Linking psychology curriculum with career skills: The student perspective
Students who obtain a bachelor’s degree in psychology gain a variety of knowledge and build an understanding of social constructs, behaviorism, empirical research designs, levels of statistical analysis, and a deeper understanding of problem-solving. However, psychology students who directly enter the workforce face dauntingly high unemployment rates despite having gained these skills . A possible explanation for psychology graduates’ chronic underemployment is that they do not understand how their learned skill sets translate into the workplace. The proposed study aims to address this gap by developing a survey to assess psychology students’ understanding of the knowledge and critical skill sets they gain in their degree program and their understanding of the practical, transferable implementations of these workplace skills. Researchers will identify relevant Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other characteristics (KSAOs), and undergraduate psychology students will be surveyed on whether or not they’ve learned or gained the selected KSAOs in psychology classes. This data will then be used to design a KSAO matrix that provides students a resource to identify KSAOs acquired throughout their psychology education. The outcomes of the proposed study will provide insight on what undergraduate psychology students know and understand about the application of what they have learned through their education. This knowledge can then be used to design interventions, courses, or training that will assist students in articulating what they have learned in their training to the job market and future careers
Appraisal-Tendency Framework and Gender: A Moderator in the Emotions and Judgement Process
The study aims to clarify and understand the role that gender has on perceptions of justice through placement of blame and emotion. The Appraisal Tendency Framework explains how emotion impacts judgements, and the fairness theory explores how blame placement affects perceptions of justice. This research explores the impact of gender on both models. This study will utilize a 2 (emotional induction) x 2 (gender of actor) design. In the emotional induction portion, participants will view clips from movies to induce either sadness or anger. Following the video clip, all participants will be asked to write about a time they either experienced sadness or anger for their respective conditions. All participants will then take the PANAS-X to evaluate the effectiveness of the emotion inductions. In the gender of actor portion of the study, participants will view a short clip of either a male or female professor signing student scholarship checks. It will be clear that one student is under rewarded and one student is over rewarded; although, it is unclear if this difference was intentional. Participants will then rate the degree of blame attributed to the professor and their perception of fairness of the events in the video. Understanding how gender impacts perceptions of justice may help organizations understand how to better ensure perceived justice in the workplace
Plato, the brain, and the soul: Further research into neural correlates for plato’s tripartite soul
This paper explores neuropsychological evidence for Plato’s philosophical theory of the tripartite soul as explained in Plato’s Republic. Plato contends that an express relationship of the three elements that make-up the soul (reason, appetitive, and spirit) interact to promote just behavior, and that just behavior is optimal for individual and societal well-being. Specifically, just behavior is considered to arise from reason’s oversight of the other two elements. Apparent in this theory is the proximity Plato’s analysis has with the current psychological understanding of cognitions that activate behaviors. Strack and Deutsch’s (2004) 2-system model of reflective and impulsive processing, with the addition of Wiers and Stacy’s (2006) supplementary moderators of emotion and motivation, display evidence that Plato’s theory has footing in psychological theory
Consequences of the Ambiguous Insult: A Review of Literature on Gender, Race, and LGBTQ-Based Microaggressions
For over thirty years, microaggressions have been studied for their weight on members of groups like ethnic and racial minorities, women and members of the LGBTQ community. Microaggressions are the routine, derogatory interactions like slights gestures, snubs or minor insults. Microaggressions yield physical and psychological distress to victims and communicate to marginalized groups the biases and prejudices against them harbored by majority group members. This taxonomy divides the experiences of microaggressions into the categories of gender, racial and LGBTQ-based sectors, as well as the subcategories that are relevant to the experiences of the members when faced with microaggressions
Application of the Fekete spectral element method in stress analysis of plates involving holes and complex geometries
In an effort to prove the effectiveness of a methodology that computes more efficiently than traditional FEM methods, this paper details a method that allows for the accurate and efficient solution of an elasticity problem using an hp-SEM code. The code can interchange basis functions to allow us to compare Lagrange with Fekete basis functions, which have the capability of high accuracy and efficiency. The code is applied to solve a traditional elasticity problem with an analytical solution to judge the accuracy on a course mesh. This gives us a method that provides greater accuracy than traditional FEM when comparing the same mesh, and higher efficiency compared to Lagrange bases comparing matrix condition numbers. This produces a flatter curve when varying p-order, which shows that higher orders than the 9th-order methods tested here are easily achievable with this technique. The flexibility of our code is shown by solving solutions with complex geometry and holes
Variable reluctance motor airgap geometry for maximizing force production: a data analysis approach using finite element generated characteristics
Recent widespread utilization of variable reluctance (VR) motors and growing computational capability motivate further research to improve VR motor modeling and control. The primary objective of this study is to identify airgap geometries that maximize force density and minimize force ripple for linear variable reluctance (LVR) motors with both magnetically coupled and uncoupled phases. Complementary objectives include expanding the scope for candidate geometries to include a finer variation of tooth width and non-rectangular tooth shapes and using a comprehensive data analysis framework based on a nonlinear model for LVR motors formed from finite element analysis (FEA) generated characteristics. The main contribution of this study is the identification of the LVR motor geometry that meets the specified objectives. Further to the existing literature, it establishes the non-monotonous nature of the effect of tooth width on force density and force-ripple; force-ripple reduction is a primary concern of most LVR drive design. The study specifies a narrower range of tooth widths for both high thrust and low force ripple applications. The study introduces tooth fillet parameters; specific values of these further increase LVR output thrust, and the data shows which range of tooth fillets maximize thrust. Three salient applications of this study are as follows. (i) The detailed FEA-based characterization of the large family of motors has highlighted the effect of airgap geometry and motor characteristics and the set of tooth geometry parameters that impact attributes such as force density. (ii) The data generated from characterization forms a nonlinear model of the motor that compares well with FEA-based results and is applicable as a predictive plant model in LVR drive design. (iii) The optimal commutation of the family of LVR motors confirms the effect of tooth geometry on attributes such as root mean square (RMS) force density. The findings regarding the uncoupled configuration of the motor apply to the rotary VR motor and have a more extensive application. The document has suggestions for further study regarding areas of additional refinement for the optimal LVR motor geometry, tools to aid future research, and improvement of the LVR motor\u27s nonlinear model
The associations between gender role stress, media usage, and metacognition in emerging adults
This research explores the relationship between electronic media consumption and gender role stress and whether these relationships are dependent upon metacognitive abilities. Student participants (n = 238) between the ages of 18 and 25 from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga were recruited and completed self-report measures of both frequency and types of media usage, gender role stress, and metacognitive abilities. Results demonstrated that though there was no direct relationship between amount of media consumed and gender role stress, an interaction effect occurred between metacognitive abilities and amount of media consumed. Results indicated that individuals with lower metacognitive abilities who consumed more media had higher gender role stress. Findings from this study can inform future research directions, as well as policy and practice
A contribution to the macrofungi of Cloudland Canyon State Park
I conducted a survey of the macroscopic fungi within Cloudland Canyon State Park, Dade County, GA that consisted of twenty-three forays from May through December of 2019, and one foray in March 2020. The results of my survey add baseline data to our knowledge of the mushrooms present within the park, allow for the future construction of an All Taxa Biodiversity Index, and allow comparisons to other surveys of fungal diversity in similar areas of the Cumberland Plateau: the Tennessee River Gorge Trust (Starrett 2005), and the Lula Lake Land Trust (De Guzman 2000). My survey resulted in an overall collection of 198 specimens of which 116 were identified. Of the 116 specimens identified, 55 genera and 70 species were recorded. Specimens collected for this survey will be accessioned in the UTC Museum of Natural History - Fungi, and images and metadata will be uploaded to MycoPortal. My research objective was to contribute to the knowledge of the macrofungi of the southern Cumberland Uplands. The aim of the present study was to add species to the lists of those macrofungi known to occur within the bounds of the large, nearly contiguous public and private conservation lands of The Tennessee River Gorge, the Lula Lake Land Trust, and Cloudland Canyon State Park. These three areas are similar geologically, geographically, floristically, and have a rich, shared cultural history. The Jaccard\u27s Index of Similarity was utilized in comparing the similarities of macrofungi within Cloudland Canyon State Park, the Tennessee River Gorge Trust, and Lula Lake Land Trust
Reconciling Flourishing Egoism with Common Morality
It is a common critique of moral theories focused on the agent that they are selfish and immoral. Selfish here typically carries a negative connotation. Morality is supposed to show how we ought to treat people outside of ourselves; and this is true to a degree. But so often it seems, at least to me, that the more “selfless” moral theories seem to forget that the agent is as deserving of the good as those that the agent interacts with are. Egoism, broadly, reverses this and places the agent at the forefront of ethical decision-making. Unfortunately, this has historically led to theories that are perceived as harmful, immoral, and sentimentally repugnant. These reactions to concepts such as hedonistic egoism, psychological egoism, etc are understandable, and I agree with them much of the time. Nonetheless, I maintain that there is a version of Egoism that gets past these personal objections and triumphs as a positive ethical theory
Phospholipid remodeling via exogenous polyunsaturated fatty acid uptake modulates stress resistance in Vibrio cholerae
Antibiotic-resistant pathogens represent an escalating threat to public health worldwide, substantially increasing the burden of healthcare and community-acquired infections. Several factors contribute to the emergence and spread of this threat, including but not limited to improper antibiotic use and prescriptions in health-care settings and the community, increasing global travel and migration from countries that have higher levels of antibiotic-resistant pathogens, and a lack of new antibiotics under development. According to the World Health Organization, rising rates of resistance among Gram-negative bacteria (such as Vibrio cholerae) are of particular concern. These bacteria have evolved a number of endogenous membrane remodeling strategies to sense and adapt to their environment. However, another membrane remodeling strategy employed by these bacteria, the uptake and assimilation of exogenous long- chain fatty acids, remains largely unexplored. Here, we seek to address this knowledge gap by determining the extent to which phospholipid remodeling through uptake of exogenous PUFAs impacts antimicrobial resistance in V. cholerae. As expected, resistance to polymyxin B is substantially lower for mutants lacking the ability to modify LPS compared to the wild-type (El Tor) strain. More interestingly, PMB resistance varies when cells are grown in the presence of long-chain fatty acids. This difference is most noticeable for long-chain fatty acids abundant in the human intestines
