    Effect of Broilers Fed Diets Containing Different Protein Sources at Starter Phase

    Performance of broilers chicken fed diets containing different protein sources were evaluated. One hundred and fifty (150) Ross 308 day-old chicks were shared into 3 experimental treatment groups, and each treatment group was replicated five times, with 10 chicks per replicate. Three treatment diets were prepared as follows: T1 contained GNC as the major protein source, T2 contained SBM as the major protein source, while T3 contained a combination of GNC and SBM as the two major protein sources. The results showed that feed intake was higher (P<0.05) for T2 and T3 compared to T1, even though body weight gain and water intake did not differ significantly between the treatments. The best FCR was obtained for T2 (P<0.05). It is concluded that feeding broilers diets containing either SBM or a combination of GNC & SBM enhanced performance compared to feeding GNC as the major source of protein

    Coprological, Abattoir Survey and Economic Significance of Bovine Fascioliasis at Sylhet Region of Bangladesh

    This study was conducted in the Sylhet division of Bangladesh with the aim of determining the prevalence of fascioliasis in cattle of different age groups, sex and in seasons as well as to assess risk factors and economic loss caused by this parasite. In this study, faeces and livers of male and female animals were collected randomly from different farms and slaughterhouse respectively during a period of one year (September 2016 to August 2017). Coprological examinations were performed by standard sedimentation technique and liver samples were examined by slicing the collected livers. A total of 613 faeces and 215 livers were examined of which 119 (19.41%) and 52(24.18%) were found to contain Fasciola gigantica respectively. Fasciola in feces and liver samples were observed significantly (P=0.002 and 0.018) higher in older animals of above 5 years estimating 25.64% and 36.36%, respectively. The lowest prevalence of feces samples was found in cattle of >3years of age (10.27%) and the animals aged between 3-5years (20.00%) in case of the liver sample. The prevalence was higher in females contributing 19.42% in feces and 26.66% liver samples. Among three seasons, the infection was found to be more during rainy season 23.66% and 33.03% in faeces and liver sample respectively. The present study indicates that fasciola infection in cattle associated with the age and sex of the animals; and seasons of the year. To control the disease in this area, appropriate preventive control strategies have to be designed to reduce the impact of the disease on livestock production in Bangladesh.  &nbsp

    An Over View of Equine Dermatophytosis

    Dermatophytosis is a fungal infection of the skin caused by dermatophytes fungi which have ability to invade the epidermis and keratinized structure derived from it such as hair or nails. T. equinum is the main cause of dermatophytosis in equine, all over the world. Clinical signs include mild to severe alopecia associated with erythema.  Horses less than 2 years old are more susceptible to infection. The disease can be diagnosed by clinical inspection and conventional methods like direct examination, fungal culture, skin biopsy and molecular diagnosis methods. This review will forecast more light of the different aspects of this disease

    Bovine Skeleton Preparation Using Hot Water Technique for Anatomical Studies

    Aims: The aim of this study was to prepare and document the processing of skeleton of a bovine species and to determine the time involved in the preparation. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Animal Health and Production, College of Agriculture and Animal Science Bakura, Zamfara State, Nigeria, between October 2018 and November 2018. Methodology: The skeleton of a Red Bororo bull was prepared and mounted using a hot water technique comprising skinning, evisceration and de-fleshing of carcass, carcass maceration, bone drying, frame construction, drilling and articulation of bones and bone varnishing. The time taken for each of the steps was determined using a digital stop watch. Results: The entire skeleton preparation process lasted for five (5) days and 11 hours. The steps and time recorded in the skeleton preparation of the bull were: Skinning, evisceration and de-fleshing of carcass (6 hours), carcass maceration (16 hours), bone drying (4 days), frame construction (30 minutes), bone drilling and articulation (12 hours) and varnishing (30 minutes) respectively. Conclusion: The method has shown to be faster (less than a week) than burying method, and safer, easier and cheaper compared to previous researches which requires the use of dangerous chemicals (chlorine bleach and fumes) and expensive items (skeleton preparator’s Standard Toolkit). It is concluded that drying was the principal time-consuming component in the skeleton preparation. It utilized 73% (4 days) out of the total time used in preparing the skeleton (5 days and 11 hours), while frame construction and varnishing had the lowest duration (30) minutes each

    Effects of Feeding Roasted Canarium schweinfurthii Seed Meal on Performance and Carcass Characteristics of Broiler Chicken

    Aims: The study was conducted to determine the performance and carcass characteristics of broiler chickens fed diet with roasted Canarium schweinfurthii (atili) seed meal. Materials and Methods: One hundred and twenty (120) two weeks old chicks were randomly allotted to four dietary treatments containing 0% (control) T1, 2.5% (T2), 5% (T3), and 7.5% (T4) of roasted Canarium seed meal (RCSM) respectively, in a completely randomized design. Thirty birds per treatment with three replicate of ten birds each for six weeks. The parameters measured were performance indices (initial and final weight, weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio {FCR} was calculated). The carcass parameter include live weight, bled weight, carcass weight, breast weight, thigh weight, drumstick weight, wings weight, neck weight, back weight, spleen weight, gizzard weight, liver weight, heart weight and lungs weight. The abdominal fat weight was removed, weighted and grossly examined for any pathological changes. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistic and ANOVA at α0.05. Results: There was a significant variation in final weight, weight gain and feed conversion ratio. There was no significant difference in the live weight, bled weight, carcass weight, breast weight, thigh weight, drumstick weight, wings weight, neck weight, back weight, spleen weight, gizzard weight, liver weight, heart weight, lungs weight and abdominal fat weight of the birds for all the treatments. Conclusion: It can be concluded that roasted Canarium schweifurthii (atili) seed meal inclusion in the diets of broiler chicken at 5% has no negative effect on the performance and carcass characteristics

    Consumers’ Awareness Regarding the Effect of Antibiotic Used in Animal Feed on Human Health

    The main objectives of the study were to determine the consumers’ awareness regarding the effect of antibiotics used in animal feed on human health and to explore relationship between the selected characteristics of the respondent consumers and their awareness. The study was conducted at Mohammad Nagar residential area under Batiaghata upazila of Khulna district and Nirala residential area of Khulna City Corporation, Khulna, Bangladesh following descriptive and diagnostic type of research design. Forty respondents from each of the residential areas were interviewed as the sample of the study and data were collected through personal interview method using an interview schedule by the researcher between January–February, 2019. Most (80%) of the respondents were highly aware while only one fifth (20%) of the respondents had medium awareness about the effect of antibiotics used in animal feed on human health. Consumers were highly aware that resistance is grown in pathogenic organisms causing diseases in human body against antibiotics that were used in patient treatment; thus, resulting in treatment failure. However, consumers were less aware about allergic reaction and painful rash, which are possible with many antibiotics. The mean awareness score of the consumers residing at Nirala was higher than that of Mohammad Nagar residential area but it did not differ significantly. This might be due to proximity of the two residential areas. Among ten selected characteristics of the respondents; education, family education, annual family income, exposure to communication media, nutritional knowledge, animal protein consumption behavior and attitude showed positive significant relationship with their awareness regarding the effect of antibiotic used in animal feed on human health.     Effect of Year of Calving on the Reproductive Performance of Holstein Friesian Cows in Vom Plateau State Nigeria

    The study was carried out to estimate the effect of year of calving on reproductive performance traits of Holstein Friesian cows that calved between 2006 – 2017. Five hundred and thirteen (513) calving records obtained from Integrated Dairy Farm Vom were collated for the study. Data was analyzed using the general linear models of SAS 2001 (version 8.0). Results revealed that the overall mean of Age at First Calving (AFC), Calving Internal (CI) and Days Open (DO) were 30.36±0.23 months, 379.70±13.34 days and 93.67± 9.74 days respectively.  All the reproductive traits in the study have significant effect (P<0.05) on year of birth of dam. The first, third, fourth and fifth calving interval has significant effect (P<0.05) on year of birth while the second and sixth calving interval had no significant influence (P>0.05) on year of birth. The observed reproductive performance of Holstein Friesian cattle under Vom condition was generally commendable. This may be attributed to improved management practices (such as high quality feed), maternal gene effect, accurate heat detection, timely insemination and adaptation of Holstein Friesian breed to the climatic condition of the study area (due to lower temperature)

    Analysis of Backyard Poultry Farming in Cuddalore District of Tamil Nadu, India: Implication for Sustainable Rural Development

    Aims: The study aims to search out the present status of backyard poultry farming (BYPF) and to identify the restrictions that poultry owners face and to determining the relationship between farmers’ socioeconomics status and their output. Study Design: The study was conducted in randomly selected fifteen villages of three divisions of Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu. Place and Duration of Study: Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu, India. Methodology: A structured interview was done with 240 respondents i.e. 80 each from the three Divisions. Results: The result revealed that participants were predominantly young, and had low level of education in backyard chicken production. Agricultural labour was the major occupation; they had marginal land and medium livestock holding with more than 6 years of poultry farming experience. Conclusion: The major constraints identified were high incidence of poultry diseases, lack of suitable germ plasm and attack by predators. Recommendation: Extension programmes should take place so that the poultry owners upgrade their knowledge and become more skillful using the new technologie. This way they can maximize the productivity and their income

    Effect of Lawsonia inermis Leaf Meal on Performance and Blood Profile of Broiler Chicken at Starter and Finisher Phase

    This study was conducted to determine the effect of Lawsonia inermis leaf meal on growth performance and blood profile of broiler chicks for fifty-six days. A total of 150 day old broiler chicks were used. They were divided into five treatment groups of three replicates each (T1, T2, T3, T4, and T5 fed 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 g/kg Lawsonia inermis leaf meal respectively). Each replicates contained 10 birds. The experimental design used for this study was complete randomized design. The responses of the broiler to the dietary treatments were measured by feed intake (g/bird), final weight (g/bird), feed conversion ratio (FCR), haematology parameters and serum biochemistry parameters. Result obtained from this experiment indicated that Lawsonia inermis leaf meal had significant (P<0.05) effect on blood profile and growth performance of the broiler chicken at both starter and finisher phase. At the starter phase, the Average weight, Daily weight gain and Final weight had their highest values from broiler birds on T4 fed (30 g/kg Lawsonia inermis  leaf meal) while their highest values were observed from broiler birds on T5 fed (40 g/kg Lawsonia inermis  leaf meal) at finisher phase. Meanwhile, the feed conversion ratio had its lowest value in T4 at starter phase and T5 at finisher phase. At both starter and finisher phase, Lawsonia inermis  leaf meal had Significant (P<0.05) effect on white blood cells (WBC), red blood cells (RBC), haemoglobin (Hb) and Pack cell volume (PCV)  which could indicate a boost in the body’s ability to fight of disease. Also, all the serum parameters were significantly affected by dietary treatment of Lawsonia inermis leaf meal at the starter phase while only total protein, albumin, globumin and AST were significantly affected at finisher phase. However, total cholesterol was observed to be reduced among broiler chicks on T4 and T5 (fed 30 g/kg and 40 g/kg of Lawsonia inermis leaf meal respectively) at starter phase. The study therefore concluded that, Lawsonia inermis leaf meal could be included to the diet of broiler chicks up to 40 g/kg without any deleterious effect
