    Investigations into the role of entropy-selected RF-DNA fingerprint features on ID-verification performance in the presence of rogue emitters

    The Internet of Things (IoT) is projected to reach 30.9 billion devices by 2025. However, most lack adequate security measures against sophisticated threats. Specific Emitter Identification (SEI) is a crucial security approach for authenticating wireless emitters. This work integrates RF-DNA fingerprinting, a specialized form of SEI, with Deep Learning (DL) techniques to authenticate the identity of authorized emitters. This authentication becomes crucial in the presence of “rogue” emitters who deliberately impersonate authorized emitters using falsified digital credentials. The RF-DNA fingerprints are extracted from the entropy-selected regions within the TF representations of an emitter’s signals. The obtained results demonstrate the success of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) in verifying the identities of all authorized emitters at an accuracy rate of 95% or higher. Additionally, the CNN effectively detects and rejects all twelve rogue attacks with an accuracy rate of 89% or better, at an SNR of 9 dB

    Microfaunal remains from the Ryan-Harley site

    The Ryan Harley site is located in the Wacissa River basin in northern Florida. It is one of the few sites in the southeastern United States to contain a Suwannee point artifact. Several excavations in 2015 and 2017 showed extinct and extant faunal remains within and around the Suwannee component. The geoarchaeological data showed that whether these remains were in situ or not is inconclusive. This paper will focus on the microfloral and faunal remains to draw conclusions about the environment encountered during the Younger Dryas (12,900-11,700 cal B.P). The relationship between floral and faunal species present will help to draw conclusions about the changes in the environment and how Suwannee-aged people were interacting with their surroundings

    The Jazzy Building: a revitalization plan

    The Jazzy building is located at 619-621 Market Street in Chattanooga, TN in the City Center downtown area. Both the interior and exterior of the building show signs of being vacant for a long period. The Jazzy building has significant historical value, especially the east and west facades that feature various ornamentations and details that testify to its significance. Although the building\u27s interior has been severely damaged, it is still possible to salvage and reuse some of the materials. To determine the appropriate use of the Jazzy building, a market analysis of downtown Chattanooga research was referenced, along with a survey by the UTC (University of Tennessee at Chattanooga) interior design students from the class of 2024. The building\u27s interior space and design must comply with the current building codes. Finally, the renovation materials and finishes must meet some of the LEED and Well Credits standards, which focus on sustainable designs that enhance human health and experience

    Prevalence of PI*Z and PI*S alleles of alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency: A Study on Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium

    The α1-Antitrypsin (AT) functions as the primary serum inhibitor of proteolytic enzymes, including neutrophil elastase. The presence of these abnormal alleles disrupts the normal functioning of α1-Antitrypsin (AT), leading to Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (AATD). Homozygotes for type Z experience a substantial reduction in serum AT concentration, increasing the risk of pulmonary emphysema or hepatic cirrhosis. Homozygous S alleles and heterozygotes of type SZ exhibit a less severe reduction in serum AT concentration. Clinicians suggest that even though the reduction is less severe, it may still lead to Mild AAT Deficiency. The primary objective of this study was to enhance our understanding of the frequency of the Z and S alleles, enabling accurate estimates of the prevalence and count of PiZZ and PiSS genotypes within the state of Tennessee, USA. We present the analysis of data collected from the Tennessee population and screened following ATS guidelines. We study the prevalence of homozygote (ZZ) AAT, heterozygote AAT deficiency, and the relationship to lung function, and potential risk of Chronic Obstructive pulmonary Disease (COPD) in hospital admission, readmission and all-cause mortality. The findings presented here may serve as a valuable resource for healthcare professionals, researchers, and policymakers involved in respiratory health and genetic disorders

    An examination of the perceived factors of internship programs that lead students to remain with an organization after completing an internship

    Over the past decade, there has been considerable growth in the number of undergraduate students completing internships in the United States (US). Through increased awareness and participation, internships have become known for developing career readiness skills, gaining first-hand experience in the workplace, and bridging the transition from academia to the world of work. As illustrated by the elevated number of college graduates reporting an internship experience upon graduation, internships are becoming a high-impact practice within the collegiate experience. Identified as a gateway to recruitment and hiring by organizations, internships are structured to provide students with direct work experience related to their career interests. Internships assist students in connecting their workplace experiences with the theoretical concepts learned in the classroom and, thus, their full-time roles postgraduation. The purpose of this study was to explore whether a relationship exists between a student’s internship or applied learning experience and the student’s conversion rate at the organization. Despite the increasing popularity of internships and their ability to be a catalyst for developing transferable skills that build professional networks, limited research exists on how internship experiences contribute to a student’s desire to work with their internship host full-time upon completion of their internship. Furthermore, research is limited on the factors and long-term effects contributing to a student’s decision to continue employment with their internship company. The study\u27s primary goals were to determine if differences exist in acceptance rates between students with positive experiences and students with non-positive experiences

    When the forecast predicts burnout: the impact of sunshine and rainfall on engagement

    Cultural climate data based on location may impact individual work attitudes. For example, Alimoglu et al. (2009) found that nurses exposed to sunlight for at least three hours a day experienced less work stress and higher satisfaction at work, calling researchers to pay attention to climate characteristics that may affect individual well-being at work. Furthermore, weather conditions are an important yet understudied antecedent of individual well-being at work (Venz et al., 2021). Weather was reliably found to relate to positive well-being states, suggesting that measuring average days of sunshine and days of rain in each zip code area may have a direct or moderating effect on work stress and burnout. This study will examine the influence of zip code-based objective climate data on burnout and engagement. Consistent with previous literature, two hypotheses will be tested: H1: Individuals who reside in zip codes with less average rain per year and greater average sun per year will report lower levels of burnout. H2: Individuals who reside in zip codes with less average rain per year and greater average sun per year will report higher levels of engagement. Using Prolific, we recruited 660 working individuals over the age of 18 who worked a minimum of 30 hours per week. Each individual was granted $4.00 for their participation in the study. Burnout was measured with the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI; Demerouti et al., 2001) to measure burnout through two perspectives: exhaustion and disengagement. Work engagement will be measured with the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (Schaufeli & Bakker, 2004). The Utrecht Work Engagement Scale measures vigor, dedication, and absorption. Weather and climate data were obtained from a City Report database based on participant zip codes. With the data presented, other occupational and demographic variables are considered to measure extraneous variables and influences. Results indicated a significant negative correlation of .109 (p \u3c .05) between average rainfall and burnout levels. This suggests that higher rainfall may be associated with lower burnout levels. No significant interaction was found between the average days of sun exposure and burnout. Additionally, there was no significant correlation between average days of rain and sun with work engagement. When analyzing our findings, it was found that there is no relationship between engagement and climate variables. This may suggest that individual perceptions of climate may be more significant than objective weather conditions. Additionally, Hypothesis 1 was not supported, and it was significant in the opposite direction than expected. This could indicate that adverse weather may create an environment that produces engagement or that rain may have a recovery effect. Further research is needed to understand this finding to best provide insight for practitioners

    Assessing the Utility of a Career Exploration Platform for Psychology Students

    Background Psychology students are often told that obtaining a graduate degree is necessary for meaningful employment, due to the field’s history of prioritizing graduate school (Appleby, 2018). Underemployment is a battle that many psychology undergraduates face (Burning Glass Institute, 2024). This can be discouraging, and students are often unaware of postgraduate options alternative to grad school (Halonen, 2013). Eugene is an online tool created to show undergraduate psychology majors their career options. Students select from a psychology list on the Eugene website, which produces the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) they have gained in those courses alongside a list of potential jobs informing them which jobs they may be qualified for immediately after graduating, and jobs that require additional education. The goal is to provide students with a better understanding of where and how their earned KSAs can be applied post-graduation. However, Eugene is relatively new; therefore, the proposed study aims to evaluate Eugene’s ease of navigation, novelty, and utility of output. Methods This study will evaluate Eugene’s ability to meet the intended objectives by utilizing a survey and focus groups. In addition to collecting demographic information, this study will measure how students plan to use the site for career searching, potential benefits, if participants find it useful, and whether they would rely on it for future use. Participants will complete an online survey immediately following their initial use. The survey will also include an option to consent to participate in a follow-up focus group occurring within one week after completing the survey. Focus group participants will again use Eugene in a lab setting, then answer open-ended questions in order to further evaluate the effectiveness and ease of use of Eugene and its output. Expected Results & Implications It is expected that respondents will find the tool most useful if they intend to go straight into the workforce. Some additional anticipated concerns include users being overwhelmed with the amount of information presented, skipping over some of the information, having difficulty navigating the resource, and misinterpreting the numbers shown on the KSA output page. Findings will be used to guide future site updates and implementation of Eugene into classroom and Psychology Department programming. The results of the proposed study are expected to increase the relevance and utility of the Eugene website and allow Psychology undergraduate students to more efficiently use the website to guide their career path

    Exploring the relationship between nutrition-related attitudes and use of Scrappy’s Cupboard among college students at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga

    Introduction This thesis examines the relationship between nutrition-related attitudes and the use of Scrappy’s Cupboard, a campus food pantry, among undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC). This study aims to determine how students’ attitudes toward nutrition influence their likelihood of utilizing campus food resources, highlighting differences between users and non-users of Scrappy’s Cupboard. A correlation between nutrition-related attitudes and the use of Scrappy\u27s Cupboard was expected, with pantry users reporting more positive attitudes towards nutrition compared to non-users. Methods A survey was administered to UTC students to assess their nutrition-related attitudes, food pantry usage, and demographic characteristics. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and phi coefficients were employed to analyze the data and determine the relationship between nutrition attitudes and food pantry use. Results Results indicated that non-users of Scrappy’s Cupboard were more nutritionally aware than users. Non-users demonstrated greater attention to nutrition information and health-conscious behaviors, though chi-square analyses showed that these differences were not statistically significant. Discussion These findings suggest that users and non-users of campus food resources may differ in their nutritional awareness, but other factors, such as accessibility and convenience, could play a role in pantry usage. This study contributes insights into the nutritional attitudes of college students and offers recommendations for campus food resources to incorporate strategies that appeal to diverse student needs and levels of nutritional awareness

    The influence of personal factors on wrongful convictions

    Previous work has identified factors that influence the likelihood of wrongful conviction. However, fewer efforts have been made to examine how these factors influence the amount of time between wrongful conviction and exoneration. This is crucial to the expansion of innocence research and the contextualization of wrongful convictions within the criminal justice system. This study employs negative binomial regression to analyze data collected by the National Registry of Exonerations (NRE). Using a sample of 2,349 cases in which the most severe conviction was murder, sexual assault, child sexual abuse, or drug possession, I examine the influence of an exoneree’s age, race, and biological sex on time to exoneration while controlling for worst crime, number of crimes, and the number of causes for wrongful conviction. Findings demonstrate the effects of age, biological sex, race, number of causes, and severity of conviction on the amount of time lost due to wrongful convictions
