When his parents died, he lived with his uncle in Okinawa until the age of sixteen, where he moved to Hawaii to live with his sister. Living in Hawaii was very different than his life in Okinawa -- he had to relearn the English language, but the living conditions were much better. He describes his experience attending the Hawaiian Mission Academy, where he was sent to the principal's office many times. He then transferred to Farrington High School
