Legal Frameworks for Public-Private Sustainability in the Indian Sports Industry: An Analysis of the 2024 Policy

    No full text
The Indian sports industry stands at a crucial juncture with the 2024 Sports Policy laying down a comprehensive vision for achieving the same. PPPs are seen as a core part of this vision as they are effective value-for-money mechanisms to improve otherwise costly sports infrastructure and promote holistic development in the field. However, in order for effective implementation, the presence of robust legal and regulatory frameworks is vital to facilitate the integration of PPPs with sustainability principles. However, the current absence of dedicated central legislation for PPPs has led to a fragmented regulatory landscape across states. This paper argues that bridging these legal and regulatory gaps is essential for unlocking the full potential of sports PPPs. To accomplish this, India can take inspiration from the global success stories which have already accomplished this. Thus, if implemented strategically, PPPs supported by robust legal frameworks can propel the Indian sports sector forward, bringing about economic development, social unity and global repute

Conflict, Gendered Borders, and Emotional Mobility: The Case of Kashmiri Women Seeking Legal Justice

How do Kashmiri women, seeking justice for the enforced disappearance and detention of their male relatives, navigate and negotiate with the gendered borders of ‘spaces of legality’? Drawing on ethnographic research and interviews with key stakeholders, this article uses spaces of legality, exemplified by courts, police stations, and judicial bodies, as its primary analytical sites to examine the multiple ways Kashmiri women traverse from ‘home’ into a masculine, public space. The theoretical framework argues that pre-existing patriarchal norms, in collusion with militarization and conflict-induced hypermasculinity, engender an intangible gendered border for women in Kashmir. In navigating this border, they engage in what we term ‘emotional mobility’, an infra-political agentic movement that results in renegotiating their roles, both at home and outside

“It’s the so-called feminism these days” — A qualitative study of public perceptions and attitudes toward women’s alcohol use

    No full text
Background: Alcohol use and alcohol use disorders (AUDs) have seen a steady growth in women. Yet, the issue remains largely unacknowledged by policymakers and society at large. This study sought to explore how Indian Generation X individuals from the lay public perceive and construct attitudes about women’s alcohol use disorders. Methods: A qualitative exploratory study utilizing in-depth interviews with 14 individuals (average age 53.14 ± 5.15 years, 6 women) was conducted. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: Overall, the attitude was negative and gendered toward both women’s recreational alcohol use and AUDs, accompanied by inadequate knowledge. Four core themes and nine sub-themes emerged: (i) women as moral gatekeepers, (ii) nature of alcohol use and alcohol use disorders (the lack of willpower narrative, disease perspective, and recreational use), (iii) consequences (general and reproductive health, motherhood, marital issues, and sexual violence), and (iv) negotiating acceptance (acceptance and reluctant tolerance). Conclusion: Alcohol use and disorders remain largely framed through a gendered morality lens, along with a lack of biomedical understanding of AUDs

The Gender Divide in Mental Health Indian Perspective

    No full text
Mental health issues result from the confluence of several biological and psychosocial factors resulting in mental health being gendered. While the National Mental Health Survey of India (NMHS) (2015–2016), found the overall prevalence of mental morbidity higher in males as compared to females, stress-related and mood-related disorders disproportionately affect women. More importantly, women bear the brunt since the consequences can be far worse for them due to reasons such as lack of resources, unmet health needs, and stigma. This chapter illustrates an epidemiological overview from India highlighting this difference. It then converged upon gender-specific mental health issues such as postpartum psychiatric issues and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder. In the next section, the chapter focused on various etiological factors that directly and indirectly render women more vulnerable to various mental health issues. This includes biological aspects (e.g., hormonal issues and reproductive cycle) as well as psychosocial factors (e.g., poverty, violation of basic rights, social status, sexual assault, domestic violence, and access to resources). Finally, the chapter illustrates the gender disparity in the backdrop of help-seeking and treatment protocols

    Internationalisation Zen

The Zen solution to analysis paralysis is to surrender the analysis and for once, fully inhabit the paralysis. The wisdom of Zen is as enduring as it is fleeting so I will not try to bend and twist it into an illuminating framework for the global higher education scenario of our time. But if I were to hazard a suggestion as to how we might walk the path of Zen right now, it would be this: frantic attempts to salvage the situation will not work because they stem from an attachment to the way we have been doing things. We are called to be still, bear witness, and practice not doing until our constructs slowly begin to thaw and completely dissolve eventually

Stigma, disfigurement and resilience among acid attack survivors: a qualitative body mapping study in Noida, India

Background Burn injuries are a significant global public health concern, particularly in low- and middle- income countries like India. Acid attack is a type of intentional chemical burn and a form of gender- based violence used to disfigure the victim. While the physical and psychological impacts of acid attacks are documented, research focusing on the stigma experienced by survivors in India is limited. This study aims to explore how acid attack survivors in India experience and negotiate stigma associated with disfigurement. Methods This qualitative research was conducted between November 2023 and April 2024 in Noida, India, in collaboration with the Chhanv Foundation—a community- based non- governmental organisation that works to support acid attack survivors. The study used body mapping, a participatory art- based methodology with eight women survivors of acid- attack violence. The body mapping exercise was conducted over four face- to- face sessions, ranging from 3 to 6 hours each. Two focus group discussions were also conducted. Thematic analysis was done in NVivo. Results Two meta- themes were identified as factors contributing to stigma and factors mitigating stigma. The first theme highlights the devaluation of bodies with disfigurement, unacceptance and abuse from family, and the resulting loss of educational and employment opportunities. The second theme of factors mitigating stigma documents participants’ journey towards self- acceptance and the critical role of the non- governmental organisation in providing opportunities and engaging them in advocacy. Conclusions This is the first study globally to use body mapping with acid attack survivors. The study findings recommend integrating holistic rehabilitation programmes that include psychosocial support, education and advocacy. It also illustrates the value of arts- based participatory research methods in capturing the lived experiences of survivors, ultimately contributing to their empowerment

Quantum-Complex Interplay with Axiological Value Systems of Ethics for Planetary Challenges

    No full text
We propose a comprehensive worldview based on the emerging literatures of quantum-like framework (QLF), and complex adaptive systems (CAS), with their significant contributions in social sciences. QLF and CAS are inspired by the quantum information theory and complexity science, but are not reductionist approaches, for example, we do not posit any underlying physical quantum mind-brain hypothesis, but treat individual and societal decision-making processes as better described by philosophical and mathematical principles of quantum information theory. We provide different examples to support our worldview and discuss the potential synergies between QLF and CAS, with their deeper implications for value systems, and systemic planetary challenges

Trade and Tariff Wars and Their Impact on Women in the Global South

This publication presents a feminist analysis of trade and tariff wars, arguing that rising protectionism and neoliberal trade regimes deepen economic inequalities and disproportionately harm women in the Global South. It critiques dominant global trade frameworks for prioritising corporate interests and economic growth over social protection, labour rights, and gender justice

The capital approach to sustainability and EKC hypothesis: evidence from India

The empirical evidence on the EKC hypothesis has been rather mixed, and the widely-used GDP per capita is deemed an inadequate indicator of well-being. Invoking the capital theory approach to sustainable development, namely of non-declining capital stock or wealth, we test the EKC hypothesis for carbon emissions in India for the period 1972 to 2013 through the change in comprehensive wealth (i.e. comprehensive investment) and its components of anthropogenic capital and natural capital. Employing the ARDL cointegration technique, we find N-shaped EKCs with comprehensive investment, and produced capital investment, indicating rising carbon emissions in India’s current growth path. Only the increase in renewable energy resources has helped reduce carbon emissions, while the changing economic structure and foreign direct investment have had adverse environmental impact. The systematic disinvestment in natural capital through the decades reflects declining carbon sequestration capacity, and points to the need for concerted efforts to preserve natural capital like forests for essential sequestration services
