Student burnout: keeping up despite your mental health condition
Many people suffer from burnout, especially students studying in a public and state university. The students are exposed to a lot of difficulties and stress, and it takes a toll on their health, especially their mental health. This study identifies the relationships between the factors of student burnout, the effect it has on their mental and physical well-being, and the effect it has on their academic performance. This study also entails what coping mechanisms the students most commonly use, and which are effective for them. The researchers used a cross-sectional type of study. The participants were the Grade 11 students of the University of the Philippines Rural High School. The data collection was through online surveys and interviews, which were then analyzed using diagnostic analytics. There are limitations as only a small population of the entire student body was studied, but there are still a lot of significant factors that were found whilst conducting the research. Significant findings in this research include the amount of stress that the students have in relation to their academics, the significance of peers and relationships, coping mechanisms and coping strategies, and overworking due to overload of requirements. The results revealed how the students are alarmingly burnt out and stressed due to their academics, but also how resilient they are. The students also voiced out their own concerns and solutions to certain issues or factors that negatively affected their mental health. They noted how heavy and burdening their schoolworks and how hectic their schedules were
“Barbie, sabi ko na! : case study on the factors of whether or not to come out of queer young adult students in Laguna using a self disclosure framework
The concept of coming out refers to the disclosure process involving the concealable stigmatized identity of being queer or part of the LGBTQ+ community. Coinciding with identity development, coming out is not a stagnant process. It is dynamic and nonlinear. This study aimed to evaluate the factors and influences of coming out or not of queer young adult (ages 18-22) students of Laguna using the disclosure processes model (Chaudoir & Fisher, 2010). It focused on the fluidity of identity in terms of their SOGIE (sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression), the coming out process, and the influences of coming out. Chaudoir and Fisher’s disclosure processes model (DPM) divided this process into three main components, including 1) the goal formation phase, 2) the actual coming out/disclosure event, and 3) the outcomes of disclosure, as well as a feedback loop. Through semi-structured interviews, the identity development and coming out narratives of nine participants were documented to review their respective circumstances as well as to perform a thematic analysis of their collective experience. The results showed that the participants have gained a deeper understanding of their identity as something fluid and evolving. It cannot be encompassed easily or boxed. The coming out process coincided at the base level with the DPM (Chaudoir & Fisher, 2010). A holistic perspective of coming out was also established by the participants who note that it is “not required” but a significant queer experience nonetheless surrounded by influences that make the process even more dynamic and personal. The influences of coming out were also enumerated starting with internal introspections and factors, which were found to be based on need, emotions, and identity management. The other category of influences is the institutional factors such as family, school, media, religion, and government, which essentially foster both socialization and stigma that affects both identity and disclosure. All in all, the coming out process reflected the plight of queer people living in a heteronormative society that pushes them into “closets” that they somehow need to come out of
A case study on the interaction of selected school-aged adolescents on the popular Gacha Game Genshin impact
Genshin Impact, a gacha game released during the pandemic, reached immediate popularity from the moment of its release, and it has managed to trap adolescents in its marketing strategy, causing them to invest most of their time and money on it. The goal is to get behind the reasons why these adolescents play actively, identify the cause for some occurring behavioral patterns that may be related to numerous thematic factors that have affected an adolescent’s way of life. This study has gathered ten (10) adolescent players from UP Rural High School to expound and explore how the game has continued to impact
their daily lives. The sample population was divided into two subcategories, the free-to- play (F2P) players, and the spenders. Results showed that those participants who spend on
the game, also spend more time playing compared to those who are F2P players, which is a discrepancy from the original assumption that those who spend on the game have lesser gameplay time as they could easily progress in the game. Most of the participants considered the game as their “escape from reality,” something that they run to when they feel stressed. Though there was one special case wherein the participant mentioned how the game had caused them stress, having a challenging time adjusting to the face-to-face classes from the online set-up, making them quit the game altogether. In conclusion, adolescents should be more wary on how they consume Genshin Impact to avoid making risky lifestyle decisions regarding the game’s almost predatory gacha mechanic
Sustainable entrepreneurial intention of Gen Zs (core youth) in Bacoor, Cavite, Philippines amidst the Covid-19 pandemic
The study was conducted to identify the influence of gender and the other pre identified predisposing factors affecting the sustainable entrepreneurial intention of Gen Zs (Core Youth) in Bacoor, Cavite, Philippines, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, it sought to: 1) describe the sustainable entrepreneurial intention of the core youth of Bacoor, Cavite as affected by various predisposing factors amidst the COVID-19 pandemic; 2) explain how the COVID-19 pandemic changed the way the respondents perceive entrepreneurship; 3) analyze the relationship of gender and other predisposing factors to their intention toward sustainable entrepreneurship amidst the COVID-19 pandemic; and 4) determine the influence of gender and other predisposing factors on the sustainable entrepreneurial intention of the respondents the amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The research was conducted using a qualitative research method with a total of 142 respondents determined through purposive sampling. A self-administered survey questionnaire through Google forms was used as a research instrument. The data gathered were presented using descriptive statistics, Spearman’s correlation, Cramér’s V, and ordinal logistic regression analysis. Results showed that gender, green marketing factors, changing consumer behavior, and favorable market conditions have a weak positive correlation to sustainable entrepreneurial intention, which means that regardless of a small effect between variables, there is a positive relationship, and as one variable increases, the other variable also tends to increase. Thus, it was concluded that all four factors (gender, green marketing factors, changing consumer behavior, and favorable market conditions) influenced intention toward sustainable entrepreneurship
Factors Affecting Hours Spent on Work of the Informal Waste Recycling Sector in General Trias, Cavite
This study assessed the factors affecting the hours spent on work of the informal waste recycling sector in General Trias, Cavite. Specifically, this study determined the direction and estimated the effect of socio-demographic and job risk factors on the hours spent of the informal waste recycling sector on waste recycling activities as well as to provide a profile of the waste recycling pickers based on the said factors. The study utilized primary data obtained through printed survey questionnaires distributed to 180 waste recycling pickers in General Trias, Cavite. The use of Multiple Linear Regression allowed multiple variables to be tested in relation to determining the factors significantly affecting the hours spent on work of the informal waste recycling sector. The analysis revealed that individuals with larger household sizes and higher average daily income work for longer hours regardless of their sex, age, marital status, years of schooling, duration of employment , and perception of risk. Similar to past studies, Household Size and Average Daily Income positively affects the hours spent on work in the informal waste recycling sector, and this is true with the sample, as both are significant demographic factors. The pandemic-related factors related to the working status may have also played a crucial role in making other factors non-significant in the study. Nevertheless, as the findings of this study agrees that there are prevailing factors that influence the hours spent on work of the informal waste recycling sector in General Trias, Cavite, and as well as an increase in the number of waste pickers, it is suggested that the local government unit should create better programs to cater the livelihood needs, educational and health programs of the informal waste sector of the city
Analysis of the Relationship Between the Philippine Stock Exchange Index, Inflation Rate, USDPHP Exchange Rate, S&P 500, and Bitcoin Prices
This study attempts to analyze if a relationship exists between the Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi), the Philippine inflation rate, the USDPHP exchange rate, the S&P 500, and the prices of Bitcoin. The economic shock of the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on financial markets which caused investors and traders to participate in markets such as cryptocurrencies and stock markets because of fear from risk or uncertainty of its prices. Using the dummy variable approach, Augmented Dickey-fuller test, Engle-Granger cointegration test, error correction model, Akaike Information Criterion, Schwartz Information Criterion, and Granger causality test, the paper discusses the significance of the COVID-19 pandemic and analyzes the relationship between the PSEi, the inflation rate, the USDPHP exchange rate, the S&P 500, and Bitcoin prices.
The results showed that a significant structural break caused by the COVID-19 pandemic was present for all variables except for the inflation rate. All variables were observed to follow a random walk process and the financial markets were deemed to be weak-form market efficient. The S&P 500 was found to be the only variable that exhibits a long-run relationship with Bitcoin. The results also showed that there is a lag in the movement of prices back to their common trend and it would take about 4.51 months for the S&P 500 and Bitcoin to fully return to equilibrium. The S&P 500 and Bitcoin were found to be independent of one another despite their preliminary cointegrated relationship
TheEffect of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Filipino Seafarers: An Industry and Qualitative Analysis
This study aims to answer the following question: How has the pandemic uniquely affected the situation of seafarers and their industry? The study targets to answer and/or provide a clearer picture to this problem in the industry as it presents a unique situation for the deployment of seafarers. The study also aims to learn more about the different problems faced by seafarers for employment or re-deployment while also taking account of the effect on their remittances. The study also used the New Economics of Labor Migration as an explaining factor as to why seafarers choose to seek deployment despite the pandemic, hence highlighting their resiliency.
The COVID-19 pandemic has largely affected both seafarers and the seafaring maritime industry . However, despite the pandemic and the multiple repercussions caused by it, both parties (industry and workers) have resilience, implying that sea-based OFWs will continue to migrate despite the pandemic .. The pandemic is viewed. as yet. another constraint or risk that both seafarers and companies must consider and prepare for in order to keep the industry and their families alive. With the slow reopening of borders and eventual loosening of restrictions, the shock and response to the pandemic will bring back the industry to its feet. In terms of migration, even though there were significant health risks, seafarers continued to migrate to their work on a contractual basis during the pandemic because, according to the NELM theory, their families\u27 survival during the pandemic hinged on them getting on board and deployed for their contract to be deemed a success. With the obvious threat of the coronavirus, seafarers were more likely to be contracted as they and their families would survive any threat related to the pandemic, whether it was consumption or medical bills to combat the COVID-19 coronavirus
Analyzing Patterns of Household Expenditure on Recreation and Culture in the Philippines
Recreation and culture are becoming relevant in boosting economic growth and development. This highlights the observation of consumption preferences towards recreational and cultural goods. By utilizing data from the 2018 Family Income and Expenditures Survey (FIES), this study analyzes how much households spend on recreation and culture, and determines factors that may affect these expenditures.
A single-equation Working-Leser model was estimated through a Tobit analysis. Results indicate that total household expenditures, family size, urbanity, household head\u27s age, sex, marital status, educational level, and job status were significant factors in recreation and culture expenditures in the Philippines. Furthermore, an expenditure elasticity was derived at 1.59, indicating recreation and culture as luxuries.
Results from the Tobit analysis also show that higher recreational and cultural spending is consistently related to a higher educational level of the household head. Investments in learning and upskilling are therefore essential to drive more consumption of recreation and culture goods
Analysis of Generation Z\u27s Consumer Behavior towards Fast Fashion
This study attempts to analyze the consumer behavior of Generation Z towards fast fashion. The study analyzes the consumer behavior of Gen Z into three parts: the pre-purchase, purchase and post-purchase behavior. A total of 232 respondents were gathered through systematic random sampling approach from the College of Eonomics and Management of the University of the Philippines Los Baños. Using binary logit regression model, the factors that affect the purchase of the respondents of fast fashion clothing are the following: awareness of fast fashion brands, awareness of the environmental implications of fast fashion, awareness of the types of sustainable fashion, awareness of the environmental implications of sustainable fashion and monthly income. On the other hand, awareness of the definition of fast fashion and sustainable fashion, and price are found to be insignificant in the purchase of fast fashion clothing. The results show that 86.21% of the respondents purchase fast fashion clothing, while the other 13.79% do not and the most frequent method of disposal of fast fashion clothing is through donating to family and friends. The study highlights the importance of increasing consumer awareness among Gen Z on environmental implications of fast fashion and making a shift towards its alternative, sustainable fashion. From the results, it can be suggested for fashion brands to focus on efforts in prioritizing sustainability in the production process and promoting clothing exchange and donation initiatives to foster circular economy practices and reduce textile waste, contributing to a more sustainable industry
