    Get PDF

The share of world energy consumption for electricity generation by source is primarily based on coal and natural gas. Within the last years, governments have implemented policies to promote investment in renewable energy. In Ecuador, the share of hydroelectricity has rapidly increased without regarding long-term environmental impacts. This paper aims to develop a cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment of two representative plants of Ecuador (Agoyán and Paute, with 156 MW and 1075 MW of installed capacity, respectively). The life cycle inventory contains the primary flows of energy and matter during the construction, operation, and final disposal stages, with 1 kWh as a functional unit. The life cycle impact assessment uses the CML 2000 midpoint potential categories, including Abiotic Depletion, Acidification, Eutrophication, and Global Warming. The construction stage is the leading contributor to the global impacts, and the dam the environmental hot spot of both plants, and the reservoir flooding represents the major contributor to the impact during the operation stage. Furthermore, electricity generation in plants with a larger scale can lead to fewer impacts, suggesting that constructing large-scale plants can reduce the global impacts in countries with similar hydropower potential. This methodological framework serves as a decision-making criterion for evaluating the environmental performance of other renewable energy systems

    (193) Proposal to democratize aspects of the governance of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants

Prior to the 2011 Melbourne Congress, the late esteemednomenclaturalist Gillian Perry (in Taxon 59: 1915–1916. 2010) dis-covered a previously overlooked issue threatening the perceivedhomotypy of some 30 names with conserved types and their basio-nyms then listed in Appendices III and IV of theVienna Code(McNeill & al. in Regnum Veg. 146. 2006). At that time, it may havesimply been assumed that the basionym of a conserved name was au-tomatically homotypic with the conserved name. But for this toremain true when the conserved name was explicitly conserved witha conserved type, the basionym would have to be explicitly conservedsimilarly. Because 28 of the 30 cases Perry (l.c.) mentioned involvedbasionyms that applied to subdivisions of genera (App. III) or infra-specific taxa (App. IV), which lacked any provision for their conser-vation under theVienna Code, she submitted Proposal 243 to remedythis situation, which upon its approval in Melbourne gave rise to mostof the final sentence of current Art. 14.1 (“The name of a subdivisionof a genus or of an infraspecific taxon may be conserved with a con-served type and listed in App. III and IV, respectively, when it is thebasionymor replaced synonymof a name of a genus or species thatcould not continue to be used in its current sense without conserva-tion”; Turland & al. in Regnum Veg. 159. 2018). The bolded textwas added to this Article with acceptance of Proposal 234 (Wiersema& al. in Taxon 65: 642–646. 2016) at the Shenzhen Congress.Perry astutely recognized that while acceptance of her Proposal243 would provide a future mechanism for ensuring correspon-dence between listed types of names with conserved types in App.III and IV and those of their basionyms, when thesecould then beexplicitly conserved as such, it could not address the already exist-ing incongruency of types resulting from strict application of thenArt. 14, where the listed basionyms (at the same rank) had not been

Prediction of acute toxicity of pesticides for Americamysis bahia using linear and nonlinear QSTR modelling approaches

    Get PDF
Globally, pesticides are toxic substances with wide applications. However, the widespread use of pesticides has received increasing attention from regulatory agencies due to their various acute and chronic effects on multiple organisms. In this study, Quantitative Structure-Toxicity Relationship (QSTR) models were established using Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) and five Machine Learning (ML) algorithms to predict pesticide toxicity in Americamysis bahia. The most influential descriptors included in the MLR model are RBF, JGI2, nCbH, nRCOOR, nRSR, nPO4 and ‘Cl-090’, with positive contributions to the dependent variable (negative decimal logarithm of median lethal concentration at 96-h). The Random Forest (RF) regression model was superior amongst the five ML models. We observed higher values of R2 (0.812) and lower values of RMSE (0.595) and MAE (0.462) in the cross-validation training set and external validation set. Similarly, this study had a high level of fitness and was internally robust and externally predictive compared to models presented in similar studies. The results suggest that the developed QSTR models are suitable for reliably predicting the aquatic toxicity of structurally diverse pesticides and can be used for screening, prioritising new pesticides, filling data gaps and overcoming the limitations of in vivo and in vitro tests

Lakes provide water services for different activities, such as supplying drinking water to populations. Therefore, it is important to expand the information on reservoirs to understand their behavior and improve their management. The Salve Faccha reservoir (SFR) in the high Andes of Ecuador (3890 masl) since 1998 contributes 900 l/s to the water supply Quito, which makes it a reservoir of high study interest. We sought to identify the existence of stratification in the SFR by analyzing the temporal distribution of the physicochemical parameters of the historical data and of the multiparametric hydrobuoy. Determine seasons based on Walter-Lieth climates and wind behavior by wind roses. Using heat maps, plot previously processed high-frequency data and search for thermoclines based on water density and with monthly sample data, plot vertical isolines. The SFR presented slight seasonal thermal stratifications (at 2.75 and 7.50m depth) and chemical (between 5 and 10m depth) in the relatively dry season, influenced by the wind. Dissolved oxygen (DO) has a greater variation in the water column in the relatively dry season and without reaching anoxia. The wind influenced the slight hourly thermochemical stratification. Turbidity, chlorophyll-a, oxidation and reduction potential (ORP) and pH did not show significant changes or correlations with temperature and DO. I did not find a marked stratification in the SFR. However, I did find slight variations in the relatively dry season that suggest a stratification trend in the future. These results provide information on interactions with climate, and can support reservoir and water resource managemen

The mortiño (Vaccinium oribundum) is characterized by its high content of polyphenols and anthocyanins, as well as high antioxidant activity. This research analyzed the effect of drying (convection drying and lyophilization) together with the degree of ripeness (50% and 100%) on the fruit’s antioxidant properties. Additionally, a sensory evaluation of an infusion prepared with the dried product was conducted. The treatment consisting of lyophilization and 100% ripeness had the highest values for polyphenols and anthocyanins, 4733.50 mg of gallic acid/100 g DW and 778.70 mg of cyanidin 3-glucoside chloride / 100 g DW, respectively. The ascorbic acid content was highest in the treatment with lyophilization and 50% ripeness, with 69.50 mg / 100 g DW. The antioxidant activity for the treatments with 100% ripeness had similar results for convection drying and lyophilization, 87.28 and 88.62 mmol TE / kg DW, respectively. An infusion was made from the dried mortiño product and subjected to a sensory evaluation from a panel of tasters. The samples with 100% ripeness, regardless of the drying method, received a “Like very much” qualication for color, aroma, and taste attributes. Testing for antioxidant activity, it was found that between 2.5 to 3.5 % of the original antioxidant content is transferred to the infusion. The findings suggest that mortiño can be used in the preparation of an infusion with functional properties, creating an opportunity for the local communities of venturing into this crop for industrial purposes

    Get PDF
Tutora: Odette Fukushima, Er
