    Using Geospatial Analysis to Model For The Cryptic Salamander (Hemidactylium scutatum) in Tennessee

    The Southeastern United States retains some of the highest salamander diversity on Earth, with a high degree of endemism. However, this region has also experienced consistent declines across recent decades. The seasonality and complex life-history of salamander populations leads to data gaps and detection difficulties. As a consequence, researchers have begun using citizen-science and museum data as a means of projecting current distributions. Habitat specialists like, Hemidactylium scutatum (Four-toed Salamander), have experienced habitat loss and subsequent populations declines. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has listed it as a species of “Greatest Conservation Need”. To mitigate data gaps, geospatial models are generated using various existing data sources. Landscape metrics that are used to populate the model include land cover type, elevation, slope, soil type, and hydrology. Using geospatial tools, we will be better able to elucidate the current habitat suitability for this cryptic species and these results will be useful to resource managers who require tested models using occupancy and habitat data. Models created in ArcGIS will be cross-validated using data collected in the field from predicted occupancy. The anticipated sampling for this project will begin in March 2020 and this poster presents preliminary models to be field tested

    Chattanooga Sustainable Food Center: An Overview

    According to Centers of Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC; 2018), heart diseases and cancers are the leading cause of death in Tennessee (TN). There are more than 16,000 cases of death due to heart diseases and more than 1,900 new cases of diabetes every year in TN. The latest data shows that 36% of adults are overweight and 31% have obesity in TN. Additionally, more than 45% of adults reported consuming fruits less than one time daily, and 24% reported consuming vegetables less than one time daily in TN. Research have showed that healthy food choices such as increase fruits and vegetables intakes have a protective role in chronic disease and obesity prevention. Several U.S. communities lack environmental factors that could support healthy food chooses and eating practices (CDC, 2018; USDA, 2017). This report explores a local organization in Chattanooga, TN (Chattanooga Sustainable Food Center; CSFC) that works to improve agriculture environment and food system in the community. The center collaborates with local farmers, producers, and community members to increase access to locally grown foods, provide nutrition education, and inspire engagement in regional agriculture

    Racial Disparities in Homeownership in Tennessee Cities

    This research comparatively examines the differential value of homes between African American homeowners and white American homeowners. The racial composition of geographical space within the housing market impacts the most significant form of wealth accumulation for most Americans. Because the correlation between wealth and racial inequality remains significantly high in the United States, continued scholarship on this topic is warranted to examine patterns and determine if housing inequality has undergone a positive or negative change over time. By concentrating on the time period from 1980 to 2010, this research rejuvenates a historical perspective of racialized practices impacting property values differentially. More specifically, this research examines housing prices in the state of Tennessee’s four major cities (Chattanooga, Knoxville, Memphis, and Nashville) using decennial census data to quantify the house values over time in the selected cities. The major findings indicate ongoing and substantial negative change regarding home value outcomes for both African Americans and white American homeowners. The results inform policy recommendations for housing developers, insurance, banking, property assessment professionals, zoning board commissioners, and other economic and political actors who shape policies relevant to wealth and racial inequality in America

    Quality assessment of work recovery activities: guidance for recovering from work-related demands

    This study tested a revised work recovery process model and provides guidance for work recovery activities based on their recovery quality value. A diverse sample of 540 MTurk workers served as the participants for this in-depth, mixed method approach to evaluating workers’ recovery activities (preferred and actual) as well as recovery needs. Using a modified model of the stress-recovery process, recovery quality was measured in terms of psychological detachment, mastery, and control, with relaxation serving as an outcome state associated with the proposed three core recovery mechanisms. A variety of analyses were used to support the idea that active recovery in peaceful, natural environments are more recovery-enhancing and to support the revised model. Results show how resources can effectively be replenished even when work-related demands are high (leading to better well-being and need for recovery outcomes). A comprehensive table of specific activities is provided as actionable guidance for optimal recovery

    Awakening from androcentrism: calls for measurement of gender and sexuality in criminology

    In recent years, calls have been made to progress the inclusivity of criminology, a field historically dominated by males. While specialty journals, such as Feminist Criminology, permit and encourage inclusive and progressive conceptualizations of social constructs such as gender and sexuality, these recent calls have noted mainstream criminology’s historical reluctance to such progress. The current study examined articles published in the past five years in a mainstream criminological journal and a well-respected victimization journal to examine inclusion and conceptualization of gender and sexuality. Gender and sexuality were included more in the diversity-focused victimization journal that was analyzed, compared to the mainstream criminological journal analyzed. However, conceptualizations of these constructs in both journals rarely fell outside of a binary measure, which suggests that the measurement and inclusion of gender and sexuality are still lacking, and within the field of criminology and victimology calls for inclusivity have not been fully heeded

    Using digitized herbarium specimens to predict potential distributions of Tennessee\u27s historical angiosperm species

    Species distribution models (SDMs) have become an essential tool in focusing conservation efforts for species with incomplete distribution records. SDMs enable conservation managers to increase field survey efficiency by prioritizing areas to invest time and financial resources. This application is invaluable for historical species which remain suspended between extant and extirpated, having not been documented in many years, but lack sufficient evidence to be determined extirpated. Identifying suitable habitat and previously unknown locations for species of conservation-concern has historically represented an overwhelming and often impractical task, however the development of model-based sampling approaches has made this task more feasible. Here, SDMs are trained using digitized herbarium specimens to identify suitable habitat and therefore, the potential distribution of 16 historical plant species in Tennessee. The ultimate goal of this work is to provide conservation managers with an effective tool for guiding sampling strategies, enabling the rediscovery of Tennessee’s lost plant species
