Boundary, costs and trade-offs in reserve design systems

    Get PDF
Due to limitations in funding and natural resources, it is infeasible to construct perfect reserve systems for large populations of critical species. For this project, our objective is to formulate a reserve design model that minimizes the distance between reserve sites meeting a threshold of biodiversity features subject to a species coverage constraints. Coupled with other spatial characteristics including reserve size and configuration, the boundary of a reserve system is of key importance. While positive area effects are gained when selecting additional sites, negative boundary length effects are also experienced. For example, it is costly to implement and maintain boundary sites, especially those fragmented from a main cluster of sites. Further, due to the difficulties in maintaining more site boundaries, species populations are now prone to negative boundary effects such as inability to remain in the site reserve and increased predator presence. However, it is frequently the case that the reserve boundary is expanded by introducing a boundary site containing an endangered species. Thus, we must consider the trade-offs that accompany selecting a new boundary reserve site and its cost. In this project, we perform numerical analysis on hypothetical test problems to study the efficient selection of boundary sites

Video analytics on the MLK Smart Corridor testbed

With the predicted boom of urban environment populations in the next 30 years, many new challenges in urban transportation will surface. In an effort to mitigate these, the Center for Urban Informatics and Progress (CUIP) has been introduced along with its testbed. One opportunity this testbed provides is the ability to utilize computer vision and video analytics to anonymously gather data on how citizens traverse the city. This thesis shall discuss an approach to real-time object tracking that serves as a basis for further analytics such as traffic flow data collection and near-miss detection. The proposed video analytics platform will aid citizens with their day-to-day commute through the corridor by deriving real-time data based on actual behavior seen in the citizens\u27 commute. Furthermore, since the testbed is ever-expanding in both hardware and size the algorithms and software proposed in this thesis are designed to prioritize scalability

Perceptions of injustice among intercollegiate athletes: effects of response type on individual well-being and perceived team cohesion

    Get PDF
When individuals perceive the relationship between what they put into an exchange relationship to be unequal to the outcomes they receive, they are said to be in a state of inequity. This perceived lack of fairness is often referred to as injustice and can have negative effects on the individual and team. Currently, there have been few theory-based approaches to exploring perceptions of injustice within an athletic context. In the present study, online surveys were completed by 78 student-athletes at regional universities to identify the specific types of injustice they perceived, the behavioral and cognitive responses to those perceptions, and the individual and team-related outcomes. Correlational and multiple regression analyses discovered that athletes experienced all forms of injustice, especially procedural, and were most likely to respond to those perceptions cognitively. When athletes did choose to respond behaviorally, this sample demonstrated negative effects to individual psychological health and social team cohesion

Predictors of sleep quality: Depression, anxiety, and sleep self-efficacy

    Get PDF
The objective of the current study was to examine the relationship between depression, anxiety, sleep self-efficacy, and sleep quality among college students by using both objective measures and self-reported data. Participants included 27 undergraduate students from a small liberal arts college who wore ActiGraph wristbands for a period of seven nights. Participants also completed anxiety, depression, sleep self-efficacy, and subjective sleep quality scales. Results indicated that higher sleep self-efficacy scores were associated with lower anxiety and depression scores. Higher subjective sleep quality was associated with higher sleep self-efficacy scores and lower depression and anxiety scores. This study supports the need for emphasis on the importance of improving subjective sleep quality which in turn may influence mental health issues

Preliminary Data on the Relation between Acculturation, Weight, and Sleep in Recently Immigrated Adolescents from Central America

    Get PDF
Data on Hispanic immigrants links increased acculturation with behavioral health concerns, though most data focuses on adults and Mexican-Americans. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that acculturation and acculturative stress act as predictors of increased body mass index (BMI) and decreased sleep in a sample of 62 recently immigrated Central American adolescents. Findings indicated a significant link between increased language acculturation and decreased sleep in bivariate analyses, but failed to confirm relations using multivariate methods or document relations to weight. Preliminary conclusions suggest that concerns regarding obesity documented in other immigrant groups may not be relevant among adolescents from Central America but decreased sleep duration may be related to acculturation in this group

A Review of Teen and Adolescent Attitudes Regarding E-cigarettes and Their Relevance to Education

    Get PDF
Over the last ten years, while teenage use of cigarettes has diminished, their use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (e-cigarettes) has increased. Adolescent e-cigarette use includes risks and challenges which are unique and different from adolescent use of traditional cigarettes. Many of the risks of e-cigarettes are not well known or well understood, especially by the teen population. A robust understanding of what entices adolescents and teens to use e-cigarettes is critical for schools in crafting an effective response. This paper reviews the literature on teen and adolescent perspectives on e-cigarettes and provides suggestions for using this information to guide school response in the form of educational programs around e-cigarettes in the United States

Synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of a heterobimetallic organometallic complex with a trans bidentate ligand for catalytic carbon-hydrogen bond activation

    No full text
I am interested in exploiting cis-alkynyl transition metals to form trans-bidentate ligands in order to explore C—H activation. The synthesis and characterization of (p-cym)Ru(PMe3)(C2-2-py)2 is compared to previous literature

Alcohol expectancies in social situations, social phobia, and alcohol related problems

The current literature based on alcohol related problems, social phobia, and social alcohol expectancy outcomes is not consistent. This relationship was tested and results indicated a positive relationship between all three variables
