    Mouthpieces of the god: on translating Bacchae

    Euripides’ Bacchae is one of the most well-known and most frequently performed Greek tragedies. However, it is too often distanced from its origins in the Dionysia, a religious festival celebrated in honor of the god Dionysus, at which it was performed as part of tragic ritual. This paper analyzes the specific translation choices of three authors, Anne Carson, Gilbert Murray, and Emily Wilson, and how they affect the meanings of their different translations as a whole. These choices are broken down according to three domains, inspired by Aristotle’s definition of tragedy in Poetics. The religious, cathartic effect of each play is evaluated according to the poetic quality of the work, the characterization of Dionysus, and the relationships between the audience and the characters of the play. The thesis ends with a reflection on the religious nature of translation itself, positioning it within the tragic ritual that Bacchae was written as a part of and describes

    Person-centered preemployment transition services: student and parent involvement

    The implementation of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) in 2014, changed the way state operated vocational rehabilitation (VR) programs provide services to students with disabilities. WIOA did this with the introduction of the provision of preemployment transition services to students with a disability aged 14-22 and allowed for the provision of services to both potentially eligible students and eligible students with an IPE. This study explored the associations of preemployment transition services in relation to the number of days from eligibility to VR case closure with an exit reason of competitive integrated employment outcome. The quantitative results of the study demonstrated a decrease in the number of days from eligibility to VR case closure with an exit reason of competitive integrated employment for students who received preemployment transition services. Additionally, the qualitative embedded thematic analysis results of this research allowed for the identification of three themes. Discomfort in self-advocating, level of understanding and successful transition, and value of lived experiences are the three themes that emerged from the researcher’s embedded analysis of the student participants’ responses to the survey and interview open-ended questionnaires. The results of this study provide VR professionals and educators information about the importance of preemployment transition services, the student and parent desires to be involved in the selection of services, and student perspectives about preemployment transition services assisting them with life after high school

    Vascular flora of Bark Camp Barrens WMA, Coffee County, Tennessee

    A vascular plant inventory of Bark Camp Barrens Wildlife Management Area, Coffee County, Tennessee was performed over the 2023 and 2024 growing seasons. The site is a 1,395-ha area located 10km east of Manchester, Tennessee in the Barrens region of the Eastern Highland Rim. A total of 698 species and lower taxa from 349 genera and 127 families were inventoried. Two species were G1 or G2, 35 species were listed on the Tennessee Rare Plant List, and 209 species were S1 or S2. Additionally, all known digitized herbarium specimens from the nearby May Prairie State Natural Area were cataloged, creating a preliminary vascular plant checklist of 387 species. Furthermore, a list of 128 species believed to reside in the May Prairie State Natural Area, were identified for targeted specimen collection. Most rare species were found to reside in geographically isolated wetlands, which are under imminent threat of deregulation in Tennessee

    Investigating the relationship between intelligence and executive function through visual scanning strategies

    Executive function (EF) refers to a set of cognitive processes responsible for higher-order thinking, behavioral regulation, and goal-directed behavior, while intelligence is considered a contributing factor to cognitive performance. Previous research has explored the relationship between these two constructs, but it has potentially overlooked the individual differences necessary for a comprehensive understanding of its complexity. This study aimed to investigate these individual differences in EF by employing novel eye-tracking methodology within a Go/No-Go task. We recruited 99 participants from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga to complete an adapted Go/No-Go task and the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence Second Edition (WASI-II). We found that higher intelligence was associated with more efficient visual scanning strategies (i.e. fewer fixations and longer durations). Individuals who made fewer fixations and had longer fixation durations scored higher on block design, matrix reasoning, and vocabulary subscales in the WASI-II, and fixation duration significantly predicted intelligence

    Reducing Barriers to Workplace Accommodation for Neurodiverse Employees The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) established legal protections for employees with disabilities requiring workplace accommodations (American with Disabilities Act, 1990), however research demonstrates that neurodiverse employees continue to face barriers to disclosure and support (Doyle, 2020; Rollnik-Sadowska & Grabińska, 2024). Despite the implementation of formal accommodation request processes, a gap often remains between the accommodations employees receive and those they perceive as necessary (McDowall et al., 2023). This study aims to answer: How can organizations reduce barriers to satisfactory workplace accommodations for neurodiverse employees? Methods Guided by organizational support theory (OST), which focuses on employee perceptions of how much organizations value their well-being and contributions (Kurtessis et al., 2017), this research proposes a study examining how OST shapes access to and satisfaction with workplace accommodations. First, we survey neurodiverse employees to examine discrepancies between satisfaction with current accommodations and satisfaction with desired accommodations. Second, we test how organizational factors, specifically perceived organizational support (POS) and psychological safety, influence satisfaction with accommodations, intent to disclose neurodiversity, and perceived performance. Prior work suggests that anticipated stigma and low psychological safety are major deterrents to disclosure (Madaus, 2008; Toth & Dewa, 2014), which in turn limits access to adequate accommodation (Gignac et al., 2025). Finally, we experimentally evaluate whether structured accommodation request formats reduce barriers to access. Participants will be randomly assigned to request accommodations through an open-text form, a structured list, or a combined structured & open-text option. We hypothesize that providing structured lists, aligned with prior exploratory findings on technology based accommodations (Tomczak & Ziemiański, 2023), will increase satisfaction with accommodation processes, particularly for employees reporting lower baseline organizational support and psychological safety. Planned Analyses & Implications Planned analyses include paired t-tests for accommodation satisfaction measures, mediation models for organizational climate variables, and ANOVAs to test differences across experimental conditions. Data will be collected from a sample of employed adults who self identify as neurodiverse, recruited through Prolific. Expected findings will demonstrate that structured accommodation requests will reduce reliance on disclosure alone, improving accommodation satisfaction. Implications include evidence-based strategies for HR practitioners to proactively improve accommodation satisfaction, strengthen psychological safety, and overall organizational support. Together, these findings will advance both research and practice by clarifying how organizational systems can reduce barriers to neurodiverse employees\u27 success at work

    Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Employee Job Performance, Communication, and Job Security

    The recent mass influx of Artificial Intelligence (AI) over the last 10 years has impacted how many professions operate (Olan et al., 2023). These operational changes include a decrease in clerical positions as AI tools, such as language automation software, have been implemented to replace routine tasks like data entry and shift scheduling (World Economic Forum, 2023). Changes can also be seen in healthcare, where AI diagnostic tools assist doctors in interpreting medical images, such as tears or fractures (Gitto et al., 2024). Research supports AI integration benefits, including reduced employee burnout and lower turnover rates in jobs such as engineering, legal, and medical fields due to its ability to always be there with a low flaw rate (Alhuzali et al., 2025; Buchanan et al., 2020; Zheng et al., 2025). AI also enhances employees\u27 work performance in key areas such as meeting weekly metrics, correcting simple errors, and even data analysis (Dong et al., 2024). However, AI has negatively impacted interpersonal relationships between co-workers by fostering a disconnect depending on the employee’s work environment (Herath et al., 2025), and employees who find themselves interacting with AI frequently have reported decreased job security when AI is used in recruitment and direct work assistance (Raj, 2024). This study seeks to examine the impact of artificial intelligence on full-time employees’ job performance, communication, and job security perceptions. Past research on the impact of AI in the workplace has been limited to surveys issued by organizational leadership, which is likely biased due to employees feeling pressured to answer positively (Keiser & Payne, 2019). This current study will investigate employees’ perceptions toward AI through anonymous surveys issued to full-time employees from outside the official organizational structure. Participants will include full-time employees across a broad range of industries, recruited online and in person, who report interacting with AI at least two to three days a week. Measures will include the Job Inventory Scale, the Individual Work Performance Questionnaire, the Computer-Mediated Communication Competence Scale, and the Attitude Towards Artificial Intelligence at Work Scale. The results of this study can help management better understand how employees truly perceive AI. This insight could beneficially change how they implement future training, improve internal communication, and approach the recruitment and development of employees

    Advance metabolite identification from tandem mass spectra using deep generative models

    Tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) is a modern technique for measuring metabolites. MS/MS spectra represent molecules by the fragment patterns of compounds that contain structural features of the precursor molecules. The database-searching strategy is the most popular for metabolite identification among its peers. It matches the query MS/MS spectrum to a database of molecule candidates, identifying the metabolite that best matches the query spectrum. This study uses the database-searching strategy and focuses on developing a novel machine learning identification tool. This tool applies autoencoders to map metabolite structures and MS/MS spectra to latent spaces separately. Then, we train a classifier to identify real metabolite-spectrum matches based on the latent space features of metabolites and spectra. Further, we build a generative adversarial network (GAN) to optimize the classifier as the discriminator. A large number of experiments are conducted. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of our tool

    Do females counter against costly males in the degu, Octodon degus?

    Sexual conflict over reproduction may result in females incurring reproductive costs from males. Females may counter against costly males through social support from cohesive relationships with other females. In plural breeders, social support may promote communal offspring care, improving the number of offspring weaned and survival of offspring. We studied the common degu (Octodon degus), a plurally breeding rodent endemic to Chile, to evaluate (i) whether males negatively influence female reproduction, (ii) if cohesive female social relationships counter the influence of costly males, and (iii) whether females reproductively benefit from cohesive social relationships. Degu males delayed female offspring production and decreased the per capita number of offspring weaned by females. Contrary to expectations, cohesive female relationships were not associated with increased reproductive success. Our study suggests that females experience a reproductive cost associated with males that they attempt to counter through cohesive relationships, but cohesive relationships are not reproductively beneficial
