. The study takes into consideration the challenges associated with gas theory in multiphysics and multiscale modeling, particularly as they relate to fluid-structure interactions in micro and nanoporous regions. This research aims to provide a foundation for further advancements in computational methodologies applied to (CO2) capture processes which incorporate learning algorithms that provide optimized material and device designs. Model results generate gas capture values and allow for the examination of domain isotherms and kinetics. Utilizing the L-BFGS optimization method, a distribution of phase change material within an activated carbon adsorbent bed was determined to improve (CO2) uptake across device designs indicating feasibility for next generation designs
Disability avoidant language and other factors in the erasure of disabled students in sexual education
There is a distinct gap in knowledge surrounding disability and sex education. To understand how disability is currently addressed in state sexual health education, I undertook a qualitative content analysis of sexual health standards from nine individual states. My review of the literature concluded that multiple factors contribute to the lack of disability coverage in sexual education programming. Intuitional, social, and educational barriers lead to lack of sexual health information. In absence of education on disabled sexuality, negative attitudes and perceptions are common. When approaching this research, I expected there to be wide gaps in acknowledgment, language, and inclusion concerning disability. Four main themes emerged: appropriateness of sexuality content, explicit mentions of disability, avoidance of disability language, and acknowledgement of overall human variance. These results indicate a need for sexuality education to explicitly acknowledge how disability can impact sexuality
A comparative study between a faith-based psychoeducational intervention and psychological well-being
The purpose of this study was to examine the difference in participants’ perceived psychological well-being/distress and perceived faith maturity over time based on participation in Walking Worthy a Journey to Freedom (WWJ). The research was designed as a fully mixed sequential equal status design with the quantitative portion conducted as an ex post facto comparative study followed by a focus group. Participants completed the CORE-OM, the FMS and RPWB at the beginning and the conclusion of the program. Statistically significant negative (suggests improvement) correlations were found for overall well-being (p \u3c .001, d = .381), subjective well-being ( p \u3c .001, d = 0.672), problems/symptoms (p \u3c .001, d = .549), life-functioning (p \u3c .001, d = .506), and risk (p \u3c .001, d = .169). Differences in participants’ perceived overall faith maturity (p \u3c .039, d = .352), perceived view of God (p \u3c .001, d = .620), and perceived view of others (p \u3c .022, d = .593) reflected a statistically significant increases. Differences in perceived overall psychological well-being (p \u3c .001, d = .401), autonomy (p \u3c .003, d = .540), environmental mastery (p \u3c .001, d = .637), personal growth (p \u3c .001, d = .451), positive relations (p \u3c .001, d = .451), purpose in life (p \u3c .003, d = .415), and self-acceptance (p \u3c .001, d = .642), showed statistically significant mean increases. Through the focus group, participants contrasted negative themes including perfectionism, shame, living in lies, and codependency with positive themes of living in truth, freedom, making sense of life, and facilitating change. Spiritual themes included improved relationships, seeing others through God’s eyes, experiencing God’s love, and seeing self through God’s eyes. The mental health and spiritual constructs and themes explored through this study revealed movement away from pathology and toward wellness over the time spent in Walking Worthy. These findings provide mental health and faith-based practitioners a research base from which to evaluate the use of the program in practice
Automated detection and prediction of electrical disturbances in a power transmission system
As power quality becomes a higher priority in the electric utility industry, utilities simply do not have the required personnel to analyze the ever-growing amount of data by hand. This thesis presents an automated approach for the analysis of power quality phenomena within a power transmission system by leveraging rule-based analytics as well as machine learning to analyze the characteristics of the recorded data. Waveform signatures analyzed within this thesis include: various faults, motor starting, and incipient instrument transformer failure. The developed analytics were tested on 160 waveform files and yielded an average accuracy of 99%. Machine learning techniques are also used to predict voltage unbalance on the transmission system above a certain threshold, which yielded an accuracy of over 91%. This work will result in time savings for engineers as well as increased reliability of the transmission system by providing near real-time detection, identification, and prevention of disturbances
Bronze monuments: the terror of death and its role in The Great Gatsby
This thesis is about the way humans cope with death through the lens of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby in the wake of war. The thesis contains three chapters all of which work in succession to build a picture of various characters’ death denial. Chapter 2 considers how Nick’s narrative is an attempt to deny death through the ritual of mourning. Chapter 3 analyzes wealth in the novel and its role in striving for immortality. Gatsby transcends the limits of an ordinary life with his interest in opulence, while Nick’s wealth provides a level of privilege that allows for his avoidance of hardship. Chapter 4 examines the novel’s three main female characters: Jordan, Daisy, and Myrtle. The primary goal of this thesis is to demonstrate how the text of Gatsby serves as a piece of meta-fiction that functions in concert with its characters to transcend the limitations of mortality
Who\u27s being transcended?: the role of belief of other as self in mediating the relationship between mystical experience and mental health
Throughout history humans have experienced instances where the boundary between self and other dissolved, and the ordinary sense of “I” was replaced with a unity to all of existence or a higher power. These are commonly referred to as mystical experiences, and although the relationship between mystical experiences and positive mental health outcomes has largely been supported, the psychological mechanisms underlying it are unknown. This study develops a scale to test the theory that Belief of Other as Self (BOS) mediates the relationship between mystical experience and mental health. This study also hypothesizes spiritual practice and time elapsed since one’s most recent mystical experience moderate the strength of the aforementioned relationship. Results support BOS as a mediator, while neither elapsed time nor spiritual practice were found to be moderators. These findings reveal the need for developing clinical interventions targeting a patient’s fundamental sense of self to improve mental health
The Impact of School Closures and Isolation on Parents in the US
The COVID-19 pandemic was an unprecedented global event. Research demonstrates the impact the pandemic had on both parents and children regarding their mental health and learning abilities. The current study examined parents’ experiences during the pandemic. This study had a particular focus on how changes to schooling impacted school experiences and social emotional experiences. The sample was comprised of parents whose children were in K-12 schooling and data was collected during Fall of 2020. The findings suggest that while there were several challenges, parents also reported some positive outcomes. This study serves as a foundation for future research to be conducted as long-term effects need to be examined. The study also provides a better understanding of the impacts that school closures have on children and adults. Limitations and future research are further discussed
Examining Belonging and The Fear of Missing Out in Relation to Social Media Use: A Two-Part Study
We conducted two survey studies to better understand how using social media relates to differing outcomes in perceptions of social support and the Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) in college students (N = 251, N = 529, respectively). Correlation analyses revealed higher levels of FoMO were most strongly related to scrolling behaviors on social media, whereas posting behaviors were correlated with increased feelings of belonging and lower levels of FoMO. No significant correlation was found between perceived online social support and FoMO. Finally, no significant gender differences in FoMO were found. These behavior-based relationships are likely linked to people\u27s innate need for belonging. The results of our studies suggest that posting (rather than scrolling) relates to more feelings of belonging and fewer feelings of missing out. Limitations and future directions are further addressed
