A study on the students\u27 and teachers\u27 perception of the U-shaped seating arrangement in the University of the Philippines Rural High School, Bay, Laguna, Philippines

    No full text
Seating arrangements have been known to impact the work of both students and teachers in the classroom, however, their perception of the seating arrangement has yet to be studied. This study focuses on students’ and teachers’ perception of the U-shaped seating arrangement and aims to understand how the U-shape impacts the teaching and learning processes in a school that utilizes the seating arrangement. Through a convergent mixed-methods approach, the perception of students and teachers on the seating arrangement in UPRHS was measured through four factors derived from literature, namely: space utilization; student behavior and participation; interaction between the students and teachers; and overall preference of the respondents to the seating arrangement. Data were collected from 162 respondents and showed that the majority of the population regards the U-shape favorably when it comes to space utilization, mobility, helping the students stay attentive in class, collaboration, lectures, and group activities. Data also showed that the majority of the students disagreed that the U-shape encourages them to do boardwork or to be more competitive in class. The students are, on the other hand, divided in their responses to the U-shape encouraging them to recite in class. The majority of teachers consider the U-shape to be suitable for lectures and reporting activities, but not recommended when conducting examinations. The majority of the respondents rated the U-shape to be considerably high in their overall preference for it. Out of 14 statements regarding the students’ and teachers’ differences in perception of the U-shape, only 2 were shown to be statistically significant. As such, the students and teachers were found to have no difference in their perception of the U-shaped seating arrangement, and generally agree with findings from previous literature, albeit with a few exceptions; there is a significant difference between their perception of the use of the U-shape with group and collaborative activities and its impact on recitation activity of students. The U-shape was otherwise deemed appropriate for lectures and reporting activities. Overall, the respondents generally prefer the U-shaped seating arrangement, given its comfort factor, full use of the classroom space, and its ability to connect not only the students to each other but also the teachers to the students, and vice versa. The U-shaped seating arrangement is then recommended for medium-sized classrooms and for classes wherein student behavior and participation are particularly encouraged

Kasaysayan at propaganda: pagtutuwid sa mga maling pahayag ukol sa paglalatag at deklarasyon ng batas militar noong rehimeng Marcos

    Get PDF

The sustainability of native trees in the greening initiatives of the Philippines

    Get PDF
The nationwide tree planting of the Philippines through the National Greening Program (NGP) aims to conserve biodiversity with greater attention to the utilization of native species. As one of the major approaches to forest ecosystem restoration, the government including the academe and civil society organizations (CSOs) cooperate in promoting native trees as planting materials because they are naturally occurring species with a broader distribution range that are important in ecology, biodiversity, and economy. This review paper aims to 1) determine the parameters of sustainability of native tree species and the greening initiatives of the government, CSOs, and local communities; 2) analyze the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT); and 3) develop a framework for the greening initiative sustainability of native trees. Printed and electronic materials from 2012 to the present were reviewed and analyzed to highlight the status of native trees as reforestation species with the NGP implementation since 2011. From 2011-2016, the total commodities planted comprised more than 14% native trees and 35% native or exotic timber and fuelwood species. The SWOT analysis revealed that native trees are prioritized as planting materials in reforestation but due to poor silvicultural practices and species-site mismatch, low survival rates were observed, and threats of natural phenomena limit their growth and survival. Partnerships for technical assistance and funding are opportunities to plant more native species that is independent of seedling availability and volume of stocks

Behavior changes and LC50 if dried garlic (Allium sativum) acute toxicity in Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) juvenile

    No full text
Plant-based compounds are emerging substitutes for chemical treatments in aquaculture since they are known to cause less harm to both the environment and its organisms. Garlic (Allium sativum) is a popular herb that has a broad range of uses, especially in the control and treatment of bacterial and parasitic diseases. However, its toxicity to tilapia is not well-studied. Hence, this study was conducted to test the toxicity levels of garlic powder in juvenile Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) by determining the cumulative mortality and median lethal concentration (LC50). Test fish were exposed through immersion in 6 concentrations (150, 200, 250, 300, 350, and 400 mg L-1) of garlic powder with 25% allicin and a control in 96 h static bioassay. Within 24 h, test fish exposed to 250 mg L-1 garlic and above, exhibited abnormal behaviors such as lethargy, gasping for air, and weak responses to environmental stimuli. Cumulative mortality was highest at 100% in 400 mg L-1 garlic at 48 h. Mortalities were dependent on the concentration and duration of exposure. The 96 h LC50 of garlic powder to O. niloticus was 225.86 mg L-1 with lower and upper confidence limits of 210.37 and 242.50 mg L-1, respectively at 27°C

Natural and anthropogenic factors affecting the development of two highland agricultural soils of Bukidnon, Philippines

    No full text
This research was conducted in two highland areas of Bukidnon, Philippines: Miarayon, a sub-catchment of the upper Cagayan de Oro River; and Bendum, a sub-catchment of the upper Pulangui River. Due to their pyroclastic parent rock materials, soils in the upper Cagayan de Oro are classified as Andic Cambisol in open and convex positions, and Andic Umbrisol in concave and depressed positions. Soils in the upper Pulangui are classified as Pisoplinthic Acrisol, Ferralic Nitisol, and Acric Nitisol in areas with ultramafic rock parent materials, and Haplic Cambisol with pyroclastic deposits. Element contents in rocks were congruent to the total soil element content analysis results except for the total calcium which was higher in Miarayon. This is attributed to the parent rocks and soil management. Total magnesium and iron were highlighted in upper Pulangui soils because of their ultramafic rock parent materials. Soil management practices and length of cultivation were identified as anthropogenic factors affecting soil development. The constant application of organic fertilizers from chicken manure had caused the build-up of organic carbon and calcium in the topsoil of Miarayon soils. The differences in total organic carbon, total nitrogen, and potassium were highly significant, particularly in soil pH and total calcium between two sites in Miarayon. In Bendum, traces of phosphate fertilizers and lime application were evidenced by the relatively higher phosphorus and calcium content in topsoil. Tillage influenced the water conductivity in soils. Organic matter content increased the water-holding capacities of soil

The fall and rise of the Marcoses: from mosquito press to troll farms

    Get PDF
President Ferdinand Marcos, after declaring martial law in 1972, immediately issued arrest orders against journalists critical of his government and ordered the closure of newspapers, radio, and television networks. An alternative press from the media, student, religious, and workers’ sectors, however, was surreptitiously formed. President Marcos called them “mosquito press” because just like the mosquitos, they can be a major annoyance but not too deadly. The mosquito press fought tooth and nail against the curtailing of press freedom upon gaining composure from arrests, tortures, salvaging, and killings. They became the source of information from the ground. They resisted the misinformation that the crony publications whom Marcos’s friends, relatives, and those powers- that be churned out. A leeway, the political analysts call “democratic space,” was somehow seen in 1986 with the ouster of Marcos from power. This, however, would take a different turn at the onset of the internet, paving the way for some interest groups to disseminate wrong information through digital influencers and establish troll farms whose primary objective is to cleanse the dirty image of martial law and pave the way for the return of the Marcoses to power. This paid army of digital influencers, advertising agencies, and trolls became the tools for distorting history at the turn of the 21st century

    No full text
This study established the effect of education on the fertility behavior of households in San Mateo, Rizal. Furthermore, it determined the relationship between education and household fertility decisions and analyzed other socio-demographic factors that could affect the fertility decisions of households. This study used an ordinary least squares regression model adopted from the socio-economic study of Srivastava (1999). Pairwise correlation analysis was made to establish the link between education and other socio- economic variables to the number of children born in the household. Finally, a description of the respondents and population control programs in San Mateo, Rizal was made. The study found that, though it did not appear to be significant, there is a negative relationship between education and total number of children born in the household. The marrying age of the wife also has a negative relationship with respect to the number of children. The variable for the use of family planning and the current age of the women has also emerged as significant and was found to affect the number of children positively. It was revealed that the Super Health Center in San Mateo provides health care and family planning services for the residents of the municipality. Their population control services include: distribution of free or discounted contraceptive products and pre-natal and post-natal consultation services and medications, follow-ups, and house-to-house motivation on family planning

Gender Influences on Education-Job Mismatch: Its Varying Socioeconomic Outcomes on Filipino Online Freelancers

    No full text
In recent years, freelancing has witnessed a remarkable surge in popularity, revolutionizing the traditional employment landscape. Despite the fact that the importance of education changes depending on the labor market setting (Brown and Bills 2011), studies on educational mismatch have mostly overlooked the freelancing sector. Using data from 394 full-time Filipino freelancers, this research aims to shed light on the impact of horizontal education-job mismatch on online freelancers’ income, job satisfaction, and perceived career job mobility. Furthermore, the study investigates the influence of gender- related factors on education-job mismatch, taking into account societal expectations and the challenges of balancing family responsibilities with career aspirations. Using a recursive model, the indirect effect of several gender factors on the various socioeconomic outcomes was found to be impactful. Results show that sex, civil status, home-work conflict, and discrimination have a significantly positive effect on education- job mismatch. Meanwhile, the results also show a significantly negative relationship between education-job mismatch and income, job satisfaction, and perceived job mobility
