Perceptions of stress and its impact on burnout depending on job status
Previous research has found that stress is a key contributor to burnout, and the causes of stress include job demands, lack of resources, and personality traits (Bakker et al., 2014). Although most research on burnout has focused on employed populations, with work demands and resources contributing to burnout, college students may also be susceptible to burnout from their academic demands (Pisarik, 2009). Several studies have focused on the ways in which motivational dispositions can affect student burnout (Duran et al., 2006; Pisarik, 2009). However, there is a lack of research examining how perceptions of stressors can affect burnout. Particularly, viewing stress as a sign of achievement and stress as a competition (Jennings, 2017) could have some major implications for student burnout. The present study will investigate the relationship between stress as achievement and stress as competition and both social and academic burnout among college students. Because job demands have a positive relationship with burnout (Lee & Ashforth, 1996), the study also compares job status (e.g. full-time, part-time) of students as an additional stressor beyond academic demands. We examine how job status impacts the relationship between both types of stress perceptions and burnout. Our specific hypotheses are that: 1) stress as achievement has a positive relationship with burnout, 2) stress as competition has a positive relationship with burnout, and 3) these relationships are stronger depending when students are also employed. Data was collected via an in-person survey, which was a component of a larger daily diary study, of 134 college students at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Collection occurred during the final three weeks of the Fall 2018 semester, prior to final exams. The measures in the study included demographics, background information on individual differences, health behaviors, coping strategies, and the different perceptions of stress. Students were recruited through SONA, which offers extra credit for students taking Psychology courses that participate in research studies. Students had to complete the in-person background survey, and were then briefed on the expectations for the daily diary study. Analyses for this study are focused on data provided in the background study and are ongoing. Results will be prepared prior to the RCIO conference
Exploring the potential for rare and common Borodinia species to acclimate to change
An important ecological question that remains unanswered is why some species are rare while others are common. Because the natural world is dynamic, in order to persist, species must successfully respond to the environmental changes they experience. The ability to be plastic may be especially important to the survival of species in the face of rapid environmental change because such quick change does not offer species time to migrate or adapt. Consequently, differential plasticity between rare and common species, with rare species possessing less plasticity than common species, could help explain the differing successes of persisting in a large geographic distribution. Here, I used a comparative trait-based approach to assess the ability of a rare and common congeneric species pair to acclimate to environmental change with a focus on growth measures. Specifically, I evaluated the growth and plasticity of rare Borodinia perstellata and common B. laevigata to altered light, water, and temperature conditions in environmentally controlled growth chambers. I found that both species respond similarly to different environmental conditions and have similar plasticity, but some of my results suggest that the rare Borodinia perstellata could be generally less plastic than the common Borodinia laevigata. Specifically, B. laevigata possessed greater plasticity to grow taller and more leaves in both the altered water and temperature conditions while B. perstellata only contained greater plasticity for growing more shoot mass in the light condition. Since the common B. laevigata was found to be more plastic across a wider range of environmental differences than the rare Borodinia perstellata, the hypothesis that differential plasticity can help explain species rarity and commonness is limitedly supported, but further research should be conducted to confirm the hypothesis
Sustainable reuse: the adaptive reuse of the Chattanooga Choo Choo into the Chattanooga Market using LEED
Buildings account for a significant percentage of energy use, material consumption, and waste production. This study argues that a solution for this issue is the adaptive reuse of existing buildings. Research shows that reusing existing buildings for new design projects helps to decrease the amount of energy consumed and waste produced. When adapting historic buildings specifically, the cultural significance within the community is maintained (Department of the Environment and Heritage, 2004). Sustainability has often been seen as more difficult when adapting historic buildings due to the importance of protecting the historical character and design of the building (Polo Lopez & Frontini, 2014). This thesis creates a hypothetical adaptive reuse plan for adapting the Chattanooga Choo Choo into the Chattanooga Market, a location that will be used by local farmers and vendors to sell their goods. The project will use the LEED v4: New Construction and Major Renovation rating system in an attempt to document a LEED certification for the building based on its current state. Showing that historically significant buildings can be renovated and reused in a sustainable manner can help pave the way for increased sustainable implementation of other historically significant buildings
A hierarchical approach to automated identification of anomalous electrical waveforms
Power utilities employ smart\u27\u27 field devices capable of digitally recording electrical waveforms. The relationship between events and their recorded waveforms can be exploited for characterization of the power grid’s state over any period of time and facilitating the impact electrical disturbances have on equipment, subsystems, and systems. Over a period of one month, these devices record approximately 2,000 electrical disturbance waveforms. Currently, analysis of these waveforms is conducted using by-hand approaches; thus, severely limiting the analysis to roughly 2%. The analysis is done hours to days after the events occurred, which negates informed, timely corrective actions. This document presents an automated hierarchical approach capable of identifying specific events using the electrical disturbance waveforms stored using COMmon format for TRAnsient Data Exchange (COMTRADE) files. The developed approach processes a single file in 1.8 seconds and has demonstrated successful identification of 140 events with a success rate of 91%
Optimal modulation and topology design of modular multilevel converter for grid integration of solar photovoltaic systems
Modular multilevel converter (MMC) stands out among converter topologies for medium/high-power applications. With salient features like modularity and scalability, MMC can meet the requirement of theoretically any voltage level with higher efficiency and superior harmonic performance, using converter components with reduced ratings. Unlike conventional converters, MMC has a higher switching frequency due to its higher number of switching components. While MMC has been mainly considered for transmission-level applications such as HVDC, it still needs improvements for medium-voltage systems and grid integration of distributed energy resources. The contribution of this thesis is twofold. First, modulation techniques are designed to reduce switching frequency through novel advanced submodule sorting algorithms, which provide a level of controllability over two conflicting constraints – switching frequency reduction and capacitor voltage deviation – for HVDC applications. Second, a topology design based on full-bridge submodules is proposed to use MMC in grid integration of solar photovoltaic systems
More Than Simply “Letting Go”: Stakeholder Perspectives on Parental Roles in Health Care Transition
The transfer from pediatric to adult health care for youth with special health care needs (YSHCN) is a vulnerable period. Parents play a pivotal role in the transition process, however, little is known about the specific ways they may support YSHCN in negotiating the transition to adult services. A qualitative supplementary secondary data analysis was conducted to explore stakeholders’ perceptions about parents’ roles in health care transition. Thematic analysis was used to analyze individual and focus group interviews. Four themes were identified: 1) Parents are crucial; 2) Changing roles; 3) Interdependence rather than independence; 4) One of many transitions. These themes may serve as the basis for planning future intervention studies directed at parents of YSHCN

Ionizing radiation effects spectroscopy
The reliability of microelectronics operating in harsh environments is a concern for space systems. Various stresses, such as exposure to ionizing radiation and extreme temperatures can result in performance degradation, transient anomalies, and hard failures. These issues have become evident in recent years with the increasing interest in the use of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) electronics in space systems. While COTS parts offer maximum performance, their use results in unavoidable increases in risk. This work presents a noninvasive technique for the measurement of cumulative and transient radiation effects in arbitrary circuits, termed ionizing radiation effects spectroscopy (IRES). IRES identifies radiation effects based on statistical time-frequency analyses of native waveform behavior, thus having a minimal impact on operating performance. The resulting measures are used to identify parametric shifts as well as transient anomalies. IRES, which exploits the subtle characteristics inherent in the waveforms, shows promise for in-situ health monitoring and radiation mitigation
An examination of the relationship between UT Extension Program Assistants\u27 use of communication technology in the workplace and their ability to successfully communicate with coworkers and the community
This study examined the relationship between the level of communication technology use in the workplace by University of Tennessee Extension program assistants and their interpersonal communication skills. There were seven quantitative research questions and one qualitative question. The main research question explored whether a significant difference existed in employees’ reported levels of communication skills in the workplace, as measured by the sociocommunicative orientation (SCO) scale, based on employees’ reported levels of communication technology use. Other questions explored whether there was a significant interaction between employees’ reported levels of communication technology use and their job positions on their levels of communication skills, a significant interaction between employees’ reported level of communication technology use and areas of foci on their levels of communication skills, a significant difference in employees’ assertiveness or responsiveness scores based on reported levels of communication technology use, and a significant difference in employees’ SCO scores based on their job position or areas of foci. Analysis of variance and chi-square tests were administered to determine relationships, if any. The qualitative question asked Extension administrators about their perceptions of differences or similarities in program assistants’ levels of communication skills relative to their associated job positions and areas of foci. Direct analysis was conducted on the telephone interview question to determine trends or common themes. Although analyses of data for the seven quantitative questions revealed no significant differences in level of communication skills based on level of communication technology use, common themes emerged relative to interpersonal communication skills for program assistants. Common themes that emerged specifically from analysis of the telephone interview transcripts give cause for recommendations for further study as relates to communication skills and communication skills development for program assistants
