    Variation in Orosensory Responsiveness to Alcoholic Beverages and Their Constituents—the Role of the Thermal Taste Phenotype

    Introduction: Orosensory perception strongly influences food and beverage liking and consumption. Differences between individuals in orosensation present an opportunity to conceptualize and commercialize products based on consumer “taste” responsiveness. The main objective of this study was to examine how the thermal taste phenotype associates with orosensory responsiveness to beer and cider, and more generally to examine differences in and relationships between responsiveness to alcohol-relevant stimuli and to beer/cider. Methods: Sixty participants (31 thermal tasters (TTs) and 29 thermal non-tasters (TnTs)) rated the intensity of aqueous solutions of beer- and cider-relevant tastants: iso-α-acid (bitterness), ethanol (irritation, bitterness, sweetness), dextrose (sweetness), and citric acid (sourness) at concentrations typically found in commercial products on generalized labeled magnitude scales (gLMS). Intensity ratings (gLMS) of multiple orosensations elicited by six beer and two cider samples differing in iso-α-acid and ethanol content were also collected. Results: TTs scored the bitterness of ethanol more intensely than did TnTs (p(t) < 0.05) and rated the bitterness, sourness, astringency, and overall taste intensity of sampled beers and ciders higher than TnT (p(F) < 0.05). Conclusions: Thermal taste status is an important determinant in the perception of beer and cider flavor. Implications: These results may assist product developers in designing beers and ciders targeted to specific consumer segments that differ in orosensory responsiveness, and inform broader understanding of the sources of variation in human perception of alcohol constituents and beverages

    Asian Elephant Futures: A Causal Layered Analysis with Gregory Bateson in Mind

    Human population growth and dwindling fragmented natural habitats for elephants in Asia are leading to increasing conflict between humans and wild elephants. Sohail Inayatullah’s Causal layered analysis (CLA) is applied to understand the human–elephant conflict (HEC) situation. Gregory Bateson’s “ecology of mind” (EoM; epistemology, recurrence, abduction, and metaphor) is also employed to focus on possible implications of metaphor, epistemology, and social–psychological misalignments. The article aims to inform multidisciplinary practitioners on the relevance of applying both CLA and EoM to social–ecological issues in the twenty-first century. CLA and EoM are compatible and complementary multilayered approaches which, as metaphorical approaches, share mixed entailments. Bateson’s “double bind” theory is applied within CLA to explore the implications of possible Asian elephant extinction within the Anthropocene in respect to Indian (Hindu and Buddhist) cosmologies

    Worry and anger from flight delay: Antecedents and consequences

    Tourists may experience the same negative event during their travel but evoke differ-ent emotions, some may express anger, and others undertake dangerous actions. Anunderstanding of the relationship between such negative events, the emotionselicited, and tourists' subsequent actions will help in managing these emotional situa-tions. This study adopts cognitive appraisal theory to examine the antecedents oftourists' negative emotions (worry and anger) evoked by a flight delay and theirrespective effects on tourists' behavioural intentions. Data were collected from 610tourists who experienced a flight delay during travel. The results demonstrate that, aspredicted by cognitive appraisal theory, the appraisal dimensions of goal incongru-ence, certainty, and other agency are the common determinants of worry and anger,whereas the appraisal of circumstance agency is negatively related with anger. Theresults also reveal that anger can lead to tourists' switching intentions, complainingbehaviours, and negative word-of-mouth, whereas worry only affects complainingbehaviours. This study extends our knowledge of appraisal dimensions that lead totourists' emotions of worry and anger. It also discusses the impacts of such emotionshave on tourists' behavioural intentions

    When less is more: The impact of macro and micro social media influencers’ disclosure

    There are growing discussions of social media influencers and their effectiveness in endorsing products. Further, recent policy regulations are requiring social media influencers to disclose sponsored content when using a form of native advertising. This research examined the effect of macro-influencers (high likes) and micro-influencers (low likes) and their disclosure of native advertising sponsorship on consumer evaluations of products. Results from a 2 x 2 experiment first show that consumers exposed to the micro-influencer condition report higher levels of product knowledge, and consumers exposed to the disclosure condition reported the products endorsed by social media influencers to be more attractive. The results also show that when exposed to micro-influencers who disclose, consumers have higher levels of purchase intentions than when exposed to macro-influencers who do not disclose, as well as higher purchase intentions than for posts where sponsorship is not disclosed by influencers. The important findings of this research for theory, practice and policy are discussed

    A Universal Seeding Strategy to Synthesis Single Atom Catalysts on 2D Materials for Electrocatalytic Applications

    Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are attracting significant attention due to their exceptional catalytic performance and stability. However, the controllable, scalable, and efficient synthesis of SACs remains a significant challenge. Herein, a new and versatile seeding approach is reported to synthesize SACs supported on different 2D materials such as graphene, boron nitride (BN), and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). This method is demonstrated on the synthesis of Ni, Co, Fe, Cu, Ag, Pd single atoms as well as binary atoms of Ni and Cu codoped on 2D support materials with the mass loading of single atoms in the range of 2.8-7.9 wt%. In particular, the applicability of the new seeding strategy in electrocatalysis is demonstrate on nickel SACs supported on graphene oxide (SANi-GO), exhibiting excellent catalytic performance for electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction with a turnover frequency of 325.9 h(-1) at a low overpotential of 0.63 V and high selectivity of 96.5% for CO production. The facile, controllable, and scalable nature of this approach in the synthesis of SACs is expected to open new research avenues for the practical applications of SACs

    Counselling intern self-awareness and readiness for practice: reports from a mindfulness challenge

    Mindfulness can support clients and can support trainee counsellors in dealing with internship anxiety. Since the personal development of a counsellor is core to therapy outcomes, the positive impact of mindfulness practice on therapeutic presence validates mindfulness programs within counsellor education. This qualitative study applied thematic analysis to written reports from 53 post-graduate counselling interns who participated in piloting an eight-week mindfulness challenge. Six major themes emerged: the variety of mindfulness activities, observations of self, insights about self and mindfulness, hindrances to practice, outcomes from participation, and advice for others. Intern reports indicated that mindfulness was not easy to learn, could be explored through a range of activities, and for most the practice contributed to growth in self-awareness

    A Review of Modern Radiation Therapy Dose Escalation in Locally Advanced Head and Neck Cancer

    The management of head and neck cancer is complex and often involves multimodality treatment. Certain groups of patients, such as those with inoperable or advanced disease, are at higher risk of treatment failure and may therefore benefit from radiation therapy dose escalation. This can be difficult to achieve without increasing toxicity. However, the combination of modern treatment techniques and increased research into the use of functional imaging modalities that assist with target delineation allows researchers to push this boundary further. This review aims to summarise modern dose escalation trials to identify the impact on disease outcomes and explore the growing role of functional imaging modalities. Studies experimenting with dose escalation above standard fractionated regimens as outlined in National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines using photon therapy were chosen for review. Seventeen papers were considered suitable for inclusion in the review. Eight studies investigated nasopharyngeal cancer, with the remainder treating a range of subsites. Six studies utilised functional imaging modalities for target delineation. Doses as high as 85.9 Gy in 2.6 Gy fractions (EQD2 90.2 Gy10) were reportedly delivered with the aid of functional imaging modalities. Dose escalation in nasopharyngeal cancer resulted in 3-year locoregional control rates of 86.6–100% and overall survival of 82–95.2%. For other mucosal primary tumour sites, 3-year locoregional control reached 68.2–85.9% and 48.4–54% for overall survival. There were no clear trends in acute or late toxicity across studies, regardless of dose or addition of chemotherapy. However, small cohort sizes and short follow-up times may have resulted in under-reporting. This review highlights the future possibilities of radiation therapy dose escalation in head and neck cancer and the potential for improved target delineation with careful patient selection and the assistance of functional imaging modalities
