A mixed methods study of the relationship between dialogic inquiry and engagement in active learning Shakespeare education
This study evaluated the relationship between dialogic inquiry and student engagement within the context of active learning Shakespeare education. Active learning is a pedagogical framework that challenges students to experience Shakespeare’s literature by embodying the text through voice and movement. A mixed methods approach was designed to gather data from students in sixth to 12th grades, who attended a Shakespeare camp that used active learning. The experimental group had the addition of dialogic inquiry to their learning experience. Surveys, video recordings, and focus groups from both the control and experimental groups were conducted with students to investigate the dialogic inquiry approach and its relationship to engagement. The data revealed that both groups experienced significant increases in engagement, but the amount of change in behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement between the two groups was not significantly different. The qualitative elements of the surveys, video recordings, and focus groups helped explain elements of dialogic inquiry and active learning that students found meaningful and provided context for these findings
Spare the rod? The college student perception on corporal punishment
The current study explores college students\u27 perceptions of corporal punishment with a specific focus on how religious affiliation influences attitudes towards corporal punishment. The data is based on a convenience sample of 318 students attending a southern university. All subjects were administered the same IRB-approved survey instrument on-site. The survey included a wide variety of measures including items assessing participants’ religious affiliation, attitudes toward corporal punishment, and demographics. Multivariate logistic regression models were estimated to test the relationship between the independent variables and each dependent variable. The odds of males, non-Whites, Republicans, Protestants, and those previously corporally punished and raised outside the United States believing corporal punishment is acceptable for children under 2, 2-12, and/or 13-17, intending to use corporal punishment, and/or believing corporal punishment is emotionally harmful are greater than the odds of their counterparts
Predictive modeling of iPhone 7 charge rates using least squares curve fitting
In a time where individuals depend on their cell phones, the need for a long lasting and quick charging battery life is imperative. As information regarding how long a battery can remained charged is highly advertised, there is no information regarding how long it would take for a dead phone battery to completely charge. This study determined the amount of time it will take an iPhone 7 to charge from 0% to 100% using the standard charging cable under four different charging conditions. The charge percentage was recorded every two minutes until it was fully charged with this process being repeated ten times for each of the four charging circumstances. The average of each two-minute interval was calculated and used as the representative set of data for that charging circumstance. The collected data was analyzed in Excel and MATLAB using least squares curve fitting and used to construct a mathematical function that represents the charge rate. The information revealed that choosing one charging method did not result in a drastically different ending charge time from charging the same phone in another way. Mathematically, the data revealed that there were differing lines of best fit depending on the charging circumstance
Helios and Tenasi results for the workshop for integrated propeller prediction
Beginning in 2018, the AIAA began the workshop for integrated propeller prediction. This effort was intended to bolster the CFD prediction capabilities of the aerospace community due to a resurgent interest in propeller driven vehicles for electric applications. The test bed for this workshop is the NASA X-57, a model of which was experimentally tested in the Lockheed Martin Low Speed Wind Tunnel in January 2019. Using the 3D scanned geometry provided by the workshop a mesh was created and all priority one simulations were performed using two flow solvers. The flow solvers used were Helios, developed by the ADD office, and Tenasi developed at the UTC SimCenter. The flow solvers were compared as closely as possible with results relating directly to the metrics studied by the experimental tests. This includes the aerodynamic parameters of C_D, C_L, C_T. This also includes C_P plots at 6 span locations for all cases and lastly a wake survey yielding integrated torque and thrust values for the powered propeller case. The results show that while Tenasi functions well as an all-purpose solver, outperforming Helios in some areas, the best predictions of the propellers and their interactions come from the Helios flow solver
Overcoming barriers to the implementation of early warning systems to reduce the maternal mortality rate in the United States of America
The United States has the highest Maternal Mortality Rate in the developed world, and it has been increasing since 1987. To combat this problem, researchers have developed Early Warning Systems (EWS) to identify when a woman is developing signs of a life-threatening problem during the maternal period. The goal of this research is to identify if these early warning systems are being used in U.S. hospitals, and, if not, what the best way is to implement them. Several interviews were performed with hospitals across the U.S. and the transcripts were run through the analyzing software NVivo. Each transcript will be analyzed for common responses and frequently used words to determine the usage of EWS and the barriers to implementation
Envisioning success: an in depth look at the relationship between episodic future thinking and academic goal achievement
Episodic future thinking is defined as the ability to mentally project oneself self into the future and pre-experience an event. Prospective memory, on the other hand, is often defined as remembering to complete future intentions. Prospective memory includes two kinds of prospective memory tasks: event-based, or prospective memory prompted by some form of external cue or event, and time-based, or a task that an individual must remember to complete at a specific time. One area that synthesizes these two subjects is the realm of goal achievement, specifically academic goal achievement. In this study, I explored how episodic future thinking, when used as an encoding strategy, might affect both time and event-based naturalistic prospective memory tasks. In this naturalistic study, students generated a series of six academic goal-motivated tasks to be completed in the following three days. All academic goals were submitted over a Google form where students also answered whether they used internal or external reminders to remember their goals. Half of the participants underwent an episodic future thinking protocol when encoding their academic goals, which did not significantly increase prospective memory performance. There was a positive correlation between external cue use and academic goal achievement, implying there may be a benefit for using external reminders for remembering goals. In addition, results showed that students submitted their event-based goals at a higher rate when compared to their time-based goals
