Designing a social media site to connect ill students to their classmates: ClassmateConnect
Many children are out of school for an extended period of time due to a serious illness or condition such as cancer. During this time, they often feel isolated, especially from their friends and classmates. They also often fear returning to school, and the classmates often do not understand what has happened and why the child’s appearance may have changed, which could lead to bullying. While there are programs that exist to help this, one could not be found that simultaneously connected the student out of the classroom with his/her classmates and educating the classmates about what their friend is going through and keeping the child involved in the learning process. ClassmateConnect is a proposed solution to this problem. This paper discusses the need for such a program, the process behind designing ClassmateConnect, and its features
