    Microbial exposure and diversity in Norwegian shrimp processing plants

    Seafood processing workers have a high prevalence of respiratory symptoms and occupational asthma, primarily attributed to allergenic protein exposure. However, exposure to airborne microorganisms from raw materials can also contribute to allergic sensitization and other respiratory ailments. This study aimed to assess microbial exposure in shrimp processing plants and identify susceptible work tasks. Full-shift personal air samples were collected from two Norwegian shrimp processing plants across five distinct work processes: thawing, truck driving, cooking-peeling (technician), packing, and flour production. The samples were analyzed for the presence of endotoxin, Toll-Like Receptor (TLR) activation, bacterial and fungal DNA copies, and microbial composition. Endotoxin levels were generally low, with only one sample (98 EU/m3) exceeding the recommended occupational exposure limit (OEL). A significant TLR2 activation was observed among thawers, indicating the presence of microbial ligands capable of triggering an immune response. The median bacterial (75 × 103 DNA copies/m3) and fungal (3,301 × 103 DNA copies/m3) exposure were highest among the flour production workers, while the lowest bacterial and fungal exposure was among packers (1.5 × 103 DNA copies/m3) and technicians (337 DNA copies/m3), respectively. Several bacterial and fungal species were identified, including ten allergenic and sixteen pathogenic species. Sporobolomyces roseus and Saccharomyces cerevisiae were the two most frequently identified allergenic fungal species. Among the pathogenic bacterial species, Prevotella nigrescens and Roseomonas gilardii were the two most detected species. While the pathogenic species were identified mainly in the packing, truck driving, and flour production work processes, most of the allergenic species were found in all work processes. Altogether, work processes before the cooking of shrimp (thawing and truck driving) had higher endotoxin, bacterial load, and species richness than after cooking, suggesting that these work tasks are susceptible to bacterial exposure and that the cooking process significantly reduces bacterial exposure.     Algorithmic management and AI-based systems as a new form of work organisation Psychosocial factors and implications for Occupational Safety and Health

    This joint scientific report presents the Algorithmic Management and AI-based systems (ALMA-AI) project results. Launched within the Partnership for European Research in Occupational Safety and Health (PEROSH), the project focused on the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) implications of using complex digital technologies for worker management. The introductory chapter describes the comprehensive literature review methodology, but also the scientific and practical relevance of the topic, as well as the background and objective of the ALMA-AI project, a collaborative effort that involved 18 researchers from eight national OSH institutes, alongside four experts from EU institutions as project advisers. The subsequent chapter explains the project's theoretical approach, covering both the conceptualisation of 'Algorithmic Management' (ALMA) and the psychosocial factors approach used to understand this emerging trend in the world of work. To this end, several assumptions and definitions from well-known theoretical models on psychosocial risks (Demand-Control-Support, Effort-Reward-Imbalance, and especially Job Demands-Resources) have been explained to delve into OSH implications, particularly focusing on the negative consequences of stress or burnout, as well as its potential positive outcomes, such as engagement or well-being. Thereafter, the chapter on OSH implications and concerns presents previous relevant findings from cutting-edge institutions on the topic (EU-OSHA, JRC, ILO, OECD), highlighting the increasing prevalence of ALMA, but also outlining the main risks sources identified in the literature, such as those psychosocial by definition (intensification of work, restriction of worker autonomy or social isolation) as well as other related to the use of great amount of data (dehumanisation and datafication, technical malfunctions, or discrimination and privacy as fundamental rights issues). The final chapters are dedicated to presenting results, main conclusions and a discussion on new evidence from 2022 to 2024 (total of 39 selected scientific papers and reports) concerning OSH implications of ALMA. Specifically, it is emphasized that psychosocial pressures (excessive workload and time-lined efforts) are propelled by this new form of work organisation, as algorithms or AI are applied for worker management today, but also the constraints of workers' resources are underlined (control and decrease of social interactions).     Legislation and Current Practices Concerning Risk Assessment of Skin Sensitizers in the European Union. A Comparative and Survey Study

    Background: Despite legislation aimed to protect the population against skin sensitization in the European Union (EU), overone quarter of the general population is sensitised to at least one chemical.Objectives: To provide an overview and comparison of European legislation concerning skin sensitization. In addition, we gath-ered the opinions of experts and stakeholders regarding improvements in the legislation and risk assessment process in the EU,to provide suggestions for improvement.Methods: Legislation was identified and compared. Four questionnaires were created towards industry, competent authoritiesand regulators, researchers/clinicians, and non-governmental organisations. The questions concerned the legislation, the riskassessment process, data collection and potential improvements.Results: Seven areas of legislation were analysed. The legislation was found to be unharmonised, for example, differing modesof restriction and accepted tests for skin sensitization. Approximately 40% of the questionnaire respondents found that the EUlegislation and tools were not sufficiently protective. To improve the legislation 83% suggested harmonisation and 68% suggestedbetter data sharing. Other areas were: improved exposure data (78%), better understanding of the skin sensitization mechanism(67%) and non-animal tests (66%).Conclusions: Stakeholders had varying confidence towards the protection of European citizens against skin sensitization.Multiple areas for improvement regarding the legislations and the risk assessment process were identified.Legislation and Current Practices Concerning Risk Assessment of Skin Sensitizers in the European Union.     Narrative review of occupational exposures and noncommunicable diseases

    Objective Within the scope of the Exposome Project for Health and Occupational Research on applying the exposome concept to working life health, we aimed to provide a broad overview of the status of knowledge on occupational exposures and associated health effects across multiple noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) to help inform research priorities. Methods We conducted a narrative review of occupational risk factors that can be considered to have “consistent evidence for an association,” or where there is “limited/inadequate evidence for an association” for 6 NCD groups: nonmalignant respiratory diseases; neurodegenerative diseases; cardiovascular/metabolic diseases; mental disorders; musculoskeletal diseases; and cancer. The assessment was done in expert sessions, primarily based on systematic reviews, supplemented with narrative reviews, reports, and original studies. Subsequently, knowledge gaps were identified, e.g. based on missing information on exposure–response relationships, gender differences, critical time-windows, interactions, and inadequate study quality. Results We identified over 200 occupational exposures with consistent or limited/inadequate evidence for associations with one or more of 60+ NCDs. Various exposures were identified as possible risk factors for multiple outcomes. Examples are diesel engine exhaust and cadmium, with consistent evidence for lung cancer, but limited/inadequate evidence for other cancer sites, respiratory, neurodegenerative, and cardiovascular diseases. Other examples are physically heavy work, shift work, and decision latitude/job control. For associations with limited/inadequate evidence, new studies are needed to confirm the association. For risk factors with consistent evidence, improvements in study design, exposure assessment, and case definition could lead to a better understanding of the association and help inform health-based threshold levels. Conclusions By providing an overview of knowledge gaps in the associations between occupational exposures and their health effects, our narrative review will help setting priorities in occupational health research. Future epidemiological studies should prioritize to include large sample sizes, assess exposures prior to disease onset, and quantify exposures. Potential sources of biases and confounding need to be identified and accounted for in both original studies and systematic reviews.publishedVersio

    Toward Standardization of a Lung New Approach Model for Toxicity Testing of Nanomaterials

    This study represents an attempt toward the standardization of pulmonary NAMs and the development of a novel approach for toxicity testing of nanomaterials. Laboratory comparisons are challenging yet essential for identifying existing limitations and proposing potential solutions. Lung cells cultivated and exposed at the air-liquid interface (ALI) more accurately represent the physiology of human lungs and pulmonary exposure scenarios than submerged cell and exposure models. A triculture cell model system was used, consisting of human A549 lung epithelial cells and differentiated THP-1 macrophages on the apical side, with EA.hy926 endothelial cells on the basolateral side. The cells were exposed to silver nanoparticles NM-300K for 24 h. The model used here showed to be applicable for assessing the hazards of nanomaterials and chemicals, albeit with some limitations. Cellular viability was measured using the alamarBlue assay, DNA damage was assessed with the enzyme-modified comet assay, and the expression of 40 genes related to cell viability, inflammation, and DNA damage response was evaluated through RT2 gene expression profiling.     Characterization of particle exposure during tunnel excavation by tunnel boring machines

    Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) are used to excavate tunnels in a manner where the rock is constantly penetrated with rotating cutter heads. Fine particles of the rock minerals are thereby generated. Workers on and in the vicinity of the TBM are exposed to particulate matter (PM) consisting of bedrock minerals including α-quartz. Exposure to respirable α-quartz remains a concern because of the respiratory diseases associated with this exposure. The particle size distribution of PM and α-quartz is of special importance because of its influence on adverse health effects, monitoring and control strategies as well as accurate quantification of α-quartz concentrations. The major aim of our study was therefore to investigate the particle size distribution of airborne PM and α-quartz generated during tunnel excavation using TBMs in an area dominated by gneiss, a metamorphic type of rock. Sioutas cascade impactors were used to collect personal samples on 3 separate days. The impactor fractionates the dust in 5 size fractions, from 10 µm down to below 0.25 µm. The filters were weighted, and the α-quartz concentrations were quantified using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and the NIOSH 7500 method on the 5 size fractions. Other minerals were determined using Rietveld refinement XRD analysis. The size and elemental composition of individual particles were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. The majority of PM mass was collected on the first 3 stages (aerodynamic diameter = 10 to 0.5 µm) of the Sioutas cascade impactor. No observable differences were found for the size distribution of the collected PM and α-quartz for the 3 sampling days nor the various work tasks. However, the α-quartz proportion varied for the 3 sampling days demonstrating a dependence on geology. The collected α-quartz consisted of more particles with sizes below 1 µm than the calibration material, which most likely affected the accuracy of the measured respirable α-quartz concentrations. This potential systematic error is important to keep in mind when analyzing α-quartz from occupational samples. Knowledge of the particle size distribution is also important for control measures, which should target particle sizes that efficiently capture the respirable α-quartz concentration.publishedVersio

    Leaders as the targets of workplace bullying - prevalence and outcomes

    Purpose Bullying of leaders is an underexplored topic in organizational research. To fill this knowledge gap, the aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of bullying of leaders and to examine whether holding a formal leadership position influences the relationships between exposure to bullying and the outcomes job satisfaction and depression. Methods Data from two separate surveys were employed: (1) A cross-sectional occupation specific sample comprising 678 Norwegian child welfare social workers; (2) A nationally representative probability sample of 1,608 Norwegian employees with two time-points (6 months’ time-lag). Results Analyzing multiple indicators of workplace bullying, holding a formal leadership position had no impact on the initial risk of being bullied. Analyses of prospective data showed that leaders report a somewhat stronger increase in levels of bullying over time compared to non-leaders, although the effect size was small. With exception of a small buffering effect on the cross-sectional association between exposure to bullying behaviors and job satisfaction in the second sample, holding a leadership position had no effect on the strength of the association between bullying and outcomes. Conclusion The findings show that leaders have the same risk of being bullied and are influenced by bullying in roughly the same manner as non-leaders. Organizational measures and interventions against bullying should therefore consider leaders as a risk group in line with other employees.publishedVersio

    Socio-economic status and head and neck cancer incidence in the Nordic countries

    Background The impact of societal factors on the occurrence of head and neck cancers (HNCs) remains understudied, especially in the Nordic countries. Methods To quantify the association between socio-economic status (SES) and the occurrence of HNCs, this cohort study uses data from the Nordic Occupational Cancer project that combine occupational and cancer registry data from 1961 to 2005 of 14.9 million individuals aged between 30 and 64 years. Occupational categories were combined into seven socio-economic categories. Standardized incidence ratio (SIR) analyses were conducted with the cancer incidence rates for the entire national study populations used as reference rates. Results Altogether, 83 997 HNCs—72% in men and 28% in women—were recorded. Among men, a gradient of risk associated with SES was observed for cancers of the tongue, other oral cavity subsites, pharynx, oropharynx and larynx in groups with lower SES. Managers showed decreased SIRs of 0.50 to –0.90 also for cancers of the lip, tongue, other oral cavity subsites, oropharynx, nasopharynx, nose and larynx. In contrast, excess risks of tongue, other oral cavity subsites, pharyngeal, oropharyngeal and laryngeal cancers were observed among clerical (SIRs 1.05–1.16), skilled workers (1.04–1.14), unskilled workers (1.16–1.26) and economically inactive men (1.38–1.87). Among women, no risk gradient similar to that in men was revealed. Conclusions The current study underscores the influence of SES on the incidence of HNCs and highlights the need for targeted interventions, including tobacco and alcohol control policies, and improved access to healthcare services, particularly for socio-economically disadvantaged populations.Socio-economic status and head and neck cancer incidence in the Nordic countriesacceptedVersionacceptedVersio

    Particulate matter constituents trigger the formation of extracellular amyloid β and Tau -containing plaques and neurite shortening in vitro

    Air pollution is an environmental factor associated with an increased risk of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, characterized by decreased cognitive abilities and memory. The limited models of sporadic Alzheimer’s disease fail to replicate all pathological hallmarks of the disease, making it challenging to uncover potential environmental causes. Environmentally driven models of Alzheimer’s disease are thus timely and necessary. We used live-cell confocal fluorescent imaging combined with high-resolution stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy to follow the response of retinoic acid-differentiated human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells to nanomaterial exposure. Here, we report that exposure of the cells to some particulate matter constituents reproduces a neurodegenerative phenotype, including extracellular amyloid beta-containing plaques and decreased neurite length. Consistent with the existing in vivo research, we observed detrimental effects, specifically a substantial reduction in neurite length and formation of amyloid beta plaques, after exposure to iron oxide and diesel exhaust particles. Conversely, after exposure to engineered cerium oxide nanoparticles, the lengths of neurites were maintained, and almost no extracellular amyloid beta plaques were formed. Although the exact mechanism behind this effect remains to be explained, the retinoic acid differentiated SH-SY5Y cell in vitro model could serve as an alternative, environmentally driven model of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease.publishedVersio

    Frequency of breaks, amount of muscular rest, and sustained muscle activity related to neck pain in a pooled dataset

    Neck pain remains a persistent challenge in modern society and is frequently encountered across a wide range of occupations, particularly those involving repetitive and monotonous tasks. It might be expected that patterns of trapezius muscle activity at work, characterized by few breaks and prolonged periods of sustained muscle activity, are linked to neck pain. However, previous cross-sectional studies have generally failed to establish a definitive association. While some longitudinal studies have suggested that extended periods of heightened muscle activity could be a risk factor for neck pain, these findings often relied on limited participant numbers or specific professional groups. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between trapezius muscle activity and neck pain by pooling data from seven Scandinavian research institutes encompassing a diverse range of occupational backgrounds. Methods Electromyographic (EMG) data for the upper trapezius muscle, collected during working hours, were coupled with questionnaire responses pertaining to neck pain, individual characteristics, and potential confounding variables for a total of 731 subjects. Additionally, longitudinal data from 258 subjects were available. The various EMG datasets were consolidated into a standardized format, and efforts were made to harmonize inquiries about neck pain. Regression analyses, adjusting for sex and height, were conducted to explore the associations between muscle activity variables and neck pain. An exposure index was devised to quantify the cumulative neck load experienced during working hours and to differentiate between various occupational categories. Results The cross-sectional data displayed a distinct pattern characterized by positive associations for brief periods of sustained muscle activity (SUMA) and negative associations for prolonged SUMA-periods and neck pain. The longitudinal data exhibited a contrasting trend, although it was not as pronounced as the cross-sectional findings. When employing the exposure index, notable differences in cumulative muscle load emerged among occupational groups, and positive associations with longitudinal neck pain were identified. Discussion The results suggest that individuals with neck pain experience higher cumulative workloads and extended periods of muscle activity over the long term. In the short term, they appear to compensate by taking frequent short breaks, resulting in a lower cumulative workload. Regardless of their occupation, it is crucial to distribute work breaks throughout the workday to ensure that the cumulative load remains manageable.publishedVersio
