Mathematical modeling of a variable mass rocket’s dynamics using the differential transform method

    Get PDF
In this paper, the mathematical modelling of a rocket with varying mass is investigated to construct a function that can describe the velocity and position of the rocket as a function of time. This research is geared more towards small scale rockets where the nonlinear drag term is of great interest to the underlying dynamics of the rocket. A simple force balance on the rocket using Newton’s second law of motion yields a Riccati differential equation for which the solution yields the velocity of the rocket at any given time. This solution can then be integrated with respect to time to get the position function. The Differential Transform Method (DTM) is applied to the Riccati differential equation while yields a polynomial series solution approximation. This solution is then compared to numerical solutions from existing commercial rocket flight simulators, and to experimental data from rocket flights. A parametric study is also performed to survey the effects of density, diameter of the rocket airframe, drag coefficient, mass flow rate, and thrust on the overall motion of the rocket. The comparisons of the DTM solution to existing data showed almost a perfect match and the parametric study provides an insight into the various effects of the variables listed above. The goal of this research is to aid rocket design teams, especially in university rocketry competitions, to use as an additional tool with the flight simulators. While the flight simulators yield outstanding results, it is difficult for the user to study the fundamental physics of the flight from the simulator alone, and therefore the DTM solution and its results can be enlightening and helpful

Why Do We Joke about Killing Ourselves? Suicide, Stigma, and Humor

    Get PDF
Humor serves a variety of functions, and the current study seeks to understand the function of suicide-related humor. Through the creation of a novel suicide-humor scale, we measured participants’ usage of suicidal humor and general humor, their experience with suicidality, and their stigma towards suicide. Our hypotheses that greater experience with suicidality will predict an increase in one’s use of suicide-related humor and self-defeating humor were supported. However, stigma did not mediate this relationship as expected. Findings suggest that people who have experience with suicide are more likely to use suicidal humor, but more work is needed to determine why

Linking Psychology Curriculum with Career Skills: The Faculty Perspective

    Get PDF
The popularity of the psychology degree among undergraduate students demonstrates the widespread appeal of a degree that incorporates an understanding of social constructs, behaviorism, individual motivations, empirical research designs, levels of statistical analysis, and a deeper understanding of problem-solving. Despite the various skills psychology students gain in their training, these students are chronically unemployed in the workforce. One possible reason for their unemployment may be that many psychology students and graduates struggle to identify transferable skills acquired from their core undergraduate psychology courses and relate to potential employers. The proposed study aims to address this gap by developing and administering a survey that assesses the critical skill sets that professors consider to be obtained in their courses. With the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (KSAOs) selected, identified using O*NETs methodology, undergraduate psychology professors will rate the extent to which identified KSAOs are obtained through the undergraduate psychology curriculum. Outcomes of the proposed study will enhance understanding of which job-related KSAOs are relevant to core psychology courses and transferable to the professional setting. This data will then be used to design a KSAO matrix that provides students a resource to identify KSAOs acquired during their psychology education, and consequently, understand the practical and transferable implementations of these sought-after workplace skills. Ultimately, this intervention will assist students in articulating what they have learned in their training to the job market and future careers

The role of organizational climate in creating a safe and healthy work environment

    Get PDF
A now large body of research has investigated the role of organizational climate in creating a safer and healthier workplace. In this presentation, I will introduce the general idea of organizational climate, differentiate climate from related concepts, and describe applications of organizational climate research specifically with regard to safety and health concerns. I then will provide several evidence-based recommendations from the organizational psychology literature about how to create an organizational climate that supports employees\u27 safety, health, and well-being

Identifying observation unit as best practice

    Get PDF
The rising demand for acute care is attributable to several factors, including poor access to unscheduled primary care and an aging population with complex chronic illnesses which place an increasing demand on crowded ED and hospitals in the United States (American College of Emergency Physicians, 2009). Observation (OBS) services are provided to patients with an acute clinical condition whose need for acute care hospitalization is unclear after their initial evaluation and management. Center for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) define hospital observation as those services that are reasonable and necessary to evaluate the outpatient\u27s condition whose need for the patient to be admitted to the hospital as an inpatient (CMS, 2011). The observation unit (OU) provides an intense, focused care management program configured for safety, quality and efficiency. Clinical oversight of the unit is co-management model provided by a Hospitalist and advanced practiced registered nurse. Evidence based practices such as multidisciplinary rounds, bedside shift report, and unit huddles are used to impact LOS, emit a reduction in cost, enhance patient throughput and therefore yield a decrease in patients leaving the emergency department prior to medical screening. Creating a dedicated area within a hospital to cohort observation patients is an essential best practice that enables safe and efficient care. As national and local trends continue to increase demand for observations services, clinicians increasingly understand the benefits of an OU. Observation units are dedicated units built to provide efficient protocol-based care to patients with well-defined diagnoses or presenting symptoms such as asthma, transient ischemic attack (TIA), and congestive heart failure (CHS). Only approximately one-third of US hospitals currently have an observation unit. The purpose of this research is to identify OU as the best practice (Emergency Medicine Clinics). The data will be looked at through the hospital X’s data platform Tableau. Throughout the research, any changes to make the OU as the ideal place to be will done through the patient throughput committee which oversees the changes. With an observation unit, how do multidisciplinary rounds, bedside shift reports, and unit huddles effect patient throughput. This research however has taken a twist as Covid-19 didn’t let the observation unit implemented at hospital X run at full capacity at any point in time unfortunately, but the results of the units and ED observation services will be looked at

Comparative plasticity of rare Pityopsis ruthii and its common congener P. graminifolia

    Get PDF
The natural world is dynamic, and species must successfully respond to the environmental changes they experience. Pityopsis ruthii (Ruth’s golden aster) is an imperiled endemic perennial confined to boulder crevices along short stretches of the Hiwassee and Ocoee Rivers in Polk County, TN. To investigate plasticity of this species within the context of such change, we used a comparative approach to observe general differences in plasticity between P. ruthii and its widespread congener P. graminifolia by assessing the responses of individuals to experimentally imposed environmental change. Overall, P. ruthii exhibited lower plasticity than P. graminifolia, but these differences were resource-dependent with P. ruthii having significantly greater plasticity within the context of water availability while P. graminifolia exhibited greater plasticity within the context of light availability and temperature. The plasticity differences of P. ruthii and its positive associations with productivity provide context for understanding its constrained distribution and habitat specificity
